This tub is absolutely ruclips.net/user/postUgkxVoi3B4CB6Oygq1-vo4OTL1M_M5JkrXif . Great quality too. The perfect size for the space in our master bath!
Great job Tim. As a plumbing contractor since ‘94’ I am all for repairing vs replacing. The old is much better made and designed to be repaired when needed. I always flush the lines by turning the main on for a few seconds to clean out the debris that has backed up over the years. I also lubricate the outside threads where the bonnet screws on with silicone grease or Vaseline for easier removal next time it needs to be repaired. I enjoyed watching someone else repair instead of me for a change. Thanks again for your channel Tim.
Can't thank you enough for this video. My valve was leaking through the shower head causing a constant drip. Upon taking the cover plate off a manufacturer's name was nowhere to be found making it darn near impossible to ascertain what rebuild kit to purchase. I'm a retired mechanical engineer so most projects I do myself, but your video showed me what to expect once I disassemble it. I had searched through many videos, but it wasn't until I searched with the key word "ball" that I found yours.
Thank you, thank you for the great how-to on this. My daughter owns a very old house in Buffalo and every plumbing issue there is a new adventure for me. You helped make this one a success so much appreciated sir!
thanks, you saved me hundreds of dollars, one trip to home depot $14.00 for the diverter and 5 bucks for the washer the plumber wanted 60 bucks JUST TO COME OUT
Nice job Tim its been a long while since I messed with the old delta shower valve I just rebuild a old kitchen sink delta just resent, but thanks for the video and stay safe and have a good weekend.
I watched 5 videos before I turned that bonnet nut and none of them had the warning, so of course I bent it. I didn’t break the pipes in the wall thank God, but yep I now have a crooked stem. It was hard to find a video with the ball stem, they are all cartridges today :(. Thanks for making this video, I think yours was #20 that I saw. And glad I finally got the bonnet nut off using CLR soaking it overnight . Cheers
Thanks Tim. Same problem here in the Philippines. I'm happy to get new fittings, but the new model means cutting a nasty hole in my shower room wall. But your video has inspired my Filipino plumber to try and fix the old part, thus sparing the need for a hole in the wall. Thanks a lot.
Great Video!! set of deep well shower/plumbing sockets make that diverter much easier to remove, that bonnet comes off easier if you remove the plastic ring first, Delta provides the tool to remove the ring in some of the rebuild kits or you can use needlenose pliers, I also stretch those springs just slightly before installing, I've seen some really old Delta parts because these are serviceable valves. They don't make them like they used and now I prefer Moen
Awesome video. Only tip I have is to use a seat/stem wrench on that tub diverter. It fit's right on there and will prevent you from having to chip tile or do extra work. Will definitely help save your fingers from that sharp tile too!
Totally convinced me to get a plummer. :) Mine is exactly like that, except with a ton of scale on it. I was able to get about 1/8 turn on it, but could not tell if it was the bonnet nut or something behind it.
The nut for the diverter valve that you had to bust out some tile to use an adjustable wrench for is easy enough to remove. A simple thin wall deep dish socket and a 1/4" impact driver spins them right off. Same tool I use to repair the outside water spigots. No need to destroy anything in the process
Thankyou I did that diverter around a year ago, used a deep socket and extension. Doing the top part know same delta. too old to tackle without your help thanx.
Great Video Tim. Try Aero Kroil penetrating oil in a orange and black spray can. 100 times better than WD 40 or liquid wrench. Then tap valve body lightly with small ball peen hammer to spread the lube thru out valve body. i have taken things apart I never dreamed i could take apart with it. You can buy it at amazon or a good HVAC supply house. DD in Los Angeles
Thank you Tim for posting, mine is the same style and I was stuck when I got to removing the ball assembly, was thinking it was a cartridge..Its not dripping anymore
Today I had the same issue getting the same dome nut part off on the exact same faucet. Finally, I bought a strap wrench and it came right off. I highly recommend it.
Invaluable information! This is my shower hardware and it needed repair. Now it can be done. Any part numbers or do I just look more closely at what you posted?
Great job! I just paid $450 for labor on a water heater install. I personally brought the water heater in for the guy and drained and hauled out the old one. Feeling pretty burned. Never again.
I had a great deal of scale and initially could not remove the retainer ring (the exterior piece with notches). Used an old toothbrush to make multiple applications of vinegar. Waited at least 30 minutes. Using tongue and groove pliers, easily turned the ring for removal.
Great video. I have two of these in an old house I bought and I hate them. They don’t have any real ability to control the temperature accurately. You have to move the knob super super slightly otherwise it’s too much. If I replace the parts like this will it help? Or should I just rip out the entire thing?
What lube to break it down did you soak it in and what grease did you use? What if there is a lot of dry hard water lime ? Can I use a dremmel tool for cutting and socket set for the nut?
When I put a retaining nut back on. I always apply plumbing grease to make it easier to get off the next time. What's your opinion on that? Am I waisting my time doing that?
Awesome video! Question. I have the same old Delta unit that you’re removing. Seems to be working fine. BUT, I’m looking at ways to adjust the Hot water setting. Does the old model Delta have a Hot water setting? Thx
What happened with that spring you pulled out? I didn’t see you replacing it. I have exactly the same problem with my delta bathtub shower no water is coming from the shower head out after I push in the diverted. Do you think is the cartridge that needs replacement? I replace the diverter but the problem persisted. Anyway, great video Tim I learned a lot. Thank you very much.
One of my favorite plumber on RUclips Nothing beats a repair plumber You don't always have to replace... Better to Save the customer money and the pain of watching drywall be cut out Great work, as always
What is the white circular plastic thing the ball arm goes into? I can't find the exact one anywhere and I need that one. Thank you so much for this video!
I have the same exact shower with the ball type and plastic knob. I want to switch to a lever handle. Can it be done or do I need a whole new kit. Thanks
Hey Tim, can you realistically put a plug on the old diverter port in order to put in a different tub nozzle that has a pull plug on it to activate the shower?
did you need to tighten anything for the handle? I saw a video where someone needed to make some adjustments with a strange tool in order to make the handle not wobble. thanks!
You took out the old springs and washers but didnt show replacing with new ones? Just curious if there were any tips to cleaning the small seats or what kind of grease to use.
Hey Tim - I’ve replaced everything just like you did - the leaking bath tub faucet was leaking when in the off position. Now that I’ve replaced all springs and seals including replacing the plastic ball with a stainless steel version - the leak when in the off position is fixed - HOWEVER now water shoots out the new handle when the water is on. 🤦♂️ I’ve cleaned it with a wire brush. Verified the springs went in correctly - verified the seal on the ball assembly is tight and has no debris - what am I missing? Thanks in advance!
A little late I know, but did you ensure the small plastic tit on the cone shaped cover over the stainless ball/stem stayed firmly in the slot to the left side (as your looking at the front) before and during screwing in the outer chrome finish piece. Also did the rubber cup washers seat firmly in the holes, before inserting the stainless ball/stem? I've rebuilt many of these over the years and that's where I've found leaks.
We want to keep the Delta shower valves but update the shower fixtures. OK we found the Delta series 600 tub and shower renovation kit which works if your shower faucet does NOT have a diverter. Unfortunately, our has a diverter but they do not make one with a diverter anymore. The recommendation is to cap off the diverter and change out the tub faucet with one that has a diverter. I would appreciate your expert advice.
Love your videos Tim! On this particular repair, it looks like you didn't adjust the ease of the ball movement. Looks like it takes a little more effort to move the knob left/right and up and down. I have to tweak mine so my wife is able to operate the knob without straining.
I did all of that and half of my water is still coming out of my spigot. When I removed the old diverter valve it looked like it was new but I still changed everything all the bushings Springs everything lubed it up good and half of the water is still coming out of this spicket! Do you have any suggestions on what needs to be changed
Nice job and thanks for posting. Question though, why did you not use a deep well socket to take nut off diverter. Is it that plumbers generally do not carry tools like that. BTW, I am an auto mechanic.
My valve stem doesn't have a hole and the same as what you showed slid off after 2 years. I ordered new knob/handle but don't know how it will stay put. I opened the cover to screw the knob but doesn't stay on and not sure how the old one stayed on either.
Hey Tim I live in a townhouse and we have that same faucet. I have asked maintenence to fix it 3 times in the past 2 yrs can you guide me on how to do it myself?
Your video helped me so much. The issue I am having is that the new assembly does not allow the knob valve to turn toward the hot water :-( . Any suggestions anyone?
I wish you were in my city. I have an almost identical situation-1950 house, Delta lever faucet, and plumber is saying have to cut I to the wall and remove the old tile to replace. Didn't even offer to try and repair. Quote is over $500 to start . The hot water is not staying hot-keep having to turn up and then run out. Replaced the water heater so it must be the valve. The whole bathroom is tiled with original tile so this is going to be a sad mess.
Now I get why my plumber was talking to himself in the shower and was taking his sweet time. Great video and thank you for showing these details.
This tub is absolutely ruclips.net/user/postUgkxVoi3B4CB6Oygq1-vo4OTL1M_M5JkrXif . Great quality too. The perfect size for the space in our master bath!

One thing to note on the two small gaskets inside the valve. The springs go small end in the gaskets and the wider end go toward the valve.
Taking old stuff apart and fixing it is becoming a lost art. Thank you for for sharing your day with us, Tim. Stay safe and stay cool
Thanks for watching Sean. Take care
You’re a lifesaver!
Our house and showers were built in 1982 and don’t have cartridges. I appreciate you showing this and saving me a bundle.

glad I found your channel bc I have this model and it's been impossible getting this bonnet nut off. was starting to think I was crazy
I'm all for "fixing" when possible. Loved the video, I have the same situation, my son will fix it. Thank you for the video. :)

Great advice on how to repair these old beauties!

This was helpful. Thanks dude

Thank you. Replacing my parents tub, 32 year old house. Needed this!!!
Cool cool stuff. Thanks
Nice to know you saved a customer some money but most us plumbers would have just replaced that shower diverter and got a good payday out of it
Thank you! Thank you so much! What should I do to stop water from coming out of the tub spout when I push the converter and the shower comes on?

@@marvellstarks2434 I highly disagree. I did 90% of the work. The guy tightened two fittings and broke one of my existing pipes

Thanks for the video. After I reassemble, water shoots out of where the lever is. No matter what I do same thing. Any suggestions?
Can you list the parts used? I have this same setup. Delta faucet on shower from the mid-80s.

How many springs do you take out in my case two jumó out from that part 🙈
What will make the water deverter not release when you turn water off?
That's a bummer I was really hoping you show the very important part of putting the seats back in correctly
Did you give them the option of putting a new body in like an R10000? Cuz' fixed or not, that thing is still a hot mess.😢
I need to do this today. The bonnet makes me nervous.
