I recently purchased a huge coin collection from a family. Most of the coins we collected prior to 1980 and while a large portion were organized in Albums, thousands of coins were accumulated an stored in cigar boxes as loose coins. This video features over 1200 wheat pennies with the majority of them from the 1910s, 1920s, 1930s. Let's see how many key or semi-key day wheat cents we can find in this pile.
The Lincoln Wheat Cent is a classic and iconic coin in U.S. numismatics. It was first minted in 1909 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth. The coin features a profile of Lincoln on the obverse (front) and two wheat ears on the reverse (back).
Victor D. Brenner designed the coin, making it the first U.S. circulating coin to feature a real person-Abraham Lincoln. The original design sparked some controversy because Brenner's initials, "VDB," were prominently displayed on the reverse. After public outcry, the initials were removed later in 1909 but reinstated in a smaller size in 1918.
The Lincoln Wheat Cent was minted until 1958, making it a staple in pocket change for nearly half a century. The coin underwent a few changes over the years, including alterations to the reverse design in 1959 when it was replaced by the Lincoln Memorial design.
Collectors often seek out Lincoln Wheat Cents for their historical significance, design, and sometimes for rare and valuable variations. The 1909-S VDB (with the initials) is a notable key date, and certain years have minting errors that increase their desirability among collectors.
You won't want to miss any of this series if you love coin roll hunting. I'm hunting through all of these old coins looking specifically for varieties and rarities that may be hiding in these piles. This is somewhat similar to coin roll hunting, looking for the special treasures or varieties, but better!
