Spanish moss caused the first automotive recall

  • When Henry Ford used Spanish moss as a cheap way to fill his Model T seat cushions, he did not expect that this would be the cause of the first automotive recall.

      The first recall, & naturally it was Ford, who else could it be.
      John Dodge once wrote, around 1915/'16 or so.
      "Someday, people who own a Ford, are going to want an Automobile"
      This was funny because the Dodge Brothers owned a substantial shareholding in Ford at the time & received a dividend on every new Ford car sold, plus a profit margin on every new Dodge Brothers car sold.
      Henry was pi$$ed.

    • @KB10GL
      @KB10GL 24 дня назад

      @@chrismehl1607 Well I have no more than a passing interest in anything made in recent times, however I have noticed that the Gen 3 Hemicars still rule the roost, so I'm not too sure about the "forgot how to build cars" bit. It's just sad that these awesome engines have been discontinued in manufacture.
      Three of the most awesome engines in the last seventy years
      1. Chrysler 392 Hemi. [1957/'58]
      2. Dodge /Plymouth 426 Hemi [1964/71]
      3. Dodge Gen 3 Hemi. All of them.
      Ford tried with their 427 SOHC engine, & a brilliant effort it was, & still is, but it didn't quite make the grade when they couldn't afford to put it in a production car that we could buy. [Nascar ruling]
      Chrysler was also well advanced in development of a DOHC Hemi, but discontinued it at the testing phase when Ford faltered at the production car hurdle with their Cammer. The pushrod 426 Hemi was more than good enough.
      I think, overall, that Dodge was holding up fairly well, remembering that Stelantis is steering the ship these days.

    That is only half the story. The real reason Ford wanted the "spanish moss" because he really wanted the wood that the Louisiana used to ship the moss in, that wood was call cypress which is water and rot resistant. Because buying the wood put right was more expensive, but having it used a a shipping container was cheaper.

    • @100GTAGUY
      @100GTAGUY 19 дней назад +1

      Cypress at the time was in high demand for use in naval ships for their decks up until after WW2 before steel decks and non slip surfaces were commonly implemented. Mainly due to its rot resistance.
      My hometown area in south Florida was heavily logged for cypress way back then, spent a lot of time out on the historical logging/tram roads.
