This feels like a world where all human life has been absorbed by some screen ai who went on a rampage and when it figured it out it had no audience anymore and the animals weren’t interested in the same things that kept humans entertained, so in a desperate effort it tries to create it’s own audience, which if that was cool enough these visuals are incredible!
I love the colorful animals at 0:31, 1:09 and 2:06, the people walking at 2:27 and that ear thing they did at 3:33. Well, the entire animation is flawless, in my opinion. Every frame by itself is a drawing that you can look at and go "wow that's amazing".
check out riders on the storm(cover) - infected mushroom. It's what I think the animation was originally made for. Anyway, it fits that song perfectly.
According the the video artist THIS is the meaning in his own words: "The album art features a post-human New York City. I kept listening to the song and picturing the music playing out over the decrepit remains of humanity. I could see the animals roaming, not paying any attention, not being able to distinguish the music from any other series of noises. From there I began to feel like our technology would truly miss us. Our forms of entertainment and communication would sit around, dreaming of a day when people would be back to watch and listen."
So if I understand this correctly, the machines became sentient, and when they longed for mankind they started creating clones by doing that unwrapping thing on a lot of animals and then putting them back again as humans?
Dragonstar13 Yes. Of course the SONG has its own "not-as deep," meaning as well. But you would have to be a Blockhead fan and know the "Music Scene," album cover to get it. But maybe you are a Blockhead fan :)
More people need to listen to this whole album, not just this even though it’s a great song. I think The Music Scene(2009) is probably one of the best instrumental hip hop albums of the last few years

I have watched this video high over 6 times, I've done research and I'm ready to state my theory/analysis. The screens appear in a post apocalyptic world. The screens face an empty chair that shows a humans seat print. The screens are then submerged by tentacle like beings. The screens are struck by light and become alive. The screens realized they needed an audience to have a sense of purpose. Therefore, they attempt to create a artificial human being to watch the screen. The screens reach out to hand the human a remote but a deer jumps in front of it and the screens become attracted to the deer. So the screens tear the deer a part and strip it of its spirit. The deer manages to escape but the screens are now attracted to all animals and beings of nature. It now becomes mobile to get the attention of the animals but the animals are not interested. The screen becomes angry and completely takes over nature, merging all beings into one living stream controlled by technology. The screen realizes it still requires humans to watch it, so it presses a button and begins to form individual human beings. The humans are manipulated by the screens and nature begins to be abandoned. The screen now begins to take notice of the other television screens that appear to be lonely. The screen takes control over all technology and becomes even more powerful. The screen has enough power that it decides to create one giant human made up off all beings in nature to watch one large screen. Humans were stripped of their individuality. The screens outnumber the human and become too powerful for the human to survive. The human then breaks apart, freeing all the animals and spirits. The screen now has one last chance to take over nature, so it creates one more human. Except this human is no longer human, this human is the screen. The screen has no audience, therefore it becomes unsustainable and dies. Where you then watch which i believe to be is the end of mankind. At the end of the video we see an elk peering at the scene from a distance. The elk is the last existing animal in the world. I personally believe the elk represents hope that nature will always be there even if humans become extinct.
Tess Christie you put into words, exactly how my brain sees this on the other side. I can feel it in my tingled nerves all over my body. Thank you. Beautiful person. 💜
Zoe Papillon What do you mean about it? I knew those lyrics way long before, that`s why I`ve surprised how perfectly they fit video theme anyways. Go find some new ways to speak to people without getting annoyed, get aducated, son.
I think it's the Media, after being abandoned by humanity, tries to manipulate animals/nature into watching TV, but it seems uninterested, so it tries to attack nature and force it to bend to its will. Media then tries to replicate humanity using nature, but ends up failing due to nature's resistance. Basically, it's Media failing to enslave nature, and that nature triumphs in the end.
Everyone is searching for a meaning, but I think it's actually asking a question. We create things to serve us. When we are gone, what is their purpose?
+Fixie Man I'm pretty sure it's more basic than that, mostly just showing the disconnect from nature, and how people get so content with things that don't matter.
The most life changing thing i ever did tripping was watch the whole Broadway play of American idiot on my TV like the songs and the story hit different
No jokes, I think this is still one of the most formative pieces of music video animation out here on youtube, till this day?? I'm glad I get to watch it again (:
Im in awe Im in fear Its just so beautifully fluid and colorful and has such a meaning that I cant help but feel in my heart. Your artwork really is a reflection of your self because I have never seen something so uniquely incredible before.
So I just put on a random playlist and start gringing my buds. And at the exact moment as I start rolling the joint, I suddenly hear "we call that a joint." Lovely coincidence and lovely music.
first watched this when I was 17 in high school in my friends basement. Now im 27 with a wife and soon kids. Damn youtube recommended making me realize how fast time goes by.
I'm not sure exactly WHAT happened here, but I know it wouldn't have happened if that deer hadnt jumped in front of the chair so. Whatever this is, it's his fault
HIS FAULT?! can't you see fellow... the dear SAVED the man in the chair, And because he saved his live, He was granted the obligation to show his his un for-scene future in which he was saved from.
My interpretation of this is that television and a lot of things we create tend to become our way of finding satisfaction and we push our desire to unhealthy levels. The animals in the video ignore such things like watching t.v. because they are being natural. We keep trying to satisfy ourselves instead of simply existing like the animals.
I watch this all the time when im high, it never fails to show me just how much expression can be captured in art like this - it's a really beautiful piece of art to me :)
MutterBilk Media you are crazy lol xD It takes up to 2 months for a single SIMPLE animator to make a average 1-2 minute film working nonstop. Considering how complicated this one is, it prolly took 2 months per 1 minute. This is just to animate, then you need to color it and compose it...it's really hard work and it would take few months even for a group of animators. When I was working in the studio it took us 2-3 weeks to make 1 minute of stop motion [it was group of 3 people working from 8am to 8pm]
I usually listen and watch the vid/ song as I’m going to sleep at the time in my trip when it’s time to go to be. It’s been a routine for me and I’m glad others enjoy this at least a bit in one way or another
There's definitely a psychedelic influence to the animation. In my opinion, the main message the artist is trying to convey here is that: "investing too much energy and dependency on our own creations and devices will eventually lead us to our own doom. Yet nature always finds a way and prevails, and we must not forget that we are all in this together, for we are all residents of planet Earth, both animals and humans alike". Here's my interpretation of the animation: The orb-like organism with the eye (0:15) represents humanity's presence on Earth, human ingenuity, and synthetic devices in the form of a cyber life form (an Artificial Intelligence, much like Skynet from Terminator) that attempts to eradicate mankind. We'll call this strange organism 'The Eye'. The Eye sets out to observe and learn about the universe and it's surroundings. But in doing so, the Eye unknowingly leaves a path of destruction in it's wake (0:52) - think of it as our carbon footprint if you may, or the depopulation of animals and wildlife due to our overconsumption, etc. Although the animals are exposed to the Eye (or alternatively, the influences and consequences of our presence on the planet), they are content and satisfied with the life they are leading on their own in mother nature; turning away and ignoring the 'TV screen' (if you look closely, the Eye attempts to replicate and imitate the animals on the screen by ridiculing them after observing them - 0:58). Annoyed and angry that the animals are unaffected by the 'TV screen' (1:05), the Eye is determined to learn more about the animals. It achieves this by breaking down the animals into smaller bits and pieces (1:10) and shining the spotlight on them - forcibly abducting the animals from their natural habitat (much like how humans created zoos) in order to obtain all the data it possibly can (1:16). The Eye then processes all of the extracted animal information into a river of data (1:19). The Data River is then re-packaged by the Eye and released back into the Manosphere (1:36) so that humanity may learn about the outside world via television (ironically, the more we learn and progress, the more we box ourselves in with our petty inventions - 1:39). Mesmerised and stimulated by the contents on the screen (1:44), man unknowingly spends more and more time in front of the TV as it is more 'convenient' to learn in the comfort of our own homes rather than out in the real world. It should be noted that the more attention humanity gives to entertainment, the more entertainment humanity will provide for themselves (From 2:08 to 2:21, note how the animals are multi-coloured and seem more lively - the Eye purposely presents all the data it collected from the animals in an alluring, appealing manner so that we are captivated and imprisoned within our own devices). As time progresses, Man becomes more and more sedentary in our decadent and 'superior' lifestyle of TV, the internet, and all the other distractions we've created for ourselves in the 21st century. Even those who initially resisted the temptations of such distractions eventually fall under the pressure and norms of humanity and their peers (2:32 - the humans here tried to turn their backs on the TV, but ultimately still succumb to it at 2:44). The Eye keeps the humans occupied and distracted while progressively placing more and more humans into a repetitive 'trance' of silly and pointless entertainment (2:45). Due to the overexposure of pointless content from the TV screen, Man gradually loses their intellect and creativity and the human race spirals down into stupidity. Simultaneously, the Eye keeps mankind monitored by planting new eyes everywhere (3:00) while humanity remains oblivious to the Eye's intentions. The Eye makes it's move on mankind (3:05); abducting several human beings and disassembling them into data much like it did previously with the animals (3:07) in order to gain a better understanding of the human race. Equipped with enough data, the Eye is finally able to put the whole of humanity under it's spell (3:18) - the orange human being at (3:29) represents humanity as a whole. With humankind distracted, occupied and dumbed down, the Eye is able to swiftly eradicate the human race with little to no resistance (3:34). Although man was eradicated, all the animals that had it's data collected and thus 'consumed' by mankind via television are re-released into the wild (3:37). With humanity wiped off the Earth and enough data collected, the Eye creates a physical vessel (4:04) for itself to assume power. It appears to be successful at first; existing in the shape of a man (4:07) and blinking it's eyes. However, due to the lack of human ingenuity, creativity and emotion that humans thrive in but robots lack, it withers and dies shortly after it's birth (4:19) - leaving behind only a scrap of our existence here on Earth. The deer (an animal known for it's psychedelic tendencies), wise to ignore mankind's devices of distraction and depend on themselves for their own happiness, watches quietly from the distance as mankind destroys itself with our own creations (4:52). The story portrayed in the animation represents the artist's prediction of the near future if humanity continues to wallow in the devices and distractions we've created for ourselves. It also serves as a reminder to humanity that we do not need material objects to be happy/satisfied and that we have much to learn from the animals in this respect. Comment your thoughts below!
Interesting since we can see that happening in realtime now. Going back to nature and living with it is the only way. Having a distanced myself from "society" i feel myself like the deer in the end.
Saw this years ago on the big screen at an animation festival hosted by my university. The bit with the outstretched hand falling through the colors at 3:50 was euphoric to witness on that scale
I didn't remember the name of this video so I LITERALLY googled "music video with lots of colors and a deer and a guy with a tv on its head" and this popped out. I am not dissapointed
this music video is what i think it would look like if you stuck your head into some kind of portal of dark or forbidden knowledge. you're only in it for a moment, but you've seen countless lives go by. it's abstract and indescribable and absolutely horrifying in every way. you wish you could un-see it, but you never can. you feel sick. as an artist, i'm super impressed.
I feel like this video is about you’re trying to find a part of yourself, and when you can’t you fall apart. Leaving that one piece to be alone forever.
I was smoking kush with my old friend back in the day and he randomly put this song on, I still play it from time to time, hope you doing good out there Castro
“You see, I think drugs have done some good things for us. I really do. And if you don't believe drugs have done good things for us, do me a favor. Go home tonight. Take all your albums, all your tapes and all your CDs and burn them. 'Cause you know what, the musicians that made all that great music that's enhanced your lives throughout the years were rrreal fucking high on drugs." -Bill Hicks
I think the story is, blockhead wanted to entertain the animals, they weren't impressed, so it destroyed them and made people to entertain. the other computers notice, blockhead tried to entertain them too, so it made a giant person watching a tv. then it was too much and couldn't support it, so, without thinking clearly, blockhead became power thirsty, and made a giant human that is a tv. it was then too much to support itself so it completely collapsed. the moral is that if you constantly try to get more, you loose everything. that's my opinion.
And it seems that it somehow continued to live as a deer in the end of the video, which for me basically means that sometimes we make so much complex things to a point where we lose ourselves in it, and in the end maybe the greatest joy one can achive lies in the simpliest things in life.
This is my favorite Music video of all time, have probably watched it 100 times over the years. I like to think that the meaning behind it is as deep as the visuals. I can't even imagine the mind of the artist as he created, but its fascinating. I interpret it to mean: Nature came first -> Then Humans, led by the consumer machine, consume for their pleasure and forget all about nature -> Humans fall and/or go extinct, and even after that nature lives on. And I kinda like the end, how the buck is looking at the human creation remains like "WTF"?
The first video I watch when I first ever smoked weed, brings back many memories, I’ve never been as high as I was that day watching this, I wonder if I’ll ever get that high again, different times man, times just keeps going and going weather your ready for it or not, scary
As someone who has taken quite of acid, I actually do get a lysergic vibe from this. Not necessarily the visuals, but the message it delivers. It's like a breakdown and rebuild kinda vibe for me
or you could just enjoy life without being too analytical like most people on acid, just because some dude said something doesn't make it true we all have different perception on reality
I watched this with a friend a long time ago while we were baked and man this gave, a really great experience it was so trippy we loved every single second of it.
After watching numerous AI generated videos and playing around with Microsoft Bing AI image generator for several days I remembered this music video I first saw in the age of 15 and realized that despite it being 13 years old it feels like such a great caricature on how AI generators perceive, process and represent the visuals of our world. AI takes them, processes as just empty visuals without understanding the way they live and interact with the world, turns it all into one uniform mass and then tries to sculpt what you want out of it, it can seem convinsing but it always lacks the feeling of life, it's always empty and sensless. This understanding made this video even greater for me, even though I realize it's not about it.
thats beautiful. i didnt ecen think avout that but i love what you have wrote. i first saw it at around 12, have always had such a fascination of the concept of machines, thjnfs inspired by nature, turning around and perverting the very creatures that inspired its existance into disgusting homogenous products. very muhc a reflection of the way ai thinks.
It's amazing how the song, animation and weed go well together specially the since the song is about weed. It's like the both the song's artist and animator did a perfect job to design the moment that flows perfectly for us. Great job
My best friend Marcus played this when we were coming up on some of the strongest mushrooms I’ve ever eaten and honestly it was one of those experiences you never can tell anyone about bc it was so ethereal. After that we both went down a hole and they took hold of us but 10/10 going to do it again but will keep this video on repeat
I watched this multiple times on multiple drugs, it feels different all the time. Often it seems very critical towards society to me, but I often felt like it’s like a love letter to this feeling you get when you got the ‚flow‘. Yeah I’m high right now, but I hope you get what I’m trying to explain
This video constantly reminds me that even completely scene drawn animation is even more organic than even the cell animation plus painted backgrounds that were common in the 'golden age' of animation.. And no doubt even more time consuming.
On a highly related topic, to anyone unsure about doing psychedelics, I’d highly recommend them, you don’t really need them but if or when the time comes and you’re mentally ready, I’d suggest doing them with close friends, or have atleast one trip sitter that you absolutely trust. And do them safely, as in recommended amounts and in a safe space. And in all seriousness, have a good time
Had a trip playlist on the other night tripping on 1.5g Liberty Cap lemon Tek, remembered hearing this song, and just spent 3 days finding it. Awesome.
this music video and song have always really spoke to me, and have been so powerful to me. i feel like everyone needs to see this, to understand this before it's too late-more than it already is too late. but im sure many wont get it/will refuse to get it/care/etc.
From time to time I go back to this video. I used to love it when I was on high school, thought it was the strangest most intelligent thing I've ever saw. Today I just feel sad it's been so long something touched me in such a way.

Went to see blockhead perform at silk city diner in Philadelphia. Extra chill dude played a tight set. But turns out the dude who did the animation, Anthony Sheppard, didn't even do it in collaboration with blockhead, he just did the animation project on his own accord. I asked Blockhead about it and he said he had no clue it was even made or anything about it for a while but thought it was awesome. Even better is Anthony from Philadelphia or at least lived in Philadelphia at the time. Crazy how an unofficial collab can be pretty much considered official at this point tho.

Amazing

Video is hypnotizing. Sat there for a good 5 minutes video without blinking. Sort of ironic to the meaning of the video.

Now, watch it high

I think it's the Media, after being abandoned by humanity, tries to manipulate animals/nature into watching TV, but it seems uninterested, so it tries to attack nature and force it to bend to its will. Media then tries to replicate humanity using nature, but ends up failing due to nature's resistance.
Basically, it's Media failing to enslave nature, and that nature triumphs in the end.
Everyone is searching for a meaning, but I think it's actually asking a question.
We create things to serve us. When we are gone, what is their purpose?
mind blow

I feel like it is saying we are always being controlled
I love this
+Fixie Man I'm pretty sure it's more basic than that, mostly just showing the disconnect from nature, and how people get so content with things that don't matter.
I first found this while looking for trippy videos to watch while high about 12 years ago. Still one of my favs

The deers was the representation of spiritual life of many of the ancient civilizations

It's supposed to be an anticonsumer message.
My interpretation of this is that television and a lot of things we create tend to become our way of finding satisfaction and we push our desire to unhealthy levels. The animals in the video ignore such things like watching t.v. because they are being natural. We keep trying to satisfy ourselves instead of simply existing like the animals.
btw, the video animation and music are really awesome too!
Nice interpretation but your obvious and typical observation is wrong sadly, the artiste isn't that predictable
I remember first watching this on Off The Air on Adult Swim when I was 10. Saying it blew my mind is an understatement
I watch this all the time when im high, it never fails to show me just how much expression can be captured in art like this - it's a really beautiful piece of art to me :)
I stay up on adult swim just to watch this, i love these videos
I wonder how many hundreds of hours this animation took to make.
we used prooters. Took a day.
Hinarf Narfy What are prooters? Computers?
With a small team of 4 or 5, I'd say it took maybe a few days to a week. Then again, I don't know.
Milk.
MutterBilk Media It's made by ONE animator: Anthony Schepperd and took 5 months to finish.
MutterBilk Media you are crazy lol xD
It takes up to 2 months for a single SIMPLE animator to make a average 1-2 minute film working nonstop.
We call that a joint...
I aint never seen a joint that looked anything like that before..

its the joint between television and humans man thats why it repeats it man
I usually listen and watch the vid/ song as I’m going to sleep at the time in my trip when it’s time to go to be.
Here's my interpretation of the animation:
The orb-like organism with the eye (0:15) represents humanity's presence on Earth, human ingenuity, and synthetic devices in the form of a cyber life form (an Artificial Intelligence, much like Skynet from Terminator) that attempts to eradicate mankind.
Thanks! I put a lot of thought into it while I was stoned and I remember being determined to identify the deeper meaning behind the animation.
Interesting since we can see that happening in realtime now. Going back to nature and living with it is the only way. Having a distanced myself from "society" i feel myself like the deer in the end.

Okay so this is the original song to this video. So glad to finally find it. I’ve seen countless songs being used with this video.
this music video is what i think it would look like if you stuck your head into some kind of portal of dark or forbidden knowledge. you're only in it for a moment, but you've seen countless lives go by. it's abstract and indescribable and absolutely horrifying in every way. you wish you could un-see it, but you never can. you feel sick.

I've been very into animation and music lately and just came across this. One of the best things i've seen. Very inspiring!
I grew up watching this, and now that I make animated music videos this is what I aspire to still!
What software you use for that?
Discovered this almost 10 years ago. Still here listening and continuing to share.
Shelley Lazzaro That's actually exactly what I thought first time around watching this. It's not a bad take on it either!

A.F. Schepperd created the entire animation just under 5 months, only working within Flash.
Same thought when I saw the monkey with the bananas going through its head haha
thats beautiful. i didnt ecen think avout that but i love what you have wrote. i first saw it at around 12, have always had such a fascination of the concept of machines, thjnfs inspired by nature, turning around and perverting the very creatures that inspired its existance into disgusting homogenous products. very muhc a reflection of the way ai thinks.

This is a legendary song and video. Never turned back since Uncle Tony's Coloring Book. Thanks Blockhead.
Crazy how an unofficial collab can be pretty much considered official at this point tho.
socks it is crazy indeed , he’s a genius
