Beside the flight characteristics and the forward gun charactersitics the turrent of the P-61 was in the past the biggest pain. Even if another plane could outturn the P-61, it takes a while until the P-61 comes into the gunsight. Meanwhile the P-61 gunner typically starts a fire or damages the control surfaces which results in the P-61 coming out victorious. In contrast the gunner of a XP-58 Chain Lightning will struggle to hit an enemy in a turn fight making it less likely to get the same critical damage as a P-61 gunner. A BV P.203 typically does not engage in turn fights and therefore this is a different story.
The XP-58 was, basically, cancelled by the P-61 when it came out. Unfortunately, the P-61's nerfs won't be enough to restore the XP-58 to a position of prominence. It remains behind the P-61 and the two Twin Mustangs. However, a really well-flown XP-58 now has a much better chance of beating a P-61, when previously it had little chance.
@@TheNobleQI agree, but my point was a different one: If I fly some fighter (no matter if high energy or turn fighter) or a multirole, I cannout outrun a P-61, but I also practically cannot outturn it, because before I can get the gunsight onto the P-61 the turret of the P-61 does cripple me down. With the reducion of the turn rate of the P-61 to 13sec fighters and multiroles get a better chance of winning the turn fight, but the angles of the turret are still a problem. - Please also have in mind, that a fight must not take too long - otherwise some 3rd plane (most likely: an enemy plane) will arrive and end the turn fight. - Before the nerf of the P-61 attacking a P-61 was only possible in a situation where the P-61 already battles someone else. In a 1vs1 situation the P-61 did win in many cases because of the turret.
I think you'll find the high DPS fighters will beat the turret now. Yes, you're right about it still taking a long time to knock down the P-61 and therefore perhaps being heavily damaged by the turret, but now you won't be at the limits of your manoeuvrability. You'll be able to easily outturn the P-61 and do more damage more quickly. Certainly I'm now confident about taking on a P-61 in planes I never was before, though your warning about taking it on in an enemy furball is a wise one. It's also clear to me the P-61 has almost been extinguished in the game. I'm seeing maybe a single plane in every 3 to 5 battles. This tells me most people are finding it difficult to play now. That said, if you do see one, it's likely to be well flown. Time will tell! Thanks for being patient and explaining what I'd missed previously.
I first joined WOWP about 6 months ago, and both heard about and experienced the controversy surrounding the P-61. I was shocked to find it for sale in the premium shop yesterday and bought it on the spot so I could experience things from the inside of the cockpit this time. Then, less than 3 hours after finding this video to see what equipment I should use, I returned it. (So glad I never flew it as this voids the possibility of a return) I'll spend my $50 elsewhere and be glad I dont have to worry so much anymore.
Well, I'm sure there are plenty of things upon which to spend your $50 that you will enjoy. Certainly, it's true that the P-61 is no longer the formidable plane about which you had heard and, as a newer player, I suspect that you've made a wise decision. An experienced player will still be able to do well in this plane, which means not flying it like a light fighter, but like a traditional heavy. As I've mentioned in other comments here, that seems to have discouraged many players and the P-61 is seen nowhere near as often as it was prior to the nerf. I would say now that, if you see one, beware, because it's likely to be flown by a good player. I hope you enjoy your continued journey in Planes!
Before people cry about the nerf, to the extent that the P-61 is now similar to the other heavies, it still has the 360 degree turret with 80 degree elevation, which is still a powerful gimmick in limited engagements
The turret is now what makes it different. It's not an awful plane now, it's just that it's no longer overpowered. I'm pleased with the adjustments, focusing solely on the plane itself, that the WoWp team has made.
Badly flown P-61s or ones not built for turning would have been in your compass, but one flown well and built for turning would have caused you to take so long to kill it (assuming you got the advantage) that you would have likely died to its friends or its rear turret first. Now, post-nerf, the P-61 will present you with no problems in a turn fight.
@@TheNobleQ My Moonbat is a full turn build and as long as I did not take significant damage getting into position killing a p61 was not difficult. turn rating of 78 (9.4 second) combined with the gun output was enough in most cases.
Hello! Thank you for sharing this information. I would like some advice if I may. I am having a hard time dogfighting with other blackwidows. I have tried to make it as maneuverable as possible, maxing me out at 57. I am still getting outturned and have seen that players have gotten theirs in the 60s range. Any suggestions? I am trying to compare my stats with what you have here in the video and mine is still at 57. Thank you
57 is pretty good if you don't pull a few tricks. Those "tricks" are: 1) Using an experimental lightweight wingframe and an experimental lightweight power unit, setting the bonus characteristics for maximum manoeuvrability. If you have special project equipment, even better. 2) Putting a well-trained Elise Clark, the special pilot, in the cockpit, making sure she has Aerobatics Expert and Aerodynamics Expert alongside her special "Maneuver Expert" skill. If you're willing to forego a polished skin in the second airframe slot and use reinforced skin instead, you can achieve something like a manoeuvrability rating of 64.
Nice video Noble Q!I don't have the Black Widow but is nice to see a nerf to it. I mean, the P-61 outmaneuvered almost any plane, including some fighters. Im playing the British line, at tier IX now, and I would like to ask you a question with your permission. Which is the most friendly tech tree line after the british one? I thinking about the Soviet, Americans and Germany, I mostly fly fighters, multiroles and I really love heavys (I falled in love with the Beaufighter and the entire british heavy line) and when I need time to relax I like bombers, I was thinking the soviet line because it have tier 3 bombers, but I would like a professional opinion. Thank you very much!
:) My opinion is only as good as the next person's, bar that it has quite a bit of experience behind it. You're spoiled for choice there. I don't know about "most friendly", but for variety, I think the German tech tree lines would be a good choice, with the Soviet bombers thrown in since I think they're the most fun to fly.
Thanks for the video. I believe that the P-61 nerf is not enough, this plane still breaks the balance of the game. A powerful gunner, a powerful course armament of the aircraft, still high maneuverability for a heavy fighter. It is necessary to write your reviews to the User Support Center))
I doubt it will be nerfed again any time soon. It's early days, but I don't feel that it needs another nerf currently. We'll see, though, when people adapt to the changes.
I think the way to go with the P-61 now is to exploit its robustness, with a full or partial "tank" build, and compete in the traditional spaces for heavies, taking on bombers, GAAs and other heavies, whilst taking opportunities to "boom and zoom" fighters, especially with that turret to help damage or finish them off. What it can no longer do is occupy the same space as fighters and win turn fights, which it used to be able to do. It's interesting that most people either cannot make that adjustment or are unwilling to do so, because the P-61 has largely disappeared from the EU server.
@@TheNobleQ indeed, haven't seen as many of them recently. Coming from the 109k - 109TL I guess I'm already familiar with what I can or can't out turn. I'll experiment with the builds you're proposing, we'll see, thank you.

Would have been expensive to get the plane - not worth it for me. esp. with all the crashes, that ruined the fun. Not event driven reasons: 1. Met too many P-61 in absolute superpower condition. When one team showed up with two P-61 specialists, the match was won by them (like a default setting) Not sure, if they are still that overpowered, but I don't care ... took them one year of players complaining from day 1 on ... 2. The maps got boring. Pick a plane and you can guess the map you wil get. Just switching around the plants and airfileds is not enough. This game needs more new content. 3. There are a lot of unbalanced matches. In times of AI and after all that programming time, it should be possible to get a even number of specialists on both sides. Most times, you just have to open the team-list and you know, how the match will end. I guess, I have a 80% rate on that guessing. 4. The daily tasks are very strange sometimes. Example: Destroy 200 AAs in all three tier sections? I have seen bombers, that only destoyed AAs. You can't win that way and it is not funny. 5. I don't know ... I loved that game, but I lost it (or it lost me). With the moonbat, the next superpower plane for money (or lots of time) showed up and it feels, like the free-to-play times are more or less over. I am a casual gamer and I hop in a game for one hour (maybe more on weekends). So I walk away from ranting kids, writing klingon chat messages and all that stuff. A peaceful life 😉 Have fun and I wish you the best matches you cant get in that game.
I can't and won't argue with a great deal of what you say. I recognise the feelings you are expressing as being similar to mine regarding World Of Tanks over a year ago. I took the same decision with that game and I can say I've never regretted it. I suspect you won't regret yours, which is WoWp's loss. Good luck finding new entertainments!
That's a good point. The nerfing of the P-61 will give more space to the Me 262. However, if the B-29Cs return en masse, the problem will be stopping them all. A single B-29C was a nuisance, but several of them, an impossible problem.
I agree. Unfortunately, with the use of special equipment and Elise Clark, it is possible to put the plane back to 80-90% of what it was before the nerf. That still means that some planes that it outclassed now counter it, but also that it's still a pest.
This is what I think has happened. A large number of players have stopped playing the P-61 because the nerfs, so it's not as prevalent as once it was. However, those who know the game have been able to counter the nerfs so that the P-61 can be something like 80% - 90% of the plane it was. Those players continue to be effective in the plane, even though there are now certain planes that can reliably take it out when previously they couldn't. The result is that you see them a bit less than you did before, but when you see them, probably they're going to be flown well and difficult to beat. Their ability to stop other planes doing what they need to do to win a battle, their 'area denial' capability if you like, wasn't diminished enough by these nerfs.
would have been better to leave it be and raise it's tier. This plane is already not as formidible as it's real life cousin. Just give it more difficult opposition rather than make it a weaker plane. is a shame.
I think in this case something needed to be done about the Black Widow occupying, with great success, not only the heavy role but also that of the light fighter. Moving it to tier 9 wouldn't have solved the latter problem, I believe. I think the WoWp team is asking players to play the plane as a heavy and stop playing it as a light fighter. In my opinion, that should have been the case from the day it was introduced. Unlike the XP-54, where you made a similar suggestion, I don't think this would have worked with the P-61. However, now we will never know for sure.
