That mustard gas was nasty. My grandfather, a US Marine in WW1 got some of it in his respiratory system, and had medical issues when he came home. He died at 43 because of that gas attack.
Recently discovered your site, very informative, thank you. As a side note I help run a WW2 USAAF Museum in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk and we have a large rectangle and "i" shape painted on the side of the original Control Tower in yellow!. This was the gas paint in case of chemical attack and was able to be seen from most of the tech side of the airfield. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for explaining that. When I restored my DDay jeep I went with the yellowish color based on the historic photographs. I m glad to know I made the right decision!
What mystery juice did you use to turn it red as I take it you don't have a secret bottle of mustard gas to use for the test, and thank you for always bring new topics to inform use jeep nuts keep them coming
I was given a can of vesicant paint by a very generous fellow jeep owner. He had bought it but his wife wouldn't let him put it on the vehicle he took the kids for rides in. Anyways, He gave it to me and I mixed it thoroughly and painted a small sheet of steel as a sample. Once it dried, I took it to be color matched because I also don't trust 1940s chemical reactions. But, suffice to say, mine was the yellow/brown color.
When I was in the RAF in the early 80s we had a patch on our NBC suit that would turn blue if Nerve agent fell on it. Sometimes your guarding role was to stand outside and report in when it turned blue.
Hello Greendot 319! I’ve Been a subscriber for a little while now and I’ve just bought my first jeep (dream vehicle) at 22!😁 Just wondering since I’m relatively new to owning a old vehicle could you do a video on the basic maintenance of a jeep? IE filler levels- engine oil levels- brake levels- water cooling levels so on and so on etc? And quick fixes?? Really would appreciate it! Many thanks! Happy jeepin! Lewis.
The Jeep is the easiest to own for sure. I am in the process of restoring a chevrolet g506. And they are big trucks. The jeep can tuck away in the garage quite easily
Hi I've watching quite a lot of your videos as I'm looking into buying one. What was the first video you did and how did you come about finding and buying one.
I'm guessing the early paint would be visible in black and white photos and film so you may be able to see it in war time films (not movies)? Was this paint used during the Korean and Vietnam wars or later?
BE SURE YOU ARE SUBSCRIED FOR MORE JEEP SECRETS!

Rest in peace 😟
I'm sorry to hear that, I have family who were gassed too. Mustard is very nasty it causes long term DNA damage sadly. Semper Fi.
Bless your granddad. And your grandmother.
My grandfather was in WW1 and died early '45. She lived another 51 years.
So sorry to hear that. They fought and died so we can be free.

Extremely interesting and obviously persuading. Well done, Mate!
Excellent explanation and demonstration, Matt. I really enjoyed seeing the paint actually work. Great job, mate.
Superb, i painted hood by m5 colour on my jeep too. Very interesting
Great information! Thanks for your work on this. I own a 1945 GPW and always appreciate hearing more facts 👍
No problems, I enjoyed making this one and researching it!
Have a '45 Ford too !!!!

Very interesting, good stuff. Not so sure about that ditch in the background, looks a bit radioactive to me!
Awesome video!
the best part of these jeeps is you can leave the key in and people won't be able to steal it because how confusing it is to drive
Love the channel! Do you know of any original unrestored GPA's that around in the UK? It would be awesome if you could do a video on one.
Very good vid.
;)
What did you spray on the paint to test the color change? Surely you don't have a spray bottle of mustard gas vesicant?
Very interesting 👌 cheers
Hi I've watching quite a lot of your videos as I'm looking into buying one.
What was the first video you did and how did you come about finding and buying one.
I appreciate how you sacrificed your fingertips for science!!!
Thats the least I've sacrificed 😅
