    I stand by edx as one of the greatest gifts to students. Top unis like harvard, MIT and oxford literally give you teaching for free.

    Hi guys! I'm from Peru but in my country there's no so many essay competitions. I'm 17 and if you know any international essay competition (if it's related with STEM, the better) I would be very grateful if you can tell me

    Hi, with regards to MOOcs, how should I write about them on my personal statement?

    • @Oxcentric
      @Oxcentric  4 года назад +1

      Hi! It probably depends on what kind of MOOC it is, really. I'd say to try and pick out the most interesting or challenging thing you learned and talk about that - generally speaking I understand it's better to choose a specific aspect to go into more detail than try and discuss it too broadly. If there's anything further from the MOOC you think you could do to synthesise that understanding, like write a blog post, I'd recommend giving that a try to finish off the ABC style (referring to my personal statements video). It might help to mention who provided the course? Hope this helps!

      @@Oxcentric Wow I am impressed with that quick response!! 😂 Thanks for the information. I really like the idea of writing blog posts to synthesise knowledge - really cool since it could also contribute as a supercurricular activity. What would be the maximum number of supercurriculars I should focus on in my personal statement? Just enquiring because quality > quantity.

    • @Oxcentric
      @Oxcentric  4 года назад

      @@novam3rcy159 An exact number is, unfortunately, impossible to pinpoint. Additionally, I expect you might talk about different supercurricular activities at different lengths - for example, in mine I talked for a whole paragraph about an engineering taster week but only mentioned an essay competition in a short sentence. My whole statement was focused around about 5/6 big supercurricular activities like summer schools and work experiences, supplemented with extras like research and the aforementioned essay competition. However, I did do quite a lot so don't worry that mine is a baseline! Personally I'd say at least 3/4 substantial things you can talk about shows a very strong interest - though this is not based on any evidence beyond what I might have personally done. Your quantity vs quality point is entirely right here though - I'd much rather see a strong statement with 1 big supercurricular and a handful of small ones fully developed than one with 20 barely explained!

    What essay competitions did you enter?

    • @Oxcentric
      @Oxcentric  4 года назад +6

      I entered the Oxford Scientist schools essay writing competition and the Immerse essay competition. The Oxford Scientist competition runs 3 times a year, once for each term. Hope that helps!

    How is your wider reading shown in your applications??
    If you make a project, do you only mention it in your application?

    I have done just one MOOC about basic mechanics. Is this enough or do you recommend to do more MOOCs?

    • @Oxcentric
      @Oxcentric  4 года назад +2

      Ball Pyro It’s hard for me to know exactly without better awareness of what else you’ve done. Is this MOOC the only activity you want to discuss on your personal statement? Do you have plans to do other things? What subject are you applying for? If the MOOC is the only super-curricular activity you’d feel happy discussing, I’d suggest trying to do more something more - though, this does not have to be more MOOCs, as variety is often beneficial.

    • @Oxcentric

      This is a good question - and one that probably deserves its own video honestly! I think I considered what I'd feel happiest dedicating my time to and what I personally excelled at. I've always found maths and physics some of my strongest subjects, but wasn't that attracted to any pure maths or physics degrees, so that helped me look towards engineering. I remember I decided on engineering when I chose to do Further Maths at A-Level, since I knew I'd need that for applying to top unis. Don't forget that what subject you study doesn't have to be forever if you have multiple passions, especially as people move careers increasingly often.
