- The Evolution of the IK Multimedia UNO... Its grown knobs!! ... and buttons.. and is a lot better for it. It's the new Uno Synth Pro X. Here's my demo and review, but if you know the channel you'll know I'm a fan of this analog synth. Its predecessors never looked like they sounded - this not only looks the part, but sounds it too.
Any reservations anyone had about the UNO Synth Pro were not about the sound, just the interface. So this is a very welcome update.

Sounds great and love the interface. It would be cool to see them do an Uno Drum Pro as well now that they have improved their interface designs.
Oh man, this looks like a joy to play with! Congrats to IK for iterating on a cool instrument and getting it to a place that I think is going to appeal to a lot of people! I can see one of these sitting on my desk some time in the future.
It sounds absolutely mind blowing for such a small piece of hardware. There are really good competitors in this price range though.
Always thought that the Uno range was a bit like the Waldorf Pulse 2. A wolf in sheep's clothing...

I'm glad I've held off on buying one of these. Their synth line is evolving quite nicely and I quite fancy one of these - especially for playing live.

Thanks Starsky, great demo ! Their other devices didn’t really grab me ( I’m just not a monosynth person) but this really does sound good & Packs a lot of features into such a small package too- Twin filters too!😃Probably shallow of me but I’m really taken at just how it looks 😮. Hope it’s a big success for them.

Great review, as always. It sounds sweet and has a lot of great features, but I was expecting a 299 euro price point, not 499.
IK stuff always prices in high and drops like a stone.
What analog synth can you buy for 300?

I like IKM. The Modo Bass was one of my first third party plugin virtual instruments and it is my favorite VI to this day. I also like the iLoud MTMs - I think they provide enough quality for a professional mix or production that can also work in a homestudio or on the road. If I buy a synth one day, it'll probably be either a UNO Synth Pro X from IKM or a Cobalt 8M /COBALT5S, or the Behringer Pro 800. I know nothing about synths, but these are talking to me the most from what I've gathered in videos. Not too expensive, not taking too much space, looking decent and sounding great. I also remember a video by Venus Theory that really stuck with me (quite the knowledgable sound designer on RUclips) who made a video where he tried to guess which one of his synths was playing in a blind test. He put up really expensive ones with cheaper ones and he wasn't able to tell them apart, which tells me you don't need to spend a lot for quality of SOUND.
Well he was able to tell differences, obviously, but he was unable to say which one is which if that makes sense. If price correlated with sound quality, the results would have been different.
@@ghost_mall Yes, been complimented on my bass by real bass players. But I think if you have a good bass-player it's actually lazier to let him play it, than programming a performance in Midi.. depends on what you want to play I guess!
PS: Ampli-Tube 5 is awesome for getting all kinds of guitars sounds too.
I LOVE MODO bass... and the drums as well.. bass is phenomenal as an emulation, and the drums are so light on the system.

Great review. Shame they dropped the flanger/phaser from the previous Pro. Did you find you missed those effects on this box? And is this one of those "you'll only get so much out of it before you succumb to using the editor" jobbies a la Circuit?
I don;t miss the flanger/phaser, but then it's not something I use very often. I find editors are useful for seeing what's going on in a patch, but from an initial patch this is much more intuitive through the hardware.
What a great review, would expect nothing less. I have had a Roland Studio Electronics SE-02 since launch, which was almost 7 years ago, and never really clicked with it. Thus Uno Synth Pro X looks immediately more engaging, just from the look of it and the layout. You review really makes me want to sell the SE02 and get one of these. Have you ever compared the two? What are your thoughts on them in comparison?
thanks.. Ive never played the SE-02. I had their SE-1 when it was released, so had that Moog tone covered. I love the SE tone and their other products (I've got the ATC-X, SE-1X and MidiMini), but I've only got good things to say about the UNO-X as well!
Mmm, thanks. It does sound great and the tiny but perfectly formed interface is easy enough to use. It’s the extra capabilities SE added on top of the MiniMoog basics and then all the usual Roland guff that messes with my head. Also the CV in/outs on the Uno appeal as the synth’s job in my setup is to augment my modular. I only have brain space for one monosynth at a time! 😂
What oscilloscope do you use and how is it connected to the gear? I have the Korg NTS 2 how would that be connected?
I use a plugin from meldaproductions.

how do the buttons and knobs feel? its an interesting design. There doesn't seem like an easy way to understand whats going on with the mod matrix at any given time.
buttons and knobs feel sound. mod Matrixes are always difficult to track on hardware. The Waldorf M has the modulation routing at the destination points... so you have to go to the parameter to see how its being modulated. Weird, but no easier.
It be nice to compare it other analog synths around the same price and also against higher priced synths.
I think the unstable waves from the oscillators are bleed from the other two.

Is this machine really fully analog? It has such a great form factor, hard to believe that all the circuitry fits in such a small box. But then again, I´m used to discrete circuit boards in modular, which is a completely different beast (spacehog). As far as I can tell the sequencer is done right with great features, I´m really really tempted to get one.
All but the FX (obvs). Have you seen the Colossus I’m filmig it next to 😂😂now that’s a whopper.

@@StarskyCarr And the Colossus is more like two number 9s, a number 9 large , a number 6 with extra dip, a number 7, two number 45s, one with cheese, and a large soda. Also the price, wish I had a Lambo to sell 🤣.
For 499$ I’d much rather cop an SP404mk2. The new update introduced a looper, a sound generator (synth), Koala app integration, and a whole lot more.

I keep listening a weird noise sound with stereo spread in most of the shape forms
Occasisonally if I’m talking at the same time there may be artefacts from the noise reduction in the voice. If it’s in longer passages where I’m not talking I’ve no idea. … if stereo spread is on are you listening to sections with the FX? I’m wondering if it’s a RUclips thing. If it doesn’t do it on other videos there’s an issue with my setup on this. I’d be interested to find out.
I had bought the Uno Synth, then the Uno Synth Pro and will certainly not buy another Uno Synth. I feel like a beta tester. I was hoping IKM would do something new. A polyphonic synthesizer or a new drum machine. Not another Uno X, Y, Z.
Some of the presets are very "strike me, RUclips".

I think we all must have met them at Superbooth! I think they were impressed I ended up with both versions of the UNO pro 😂
The reviews get embargoed so they aren't allowed to release the review until the time the company says it's OK. At which point, they all race each other to attempt to get maximum RUclips views.
@@twatmunro I wouldn’t say anybody races… I don’t often get pre-release stuff but when I do I’m asked to release it at a certain time. I guess they want maximum coverage for the release.

Don't you want a poly synth with this voice design? If that was actually made, it would be one of the best analog polys on the market. What synths would match it? It would be surpassing Polybrute and going up against stuff like Moog One, at least in terms of basic analog synthesis features. Of course the poly synth is a niche product and will sell much less than a more mass market item like the Synth Pro X, so it may seem like a good business decision to just skip the Synth Pro 8 X and focus on the most profitable and easily distributable items. However, marketing items like the poly synth is important for the brand. If IK surprised everyone by being the company who just so happens to have the most powerful analog polysynth, it would have a positive effect on future sales.
This is a beast that is overlooked because of its price and the demographic that comes with it.

@@aquaticborealis4877 No update to Uno for the last 4 years. Editor/Plugin still has a bug in tuning the 2nd OSC even if it was reported multiple times by many users. Windows Plugin won't work (communicate with the synth) with most DAWs if an AMD with more than 8 cores is used (i had to pinpoint the peoblem because after months user support was unable to even understand it) and they simply didn't follow any action to correct it.
Also, customer support can't understand the differences in how midi is handled from Windows to MacOS (they connected with remote support to my computer and *I* had to tell them how to configure the daw). And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
True, but then again it's an instrument not an audio interface, if most bugs ironed out i'm not challenged by a new version... But all this versions does say something about the company.
6 hundreds for monosynth... ok parasomething in the field where you have big boys like Roland or Korg. This Uno basically push itself out of the market with the price, it costs more that fully analogue polyphonic Minilogue or even Roland Boutique series... I love IK but i see no point in their strategy. Maybe someone knows and can shed some light? Maybe there's something special about this?
Yeah I look at this and the Pro-800 and think: are you on the same planet? Nothing sufficiently distinct about the tone, although having a mini-MS20 with patches does slightly appeal it doesn't appeal to the tune of £519
