Boos go instantly back in furniture if none of their wall warps are enabled; wall warps get enabled by area, so until you defeat chauncey, area 2 boos cannot go anywhere and return to their furniture; after defeating bogmire, area 3 is enabled, and after boolossus area 4; interestingly the sitting room and guest room are linked to the wrong area
As for lydia and the twins, they only spawn once neville is defeated, glitched mansion or not; chauncey only spawns when lydia is defeated.
Honestly,this info was quite easy to find out, and I'm honestly surprised you just shrug it off as part of glitched states rather than look at it in a "clean" game.
Something you didn't mention: if you approach the diamond-shape door from the other side when you have the key, the cutscene still plays as if you're in the balcony (effects and all); if you then end the blackout, the back area of the hallway will actually be lit (that hallway is actually 2 rooms, the length of the telephone room and clockwork room respectively); this is the only way the game lights up any of the attic/basement hallways with gameplay.
You might have noticed that Orville is the only twin that drops pearls when being captured, which is likely tied to him being the one that registers the twins as being caught
interesting. That was probably easier to program than splitting the pearls between the two

That would have been cool if the game had a 1% chance of showing that but as soon as it's out of the player's line of sight the painting goes back to normal.

Fun Fact i played this game for 10 years before finally knowing you could find the twins by using the vacuum on the boxes. So for those 10 years of playing the game i would guess until i got them both. Which always annoyed me when they called me a cheater afterwords
same, but when i played it again bc why not, i noticed that in one of neville's books he mentioned the twins being afraid of *all* the elements, including wind, hence why the vaccum also works and not only fire, water and ice
You can also use first person mode to look at their hearts! That's how I always remember doing it.
Finally I’m not alone in this
I’ve been playing the game for years and always tried to manually find them until about 3 years ago when I realized that I could use the ice element to make the box shake. I read the book in nanas room often but it just never clicked.
7:44 You'd think King Boo would have been in both places at once rather than having him actually move from the Altar to the door to blow you away
The thing where the Boo comes out then pops back in the furniture happens if you spawn a Boo in an Area, whose previous Area Boss' key you haven't collected yet. So for instance if you don't get Chauncey's Heart Key then you go and try to capture the Boo from Mirror Room/Ballroom/Storage Room (etc), it just won't let the Boo stay out to be captured as the game's checking to see if you completed the previous Area.
Also, another way to tell that the game really only counts the twins once Orville (I assume that's him given he flies the plane like Orville Wright, the red shirt twin) is captured is the fact that he drops pearls when capturing him, whereas Henry does not. (Same goes for the blue Toy Soldier, he drops pearls, the rest do not.)

the thing about capturing orville is that he drops the pearls and his capture decides what frame the painting is in. same goes for the blue guard in the clockwork room.
So if you mess up the other twin it doesn't count against you?

A day or two ago, I looked up if Decino had played that doom level myhouse.wad and he hadn't, but 5 mins later he announced that he is gonna live stream it soon
Everything here explained (most of this is kinda speculation)
Defeating Boolossus in Area 1 will trigger an advancement to Area 4 since he is programmed as the Area 3 boss, so he advances you to Area 4 despite being in Area 1.
In the blackout the ghosts can spawn beyond the wall in the Boo Hideout, and they will fall due to the surface not being solid, a model in a game always needs solid ground to walk on if programmed to walk.
Triggering a cutscene with a portrait ghost in the blackout will crash the game since the model won’t be loaded in game and the game will not know what to do.
The glitched state of the mansion appears because it saved in the blackout, and that is impossible, so it thinks it’s in the normal version but knows it’s in a blackout, glitching the game’s state. Causing portrait ghosts to reappear but some will not, and causing things like not being able to clear rooms since the lights are off and causing portrait ghosts to glitch out and transfer to each other.
Reverse gravity works everywhere since it was programmed for simple rooms which causes every other area to have it.
Henry And Orville is kinda confusing. A Portrait Ghost drops pearls and gives you better pearls based on how well your play is, what am I about to say probably applies to Clockwork Soldiers when talking about the blue soldier. Henry And Orville have two different health, Orville is the one who drops the pearls, when the ghost drops pearls, your rank is being tracked, as the game needs to know what pearl to give you, so capturing it will result in defeating the boss and getting a portrait, so capturing Henry and not Orville will give you nothing since Henry never drops pearls, defeating Orville and leaving will basically mean you beat the boss despite you not capturing Henry, the reason this applies to Clockwork Soldiers is because Green and Pink soldiers don’t drop pearls while Blue soldier does, so capturing pink and green or capturing one of them that isn’t blue gives you no portrait, and capturing blue without capturing the others will give you the portrait.

Actually if you fail to catch one of the twins the game will block you from progressing because the chest with the key won't load

It's pretty interesting that only the uncle ghost appears if you go to the storage area without releasing the boos during the blackout
Fun fact: The Sitting Room and Guest Room have unused ghost pools set for them for when the blackout happens. I don't know the names of the ghost types, but the Sitting Room has four of those white fire ghosts and the Guest Room has two banana boys along with two white fire ghosts.
Interesting. I was going to suggest that perhaps it was easier to program it so that every room had a "blackout mode" but then they could have just left those ghost pools empty
For the toy soldiers, you'd only need to capture the blue one because he drops the perils. The portraits rank is based on the one who drops the perils for the twins and soldiers.

If you can get to the corner of that basement room with the King Boo cutscene, wouldn’t that mean that the crash is not being caused by the cutscene trying to play out? Otherwise wouldn’t you trigger the cutscene and therefore crash the game by going into the corner?
He probably glitched out of bounds, in order to bypass the cutscene's hit box.
So here's what I don't get: Why were the boos trapped in that cage in the floor and who did that? E. Gadd? Was it a trap set by King Boo himself? I don't understand it at all

Late comment but on the 3ds port I managed to accidentally despawn Orville during the twins encounter (I have no idea how this happened and I was unable to replicate it), the room was set to clear and I was able to collect Mario's item and defeat Madame Clairvoya, but when I finished area three I did not count twins as being captured.

This reminds me of breaking cutscenes in one of my childhood favourites Nox, by loading into singleplayer maps during multiplayer or using cheats and messing with the NPCs in cutscenes such as preventing them from dying. Usually just softlocked the game but it's fun to experiment how a game handles completely unintended interactions between its own mechanics.

I wonder what happens if you try fighting King Boo *before* Egadd gives you the Poltergust, do you fight Bowser without it or do you not fight at all?
I imagine one of four things will happen (just speculation on my part)
* The game simply crashes
* You have no way to defeat Bowser
* The game gives you the Poltergust during the cutscene
* Same as above except the Poltergust is invisible

I once broke Luigi's Mansion.
I entered the Ball Room like Usual but I decided I should do something else first so I turned around whilst the Shy Guy Ghosts appeared.
The Music kept going tho and after some Time it switched to the Theme of the Portrait Ghost of the Ball Room.
When I re-entered the Room because I was fucking confused there was no Ghosts or Portrait Ghost.

When you play the game in the wrong order. This game has a specific order of events that is supposed to happen but Swanky used cheat codes to do things out of order.
The game was programmed assuming you'd do everything in order, meaning the devs didn't feel the need to make sure the game logic made sense when you do things in the wrong order

Yeah he kinda assumed you've played the game a lot. I'll see if I can explain it
* Luigi goes to the mansion, gets spooked, E. Gadd saves him and gives him the vacuum
* Luigi captures 3 boss ghosts on the 2nd floor, gets a key to the 1st floor
* Luigi goes to the broom closet, hits a secret switch making the room bigger and releasing the Boos
* Luigi catches all the ghosts on 1st floor and goes to the back side of floor 2, gets the ice power up and then goes to floor 3 where the balcony is to fight boolossus
* After defeating boolossus, luigi gets a key to the other door on the balcony, but before he can unlock it, lightning strikes the mansion and the power goes out. Now all the rooms you've beaten are filled with ghosts again and luigi has to find Uncle Grimmly who locked the room in the basement where the circuit breaker is. He's in the wardrobe room trying to practice his scare skills in the mirror
idk but i did not enjoy this video with the turning on and off the power again and again without getting to the point
