      Yeah absolutely. I've been a Steve main since T5, so it's almost been 20 years. He is such a unique and badass character and I immediately fell in love with his fighting style. He is very very difficult to play, as TMM said in the video, but at least playing Steve taught me Tekken fundamentals. You don't really have cheese with Steve, so every victory has to be earned. If you wanna win with Steve, you need good fundamentals, and that's what playing him teaches you. Can't wait to play with him in T8 💪

    Steve is actually how i learned to play tekken, i thought other characters were difficult due to having 4 attack buttons for each limb but steve really only had 2 and the other 2 were more movement options. Over time i learned more and more how to move and build momentum in a fight. My favorite part was learning what attacks i can duck and sway around for super stylish punishing, i blasted so many akumas into the air after i learned i could duck under his fireball and dempsey rolling under Jins rage art is the most satisfying feeling.

  • @sirjoel6415

    How to play steve:
    1. Suprisingly, steve doesn't really care too much about frames. This means if you make the right reads about high evasion with duck or sway, or even combine step + sway together, you can negate many minus frames with movement.
    2. Steve's strongest feature imo is his constant pressure, despite the fact that a lot of it is purely in your head and not "actually" dangerous. Take Heera Malik vs Knee for example, the reason Heera beats knee's steve is due to a difference in playstyle, overwhelming opponents with duck ins and cancels and every aspect of steve's toolkit as opposed to knee's fundamental safe gameplay.
    Steves stances can cancel into each other and almost everything is safe, which is used to bait reads. For example, df2 is a safe mid that can be cancelled into duck-in, and duck cancelled into ws1. This is one of my favourite lines as unless you're very gifted in reaction speed its not easy to challenge and its very safe, its also great because it tells you what the opponent reacts with. If the opponent does a generic df1, you can expose it by canceling the df2 duck-in into a punch parry, or by chaining duck in into backsway launch. If the opponent reacts with a low, you can fake pressure with duck-in and low parry. If the opponent reacts with a high just duck-in 2 launch, and if the opponent doesn't react they get more mental pressure from extended duck.
    3. Timing. Steve doesn't actually have as many launching tools or even counterhit tools apart from b1 that is super busted. Pkb 2 is high and df2 lost its tracking and isn't a great panic move, which means that you can't spam many counterhit options when you're in a pinch as much as you think. Even b1 is susceptible to being read and launched since its a high (I can't do it but I consistently play with a demon that somehow can punish b1 on demand). This means that counterhits should be placed with intent. Try dash blocking multiple times to change up your timing before throwing a b1.
    4. Combo optimization is actually crazy important on steve. This could be the difference maker in winning and losing a round, especially at the wall. For example, a high wallsplat with steve can be followed up with Sonic fang > Rocketpunch into flicker > Duck cancel > f2,1 b > Machinegun blows. Depending on the map if you get a wallsplat with rocketpunch, you can even convert into a full combo by delaying and stepping into a pickup.
    How to counter steve:
    1. Although Steve may seem to be overwhelming you, alot of his pressure is a bluff. He has rather poor low pokes so holding back and baiting an extended duck guard break is often a great idea.
    There is nothing steve can press after a blocked move into duck-in that can beat generic df1, unless its a punch parry. Simply stay calm and vary your responses as he's pressuring you.
    2. Avoid the wall at all costs, if you cannot avoid the wall, be patient while hugging it. Steve has great mindgames and 5050s at the wall, with even an unreactable throw that guarantees a wallsplat or some sort of damage. Whenever you are pressured, try to step and block away from the wall. If you end up reaching the wall, watch out for his bullshit, alot of his moves when blocked doesn't mean its your turn since he can still sway either way for more pressure or throw you. Simply wait for him to do more stuff and keep side-walking. For example, rocketpunch into flicker can be cancelled into right sway 2 for a wallbounce or left sway 1 f 1 1 flicker for plus frames. If you wait this out you might have a chance to retaliate, but even then he might throw out a high crushing move and wall combo you again.
    3. Beware of wall throw. Understand what the steve player wants. If you pushed him into the wall, a good steve would think of using his backsway throw to switch positions for a wallsplat. If he pushed you to the wall, he most likely wants a wallsplat. If you've been holding back too much, beware of extended duck 2 and lows.
    4. Surprisingly, you CAN actually step steve. Especially his pkb moves. I've been sidewalked many times by a fellow steve main. With the removal of tracking in df2, steve doesn't actually have many useful tracking tools with the only one being pkb 2, which has shit range and is a high that has to be manually inputted through a stance. Try stepping his moves while blocking, just don't press a button while stepping.
    5. Tracking moves negate steve's movement and setups ALOT. He cannot challenge as many of your frames if you take away his movement.
    6. Lastly, steve is a boxer, meaning punch parrys would almost always work.

  • @IAMOP
    @IAMOP 10 месяцев назад +48

    One more thing is Steve has lot of strings you would think you can duck and punish but you can get counter hit trying to punish.

      Almost all of those are punishable on block, differently from Hwoarang's kicks where it's still his turn. Those are there to test your patience pretty much, they're not particularly good. Granted, the punishes you get aren't really good either, a lot of those strings range from -10 to -13.

    Another underrated utility that Steve has is his PKB stance. I've made many nice comebacks due to its mixups with d1, 1,2, the delayable df 1,1 string, and throwing in the sick u2 launcher after I get them to anticipate d1. Don't sleep on Steve, he's a great character that has a counter-playstyle for most types of opponents.

    I tend to gravitate towards Boxer characters in fighting games because usually they have the best jab. And for me as a player, it is very important for my Main to have a great jab. I think Boxing is super cool, but I don't choose the Boxers because they're the Boxers. It just so happens that I gravitate towards them because of the previous statement. And IMO, if the Boxer character doesn't have the best jab/jabs in the game, the game is straight up a farce. They're a god damn Boxer, if their jabs aren't the best, that literally doesn't make any sense at all.

    - shit range on most pokes.
    - extremely bad at comebacks
    - low range lows
    - low range punishes outside of -13
    - no good launcher for punish
    - Shit throw game
    - Mix between good tracking and awefull, depending on moves.
    - No Bullshit you can spamm all day with no risk, super tracking, long range and ch launch properties (ex. Noctis 2,2)
    - Awesome 11 frame punish....EXTREMEPLY bad above that that.
    Pros:
    -b1
    - df2
    -121
    - Rage drive
    - Weave and duck.
    - Safe if you don't need to actually preassure at all.

I think the developers have realized that the winrate that players achieve with Steve is too low, because he doesn't have all the basic tools that other characters do. Fun fact: In T5DR Steve's 1 jab was the fastest 1 jab in the game. I believe it was 10 or 11 frames while everyone else's was 12 or above.
    In terms of Steve being high tier, but not top tier, TMM is right on the money here. Steve is very similar to Maxi from SC: fast, oppressive, stance heavy, below average lows and terrible punishment.
    His bad lows and weak punishment keep him from being top tier, especially in a game that is dependent upon good lows to open an enemy up (since throws are almost useless), and if you don't have good lows, you can at least punish mistakes, but Steve cannot do that very well either.
    Steve is like 50% of a character, but he's so safe and that's what saves him most of the time from being trash tier.

      Steve also sees a high pick rate in pro play, especially Knee. Game is very oriented around defense and you'll see time up almost every round. Steve as a safe character with poke complements the pro gameplay.

      i wrote this on my phone half assedly, and i feel like i should clarify before i get shit on LOL - this is a super reductionist way of thinking of steve, i think he is a cool character; fun to play and fun to play against.
      his strengths play themselves, his weaknesses make it REALLY awkward.
      i do want to say that his 10 frame and ws1 2 are both super high damage and advantage though so losing out on some launch punishes is kinda* made up for in that way

    Can someone explain me what TMM said at 2:17 - 2:40? I don't understand the "cancel into flicker, and then flicker is stance cancelled". What are the commands to input after doing b+1. Should I crouch first or go to flicker stance after doing b+1? And how is this safe, isn't simply doing a b+1 safe already? 🤔

    • @ShadowMostro
      @ShadowMostro 10 месяцев назад +1

      B1 is safe I think if you input DB (crouch) after it

    • @KeitaroHirochi
      @KeitaroHirochi 10 месяцев назад +1

      b1 is -13 or -14 on block unless you go into flicker and cancel flicker with crouch, then it's -3 or so.

      You always want to go into FLK from certain moves, mainly B1 and qcf 1B. Now cancelling with db isn't something you should necessarily always do. If your opponent is playing patiently and allowing you time to press after they've blocked a move that ends in FLK and very small frame disadvantage, there are good buttons to press. Or you could cancel in same scenario and do a while rising or full crouch attack. Maybe your opponent is retaliating with quick mids. Normally your cancel can be done in time to stand and block any mid again, but maybe your timing is off that day and your getting tagged. You dont have to cancel, you can just block in flicker. And believe it or not, this is just a small sample and one tiny facet of all the decision trees Steve has, which is what makes him so interesting.

    It will always surprise me what Tekken only players find difficult. Not even throwing shade either. Its like so many characters play similar so when 1 plays different, they are considered hard. I wished we got more characters like him, Azucena has that stance stuff but she looks pretty normal.
