Wow…two intentional things here: 1. James standing back. Such small gesture by him but hugely noted in the presence of the band on stage. 2. The volume of the bass. That’s probably the loudest I’ve heard a Metallica bass in a LONG time. The whole song was basically a bass solo!! Amazing performance.

I had the pleasure of eating pizza with Rob when he was with Suicidal. They were here in Houston opening for Queensryche in 91'. I was seventeen. I had to take the Park and Ride bus to downtown because I hade no car. The bus put me at the Summit (venue) four hours early. After thirty minutes outside the venue this van stops at the bottom of the stairs where my friends and I were sitting and Rob gets out of the van and says, "Hey you guys, you want some free pizza?" Just from that experience I can say Rob is a really great guy. I still have the cassette tape he gave me. It was a Suicidal promo tape that had three songs on it which Rob made sure all the band members signed it. Such a cool guy.

the one thing that's such a shame about robert is that i don't hear much of his contributions in the newer metallica songs/albums. i'll never forget that awesome video of him playing flamenco guitar and james taking inspiration from that and turning it into all nightmare long. don't get me wrong, i'll always love metallica, but compared to cliff and jason, rob is the most well rounded bassist. he's proficient in jazz (he taught his 10 year old son jaco pastorius songs for the love of god), slap funk, flamenco, and thrash metal. if i remember correctly, his only contribution to the hardwired album was the intro to man unkind's intro. alot of people complained about that song except for the intro

I felt like I was transported back to the early days, when I first heard the song and was blown away by Cliff on bass, and how he played like a regular guitarist, instead of holding up the song and giving it that depth as a bassist does. I had no idea at the time, that a bass could be played like that. 😄 Cliff was one of a kind and Rob did him proud. Very well done and an amazing trip down memory lane. The boys still sound so good, I haven't seen them since their earlier days in the late 80's and early 90's before i had my first son in '93 who has seen Metallica himself now, about 5-6 years ago, I raised him right & he and mom still go headbanging to our favorite shows at least once a year usually in Sept, his birthday month. We have some shows to make up for the 4 yrs he did in the Army & we didn't get to go for 2 of those 4 years he signed a contract to commit to, because of the plandemic. 😝
I'm very close to James, Lars & Kirk's ages, they have me beat only by a year or two. I started listening right before MOP dropped, during RTL which this song is from. I might have to see them 1 more time, for old times sake with my favorite concert sidekick, my oldest son. We saw Lamb Of God with KSE most recently, in Sept of '22 amazing show, they bring it every time.🤘🏻😎

You have to give Rob credit, trying to fill Cliff's shoes. This is one of their epic songs, a favorite of many of us. Cliff was a true metal genius with that bass wah.
With Rob, I saw him when he was a kid in Suicidal, he was muy loco. All over the place, as the youngest member of ST at that time.
Now look at him. Metallica. Cliff's famous sounds. Love him or hate him, you have to respect Robert Trujillo.
