+Dominic Edmonds nah how would he know where the bench is if he was out of it he wasn't he saw the ref and he was pissed hand the ref got in his way so he gave him a shot
+blairrob if they were smart coach should have sent him to 'the quiet room' for a spell to follow the possible concussion protocol. Hard to claim he was woozy if he never left the game and played his next shift
+Miggy l I'm not sure actually... You see a Preds player coming along the way right when he collides with the ref. Maybe he had the intention to hit him, but then remembered he doesn't feel that well, so he moved away. The Ref had no real body tension, since he didn't expected it, what makes Wideman's attack more brutal than it was. Take a look at the skates. PS: I have to mention, I'm a Canucks fan and really don't like the Flames or Wideman.
+Jere Hoikka He definitely did it on purpose, the way he threw his hands out is obvious evidence. It's a matter of if he was still dazed and thought the ref was someone else or something.
+Alyx Vala I agree. He clearly looks like he is suffering the affects of a concussion there, after being pushed head first into the glass. This was some kind of lash out. I don't think he had full control of all his faculties. But that is no excuse. He should face serious suspension.
+Jere Hoikka I think he could have made more of an effort than that to avoid him. Truthfully passing someone/rounding them while ice skating isn't that hard. I think it was just a matter of him not thinking after being shaken up by the hit and bracing himself for contact which made it look a bit more vicious.
+We The North I don't agree with the argument that he was dazed and didn't know who he was hitting, because if so he would have immediately went to check on the guy and not waited. I think the better argument for an accident would be that he got hit pretty hard and felt there should have been a penalty. So in his dazed state, he was not thinking clearly about the repercussions of hitting a ref.
Pretty obvious it was on purpose, he slammed his stick down because he didn't get the call then in frustration hits the linesman from behind. Also notice how he never even looked behind him after the hit.
He slammed his stick calling for a line change, and if he were to look back or apologize at that time they would have been called for too many men on the ice
+Barrack Ebola actually it doesn't take a rocket scientist. know the sport and read the body language. that's all it is. as I've already said on this subject I ref minors but I'm still trained to identify this type of thing and there was absolute intent to hit. no question. and what else could be his motive except the hit in the corner?
To be fair he did look alittle out of it, he might of just seen the white on the shirt and thought it was a player from other team. He definitely looked rattled
Lmao I could mayyyyyybe see him still being dazed from the hit, and not seeing the ref until the last second. What is REALLY damning for Wideman is the fact that he shows zero reaction after laying the guy out on the ice. Just casually steps off the ice to go take a seat as if nothing just happened. There's no way you can not know you just obliterated an official.
I mean, if he had just been concussed 8 seconds before, his decision making might not be on point? lol but nahhh, he's definitely a veteran with no prior history checking a linesman for no reason.
IAmA Rose AMA Yeah, it's random. That's the only thing he has going for him, but still. Even with a concussion. A concussion makes you violently cross-check a linesman and then pretend it never happened right afterward? That's some concussion.
+IAmA Rose AMA Getting concussed is not an excuse... I've been concussed several times and while dizzy and nauseous, I never reacted like that bumping into someone. Heck, I've never seen anyone react like that while concussed. If he was that bad, he'd have been the one one fell over.
n=Not immediately after... those instances are so rare that you'd have a better chance of being struck by lightning. This wasn't a "violent accidental" act. This was blatantly obvious. Now I don't think he intended to hit the ref that hard, but you are (or should be) held responsible for any and all actions you take.
+Jere Hoikka I just watched this at .25 speed to be sure. It doesn't look like he's trying to strafe. It looks like he turned his feet to plant them and be stable for the hit. It was completely intentional. You don't raise your stike to the shoulders to avoid a hit. You ball up and try to be as small as possible. He deserves a suspension. In my opinion.
+Jere Hoikka Dis regard my previous commit. Just watched his post game interview. Why you raise your arms is beyond me. But it was unintentional. Now I think he turned his skates to try and stop, not strafe cuz he knew he couldn't, but at least try to slow himself down. For anyone asking why I don't just edit or remove my other comment. I stand by what I said from just watching the film, it was in error but meh we're all human.
+Mark Hardman From playing hockey since I was 3, no one plants their feet for a hit like this one. Cause he plants them then goes back to forward position. This is a player trying to slow down or avoid contact but is too late, I know those foot movements when I see them and do them. But he pushes with force is what is going to be looked at.
What are these commentators saying? It wasn't a collision, it was a hit. He did see the linesman. Now the question is, did he know what he was doing or was he so out of it he thought that was a Nashville player.
+Shaftell Man I can see it being more out of being pissed off at not getting a call from the previous dangerous hit on him, the refs this year have been garbage when it comes to not calling a bunch of shit.
+MLG_Mahal 20? I'd go rest of this season and next, and that's minimum if intent is proved. If there's any intent, this isn't even a Shanahan call. This has to go to Bettman for the safety of the officials.
+SlenderBender24 It's not even a question of if there will be a suspension...the question is: 10 or 20 games? A decision should be made after the All-Star game.
+SlenderBender24 .... he was rattled and out of it with his head down after taking a scary head shot. Skates into the ref at the last moment and threw his hands up.... Guy is half concussed, he's a class act hockey player with a totally clean record.
@@RandomPerson-gn7fu definitely wasn't a cross check that I agree with, still shoulda been something on Wideman. He clearly thrusts his arms forward, not in a way to brace himself for what's clearly an intentional hit on the ref, and uses the butt end of his stick and glove to hit the ref in the back of the head/neck area. Definitely not a crosscheck though that I agree with.
I've watched Calgary a lot this year, and I've noticed Wideman getting absolutely rocked on several nights. About 2 weeks ago he got smashed got up wobbly then went to the bench, there are times he looks like his brain is behind the play and not sharp at all. I think there is a very strong chance that perhaps he has a brain injury. He reminds me so much of Pronger before he finally retired it is scary. I remember Pronger making very simple plays and turning then into train wrecks on his final days, then he was later diagnosed with the brain trauma. I truly believe Wideman was half out of it on his way to the bench, and he had no control over his actions, it was like his defense preceptors in his head were screaming fight/defend yourself and unfortunately the ref was there while he was still under the haze from the hit. They should check him out, that's so uncharacteristic of him both in his Bruin days and last year with the Flames. He doesn't even normally retaliate when he gets hit, let alone on the ref. There is something going on with Wideman, id guess brain trauma. IT adds up like it, his response time the last few weeks are glaringly not the Wideman of even 6 months ago, wouldn't be the first one. Lindros, Pronger, a lot of enforcers whom now suffer from alarming depression rates to a point of almost suicide. I hope they evaluate him.
This was much more of my understanding of this incident when it happened. Especially of what we know now about CTE and brain injuries. Honestly, the linesman looked concussed too. Glad that this sort of head trauma is slowly but surely being eliminated from the game.
That was NOT an accident. I love hockey and I have watched it and played it for many years. The guy said that he didn't see the linesman. Come on this guy should be suspended indefinitely without pay. That was ridiculous. It wasn't even against my team. That is unacceptable behavior.
Ive been checked in the boards and he was seeing black blotches in his vision. He was heading for the other bench and at the last second regained his vision. This was at the surface looks bad but look at how his head hits the glass after the check. Even when he went to the bench he is still dazed. He should not get suspended.
you can’t mistake a human for a bench door and you can’t mistake a seat for a human either but if he was dazed bad he could’ve mistaken a human for another human.
+SirIceguy007 You heard it here first, folks. Go out and get yourselves concussed so you can attempt to murder or seriously hurt an innocent person immediately after. Obviously your defence when brought to court will be "Your honour, with all due respect, you clearly have never been concussed before... I don't think your judgement counts". Case dismissed.
And very shitty ones at that. Sometimes I believe the NFL and NHL officials get together and compete to see who could be shittier. I applaud Wideman and hope it happens a lot more often.
+1515AC Whatever helps you sleep at night, bud. Don't tell me you haven't had the same thoughts either. If anyone is a fucking angel it sure as hell isn't you.
unintentional, he is obviously dazed enough to have not seen the official until the very last second. This is evident because he pivots at the last second and puts his hands up because he wasnt seeing straight and as a natural instinct pushes the ref.
Yea, I don't know if he didn't see him or not, but I saw what looked like arm extention (intentional hit) possibly for not calling his hit from number 20
+Red Ripper 1) He is skating right towards him 2) He's looking right at the linesman 3) It looks more like he moved to the left 4) He had more than enough time to react 5) He clearly pushed the lineman out of the way
FederalBeatz DID YOU LOOK AT THE ANGLE HES SKATING IN? PRE REF, HE WAS GOING TO THE BOARDS AND TRIED TO MOVE LAST SECOND.... ITS NOT THAT HARD TO SEE ESPECIALLY IN 0.5
ill give you the definition of an concussion A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that affects your brain function. Effects are usually temporary but can include headaches and problems with concentration, memory, balance and coordination. Concussions are usually caused by a blow to the head, if you read this it says memory so that means he could of not remembered that the lineman was a player or an linesman he also could of forgot the rules.
He was concussed and the white stripes on the refs jersey could easily be mistaken for an opposing player. Anyone who disagrees with me has never had a concussion before.
I’ve had a concussion, you aren’t able to get on your feet without falling with a concussion. The fact he put his arms up, pushed forward on the ref, and recovered without any signs of falling over confirms he did it on purpose.
Craig Smith once in an adult league I got clobbered into the boards, I was really dizzy getting up, my teammate came up behind me to see if I was okay and I turned around and blindly swung at him in self defense. I don’t remember any of this but That’s what my friends told me. I was later diagnosed with a grade 2 concussion. I guess everyone is different though ?
Well think about this, he is allegedely concussed, goes in and hits the referee. If he was concussed, he wouldn't of stayed on his feet. People are different, yeah, but like why would he have to swing at him in self defense if he's 10 feet away from him?
As you can clearly see the hit he took against the board prior to colliding with the ref, he took a hard blow to the head, i wouldn't be surprised that he suffered a concussion and wasn't completely aware of his surroundings. After he sat back down on the bench he appeared to be wincing in pain and didn't seem to be fully aware of what was happening. I hope you have never personally experienced a hard blow to the head but in the short time afterward, you need some time to gather yourself because your head might be spinning and barely conscious of what is happening around you.
+Red Ripper lmao it wasn't an accident, why would he get his stick up and crosscheck him? He didn't even check to see if the linesman was alright after either, if it was an accident he would have.
+Red Ripper lmao it wasn't an accident, why would he get his stick up and crosscheck him? He didn't even check to see if the linesman was alright after either, if it was an accident he would have.
This is a tough one for me. On the one hand: yes he's dazed. On the other: he should've seen the linesman from a million miles away. he looked to shift his body. he extended his arms. He was woozy on the bench. He didn't even apologize. I'm going back and forth right now and really have no idea.
I've been wondering about this ever since I first saw it, didn't look like any punishment was being dished out, but now the official is suing him for injuries. Ref is probably gonna win it too.
Motive: evidence: the hit on W, is the motive. Evidence is W slow dazed response, smacking his stick on the ice before running into ref. Factors influencing collision w ref: a) the initial hit on W, b) the ongoing Flames line change, c) the ref blocking W shortest path to bench, and d) the Predators' players rushing up the ice toward the Flames blue line preventing W from avoiding the ref. Motive: if W stop to avoid ref and on coming players then too many men on the ice for Flames. Motive: frustration + necessity = collision. = suspension.
Pretty obvious that was a Flames telecast. There was more excuses flying around from the booth then rubber flying around on the ice that night. I happened to watch it initially with no sound and I was STUNNED.
a) he was hit head first into the boards. b) he was dazed skating off the ice. c) yes he hit the ref. but you can argue that he did attempt to step right. just before the hit. yes he still hit the ref but he at the least braced himself. at worst pushed through. d) if the linesman was sent to the hospital for a possible concussion. isn't it at all possible that Wideman should be considered as possibly concussion from a much bigger impact and could possibly have not known where he was... just some thoughts. hope to hear some actual arguments
I'll tell ya'll EXACTLY what happened. I know because I've been in that situation. The hit Wideman took shook him up and rattled his nerves. Seconds after someone got in his way and he lashed out. It's more of a mental blimp than anything. However, it can be controlled, therefore, Wideman does deserve the 20 games---nothing more.
+F. Mazz. Who are you trying to fool bub? The hit on Wideman in the corner was very minor, there are 20 hits every night in hockey games often much worse than that. He doesn't even look remotely "woozy" as he gets up and deliberately hits the linesman from behind. That guy should be suspended for at least the remainder of the season if not permanently.
+F. Mazz. I disagree with you on how shook up he was but props to you for acknowledging that even if he did have his bell rung he's still responsible for his actions.
That's the most stupid thing I heard, flames are the 2nd least penalized there bud. Get your facts straight before you balb your mouth on the Internet.
Look at his skates before the hit. You can clearly see he tried to avoid the ref, but it was either he falls or the ref falls. After a big hit he was a little wobbly and either didn't see the ref till' the end or maybe thought it was a Nashville player
How can they say "he doesn't see the linesman" when he CLEARLY looks right at him, gets his stick up with both hands, & plants it right into the guy's back?
Even if he is dazed, there's no way that the shove was accidental You can obviously see his shoulder move forward to push the linesman out of the way. That's a pretty sudden and sharp movement for someone who is supposed to be disoriented
"I didn't see the linesman until the last second." Has his head up the whole time looking in front of him. Gonna be hard to appeal that 20 game suspension
It looked pretty clear to me that Wideman was annoyed that the ref was in the way of the door and just shoved him hard. Look at the reaction of the Preds bench, they had a pretty good view of it.
Rick and Kelly were obviously defending Wideman, like all home announcers do. Even though Wideman was hit in the corner and appeared a bit woozy; it looked like he wanted to get off the ice quickly, but the linesman was blocking the entrance to the bench. He got frustrated and crosschecked the zebra for getting in the way. 10 game suspension easily.
Head injuries are a weird thing. I took a shoulder to the head once in a pickup game(i am 5' 5" so most guys are bigger than me and we just kind turned into each other). I remember getting hit and starting to get up and then the next thing I remember I was sitting on the bench. Every one there said that i looked fine and skated to the bench and even laughed and smiled about it. The point is that Wideman could have no clue that it even happened when it did. Your body kinda takes over and does stuff on its own from muscle memory in those cases. In the act of "cross checking" the ref it was most likely just a natural reaction to get the hands up when someone is coming towards him as the linesman was also skating backwards right at him.
It just doesn't add up. Why does a 10 yr veteran, supposedly angry about a no-call, hit a linesman who couldn't do anything for him? Why does he not argue his case with a ref? He's fought in the past, so he's not afraid to throw down. Why does he not go after the guy himself? He's an Assistant Captain, why does he not tell a 4th line guy to go introduce himself? I don't think Wideman's ever been suspended before. Why does he not just get a penalty, instead of costing himself so much dough with the obligatory giant suspension. Makes no sense at all. Unless, as he said, he was out of it and his head hadn't cleared. Very, very bizarre.
He's being sued along with the NHL by the linesman for $10,000,000. I don't know about that. The ref seemed ok and presumably finished officiating the game. The article says he never officiated another game after this incident and has injuries.
In my opinion, if it was an accident, Weidman would have known that his "accident " caused a potential injury to the linesman and wouldn't have ignored the fact that the linesman got slammed.
If this was a mistaken hit which would be understandable after the previous hit it would not be an issue. What the issue is that he brought his hands up and crosschecked the linesman and kept skating to the bench and acted as if nothing happened.
My question is, if the ref happened to be an opposing player like he thought it was, what would’ve happened. He was way too dazed to stay up in a scrum.
I'm not too sure about the part where he says "doesn't even see the linesman" he clearly had his head up and that looked like an intentional hit

+Ancients PvP ok sorry for being logical. Come back when you want a real discussion
so much idiots on this video there's not even a ref involved with this video!!!
Why would he hit the linesman. The refs call the penalties
Probably took his anger out on the next closet guy.
Not if they have brain damage. I think that's what he was going for
And very shitty ones at that. Sometimes I believe the NFL and NHL officials get together and compete to see who could be shittier. I applaud Wideman and hope it happens a lot more often.
+Darren Pinson And thus, this is why you're a piece of shit hick and always will be.
+1515AC Whatever helps you sleep at night, bud. Don't tell me you haven't had the same thoughts either. If anyone is a fucking angel it sure as hell isn't you.
Should say “Wideman cross checks linesman from behind”
lmao straight took out the ref that was ruthless
Once a Bruin, always Bruin....
Those Predators looked ready to jump the wall and get after him
unintentional, he is obviously dazed enough to have not seen the official until the very last second. This is evident because he pivots at the last second and puts his hands up because he wasnt seeing straight and as a natural instinct pushes the ref.
Robert Axworthy dude you’re an idiot 🤦♂️
This ref had to pay $8,000 in legal costs to the flames after he sued Wideman
And pay Wideman $3000
Yea, I don't know if he didn't see him or not, but I saw what looked like arm extention (intentional hit) possibly for not calling his hit from number 20
"I had no time to react" he said... "He got in my way" he said...
+FederalBeatz LOOK AT HIS FEET....... HE TRIED MOVING RIGHT
+Red Ripper
1) He is skating right towards him
2) He's looking right at the linesman
3) It looks more like he moved to the left
4) He had more than enough time to react
5) He clearly pushed the lineman out of the way
FederalBeatz DID YOU LOOK AT THE ANGLE HES SKATING IN? PRE REF, HE WAS GOING TO THE BOARDS AND TRIED TO MOVE LAST SECOND.... ITS NOT THAT HARD TO SEE ESPECIALLY IN 0.5
FederalBeatz HE HAD LITTERALLY HAD HIS FACE RAMMED INTO THE BOARDS IM PRETTY SUREY OU WONT NOTICE THINGS AS QUICKLY AS YOU WOULD USUALY NOTICE
FederalBeatz HAVE YOU SEEN HIM EVER GET PISSED OFF AT THE REFS? I MAY NOT WATCH A LOT OF HOCKEY, BUT I WOULD HAVE NOTICED
Wow this was 3 years ago already
Clean hit 100%
Dimitros troll
Wideman was dazed and didn't even see the ref. You can see Dennis move to the right slightly at the very last second before hits the ref.
Someone Needs To Do This To Chris Lee
ill give you the definition of an concussion A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that affects your brain function. Effects are usually temporary but can include headaches and problems with concentration, memory, balance and coordination. Concussions are usually caused by a blow to the head, if you read this it says memory so that means he could of not remembered that the lineman was a player or an linesman
he also could of forgot the rules.
He was concussed and the white stripes on the refs jersey could easily be mistaken for an opposing player. Anyone who disagrees with me has never had a concussion before.
Chris Mason ya. I remember walking right into a trash can after taking a hit in football. Just didn’t register.
Too bad it doesn't help your case even if you did this to another player and not the ref
I have respect for nhl refs because they're the only refs who know what the fuck they're doing.
They've gotten hit many times and fucked up goals
you kidding? the refs don't even try to call the rulebook.
+Logjambam Come over to Europe and watch a few games here, you'll never say a bad word against NHL refs :)
The refs in my league are absolute dogshit
+Kosta Thomas As I ref I always find the shitty players and teams complain the most.
looking back on it that was 100% deliberate
This still pisses me off. Get him off my team.
He slams his stick in frustration before the cross check. Clearly frustrated not dazed.
HE TRIED MOVING RIGHT ONCE HE REALIZED HE WAS THERE BUT IT WAS TOO LATE THIS WAS BY ACCIDENT
Monty FIRSTLY, LOOK AT THE FEET HE WAS AVOIDING GETTING INVOLVED IN THE PLAY BUT THE REF WAS THERE SO HE TRIED MOVING.
Monty THAT DIDNT WORK OBVIOUSLY
Monty THIS ANGLE DOESNT HELP EITHER BECAUSE IF YOU LOOK AT A DIFFRENT ANGLE HE TRIED WHAT LOOKED LIKE STOPPING
I would gave him a 5min major and a game misconduct for that
Man what did the ref do?
Lmao "Didnt see" that was obviously on purpose...
couldn't see the guy right in front of him, but he saw that door and bench pretty clearly.
nhl suspend him for 20 games... good i like that the organization is protecting their refs
He should have never been allowed to play again after that.
Some of the worst sports commentating you will ever hear.
This is a tough one for me. On the one hand: yes he's dazed. On the other: he should've seen the linesman from a million miles away. he looked to shift his body. he extended his arms. He was woozy on the bench. He didn't even apologize. I'm going back and forth right now and really have no idea.
wow the flames announcers just blew it, support your team, but try to make an effort to call the game right!
I've been wondering about this ever since I first saw it, didn't look like any punishment was being dished out, but now the official is suing him for injuries. Ref is probably gonna win it too.
Wideman geting sued for 10 million =]]
Very Very Very Clearly Intentional.
The best part is the opposing bench laughing their asses off. Lmao
= suspension.
the linesman sued him for 10.25 million dollars lmaoooo
Pretty obvious that was a Flames telecast. There was more excuses flying around from the booth then rubber flying around on the ice that night. I happened to watch it initially with no sound and I was STUNNED.
that's some good, old fashioned sociopathic behaviour my friends!
a) he was hit head first into the boards.
b) he was dazed skating off the ice.
c) yes he hit the ref. but you can argue that he did attempt to step right. just before the hit. yes he still hit the ref but he at the least braced himself. at worst pushed through.
d) if the linesman was sent to the hospital for a possible concussion. isn't it at all possible that Wideman should be considered as possibly concussion from a much bigger impact and could possibly have not known where he was...
just some thoughts. hope to hear some actual arguments
I think since he's dazed from the hit, he thought the ref was the guy who hit him and hit him, then noticing he bashed the ref
Flames have always been a dirty team. They've just been under the radar because they're mostly at the bottom of the standings.
+MrY3110w "he doesn't even see the linesmen"
Who gives a shit about referees anyways
+MrY3110w Ok give me five examples of them being a "dirty team".
are you kidding me 😂
That's the most stupid thing I heard, flames are the 2nd least penalized there bud. Get your facts straight before you balb your mouth on the Internet.
You can tell he tried to avoid at the last second by turning his skates
You can take the Dirty out of Boston, but you cant take the Boston out of the dirty
Look at his skates before the hit. You can clearly see he tried to avoid the ref, but it was either he falls or the ref falls. After a big hit he was a little wobbly and either didn't see the ref till' the end or maybe thought it was a Nashville player
10 million dollar hit as he just filed a lawsuit on Denis
and got laughed out of court so badly he was forced to pay for everyone's legal fees.
How can they say "he doesn't see the linesman" when he CLEARLY looks right at him, gets his stick up with both hands, & plants it right into the guy's back?
And you know dam well that ref is playing up on his " injury" like a Syrian immigrant...not agreeing with wideman but come on...
Even if he is dazed, there's no way that the shove was accidental You can obviously see his shoulder move forward to push the linesman out of the way. That's a pretty sudden and sharp movement for someone who is supposed to be disoriented
anyone here because of Vermette?
read the title again
How was Wideman not banned from the game for this?
What a truly bizarre incident.
you can clearly see him move to the left to line up with the ref...then lift his stick at the end...
Why are the commentators trying to say he didn't see the ref? He knew what he was doing
That out of control linesman should really pay more attention.
Good point, he was just standing there like an idiot.
+Brandin Beasley he should make a public apology
"I didn't see the linesman until the last second."
Has his head up the whole time looking in front of him.
Gonna be hard to appeal that 20 game suspension
It looked pretty clear to me that Wideman was annoyed that the ref was in the way of the door and just shoved him hard. Look at the reaction of the Preds bench, they had a pretty good view of it.
Uh, he totally checked that ref in the back of the head. You can see his arms push forward. He knew full well what he was doing.
I’m guessing he was not in his right mind at all after the hit he took. Sad for both guys.
Clean, routine hit by Salomaki. No reason to be all that shaken up after such a hit
It was confirmed after the fact that he received a concussion from the hit.... "routine hit"... c'mon.
"he doesn't even see the linesman"
Very, very bizarre.
almost the 1 year anniversary
If that happened in a beer-league game, the player would never see the ice again. Ever.
He's being sued along with the NHL by the linesman for $10,000,000.
I don't know about that. The ref seemed ok and presumably finished officiating the game. The article says he never officiated another game after this incident and has injuries.
Haha I love how shocked Barret Jackman and Roman Josi are.
Hard to tell if he was woozy and seen him at the last second or was pissed their was no call.
Wideman is probably still acting out on his frustration for letting Scott Walker (Carolina) walk in for the rebound to win in 2009 vs Boston.
He braced for the hit and kept up his arms, I don't see how anyone could even argue whether this was intentional or not....
How is this not a game misconduct?
Wideman is crazy
My question is, if the ref happened to be an opposing player like he thought it was, what would’ve happened. He was way too dazed to stay up in a scrum.
