Even if you choose not to do a reaction, I strongly recommend the official video. There is a movie sectioned into the video telling a more complete story. Its a lot to take in for a first listen, but adds immensely to the song. And honestly the musical performance is FAR better.

To the guitar pick question: it's not that they like "use up" or "go thru" so many during a performance, but they're nearby because there's I highly likely chance you'll drop one or maybe even just straight up break it depending on the music you play lol so they keep more very close by 😊

That is the way I first heard/saw it and the visuals give a whole extra level to this song. First the picks are there in case they drop, lose or break one and also back in the day it was customary for them to throw a ton of the picks out to the crowd during the concert I think it was Kiss that started to have special ones made up for every tour like a souvenir if you got one.

Metallica is one of the greatest bands in the world. Even today, they sell out stadiums and put out more energy than most modern performers. If you're looking for another reaction for them, I would suggest Enter Sandman or Creeping Death from 91' live show in Moscow. It was a historical moment after the fall of the soviet union, and the crowd was probably one of the largest you will ever see.

The movie's called "Johnny Got His Gun" from '71 based on the novel by Dalton Trumbo by the same name. The novel was based on a true story about a Canadian soldier during WW1. That's the movie in the music video. I made the mistake of watching that nightmare fuel when i was kid, and it's given me a lifelong fear of being locked in my mind because i can't hear, move, or speak.

  • @davidj161

Unfortunately James forgot the lyrics to the middle of the song. Sometimes that happens to him live but it’s important for the context. The middle verse that he forgot is “darkness, imprisoning me all that I see absolute horror, I cannot live, I cannot die, trapped in myself, body my holding cell”. And the next part is what he sings twice by accident which explains the landmine has taken his legs eyes arms etc. but yes this is such a powerful song and if you watch the original video to this song it’s very heartbreaking because they play clips from the movie about the soldiers that’s trapped inside his body and he just wants to die and he can’t.

The song is a lot more literal than you think. The book is about a solider who lost his limbs face and ears to an artillery shell and wakes up in a hospital not knowing where he is or if he is even alive. (Across enemy lines too, since he has no literal identity no one knows who he is.) The book then goes in chronological order as he recounts his most precious memories and how he got to where he was, it then jumps back and forth from his memories to his current situation where he is trying to understand what's going on. Once he comes to the realization its actually a pretty painful read since he has no way of communication. I mean obviously it can mean different things to different people but I thought I would put into context the story the song is based on. If you like reading I highly recommend it. Also thanks for the video! This has always been one of my favorite Metallica songs.

"Now that the war is through with me.
I'm waking up, I cannot see.
That there's not much left of me.
Nothing is real but pain now"
    "Darkness imprisoning me
    All that I see
    Absolute horror
    I cannot live
    I cannot die
    Trapped in myself
    Body my holding cell
    Landmine has taken my sight
    Taken my speech
    Taken my hearing
    Taken my arms
    Taken my legs
    Taken my soul
Left me with life in hell"
This is about as anti-war as a song can get. Hetfield did a marvelous job with the melody and lyrics to make a masterpiece.

On your question about the guitar picks, sure some break but think about the heat on stage with all the lights and everything shining on the performers. They of course get sweaty and a small bit of plastic can easily slip from your fingers. Can't stop a performance to go after a pick on the ground, so it's much easier to have as many as you can put on the mic stands that way you avoid any potential problems. Doesn't mean you're gonna use them all, but having extras doesn't hurt. They'll also occasionally give them out to fans throughout the show. So there's a lot of reasons to have so many.

A lot of guitarists will have a bunch of picks racked along the bottom of their guitar. At the most extreme end, I saw the late, great Dick Dale in concert a couple of times, and he would go through several picks in the course of one song! His roadie would reload him every few songs. I am sure there are others who make it through a whole show, depending on what their picks are made of.
Also, I agree with everyone who recommends that you watch the original video. It's one of the few videos that actually adds to the song.

In the video, they show clips from the movie where you can see the patient struggling and the intensity of the music builds up as his frustration escalates. The rapid fire of the drums are meant to sound like machine gun fire. The chaotic guitar solo is meant to mimic his mind spiraling out of control. What makes Metallica great is that the music itself supports the story.

It's been mentioned the offical video has clips from the movie Johnny Got his gun. It was based on a book writen in 1936 to oppose US involvement in what became WWII. The book follows the life of Joe Bonham, a young American soldier serving in World War I, awakens in a hospital bed after being caught in the blast of an exploding artillery shell. He gradually realizes that he has lost his arms, legs, and all of his face (including his eyes, ears, nose, teeth, and tongue), but that his mind functions perfectly, leaving him a prisoner in his own body. Now go back and listen to song from about the 11 minute mark. It's a killer.

Lars Ulrich Danish drummer co founder of Metallica along side guitarist James Hetfield. Fun fact Lars used to play tennis here in Denmark before moving to US. Imagine how many rackets he must have smashed ))

Hey, good on you for doinf the research, I like it. For most songs thats best. This one really shines with the official video, though. Adds so much emotion.

You would've understood it without the interview if you watched the original music video. The interview ads a little more to it though. Worth checking out the original video.

Guitar picks come in different thicknesses. You use different picks to make slightly different sounds. Thinner picks let you strum faster, thicker picks let you pluck more precisely. That's most of the reason you see a lot of picks sometimes.

Honestly I’m glad you got introduced to this song this way with the backstory and information. The official video has a lot going on with it and a voice over that can be confusing. But hearing the song on its own is a good way to start, and then watch the video and hear the album version. Definitely worth checking out at some point.

Hey Britt, The guitarist Kirk Hammett's White Zombie guitar is a tribute to an old horror movie ( huge horror movie fan ). However there is a band called White Zombie, with great songs. Check out Thunder Kiss 65 from WZ. Total headbanger. Also if you want some more amazing drumming, check out Black Sabbath War Pigs.

Chris Cornell covered this song and completely changed it up. It is an acoustic version where he used U2's song One music and sang Metallica's One's lyrics. It puts a whole other feel to the song

As a guitarist picks slip from sweat and get dropped etc. I usually have 4 per set or 12 for the whole night. May not use them but better to have them and not need them than to need them and not have them. Big time players use them and toss them to the crowd I have several Ive collected over the years

6:30 you only "need" one pick, but they can get very slippery and become easy to drop. So if you drop one during a performance, it's 1000x easier to grab another one from the mic stand rather than trying to find it on the floor haha

Guitar picks are sort of like sunglasses; they'll last until you lose them. The extra picks are there in case you drop one during a song, like you said.

Also many bands during live performances like to throw guitar picks out into the crowd throughout their performance. It's a great momento if you're lucky enough to catch them.

Lars is the drummer. Super energetic dude. After watching him play you will not be surprised that he was an up n coming armature tennis player out of high school. If you enjoyed this I highly recommend you watch the official music video. The sound quality is much better (clearer). The book the song is based off was made into a movie. The band use scenes from the movie inter cut with them playing the song to give you a great visual of the lyrical story being told.

    Guitar picks needed = 1…..
guitar picks wanted, and used if available = infinite

Famous guitar players often throw their guitar picks into the crowd throughout the show so they don't want to run out 🤣 it's that simple

Britt, speaking of drumming footwork, Lars Ulrich from Metallica is my 2nd favorite drummer of all time behind only Def Leppard's Rick Allen, who has only one arm so he really uses his feet whilst playing the drums, you should check out Def Leppard.
