  • Huh, why do new videos feel impossible? Why do I start on them then think 'nah this isn't the one'? I investigate the road I travelled to get here to serve as a warning to the rest of you.

Honestly, your personality is a big part of what we all love watching. The silly, shorter videos feel more candid and less 'sterile', sharing more of your personality with us. I think you would have loads of people willing to watch a live stream or a Just Play series, where you let us be a fly on the wall as you're being yourself and playing games with friends.

What I can say is that your content and style has changed over the years and I'm still here watching, so I'm sure there's at least a core audience who will watch even if you "get it wrong" on your future videos, whatever that would mean.

I think this channel itself is really impressive, You've managed to cultivate such a positive and engaged audience. Other than on the few videos that get far more negative attention than intentioned ( e.g. Quicksand) So many people comment lengthy paragraphs saying nothing but encouraging words - I've done it myself several times. It's really personal for a RUclips thats becoming more sterile and impersonal each year.

Dear Mr. Klik, I have watched every video from you since I started watching your CS:GO vids a number of years ago. One of the things that separates you from other channels is your authentic passion. Sure you might be doing this for a living, but it never feels like you're making videos just to make a quick buck. You always put so much effort and flavor and character and caboosing into your videos, no matter the topic, and it shows. Many times this doesn't translate well for "the algorithm" but it's kept me around for the klik empire and all the video content you create, to see the world from your perspective. I'd rather watch a detailed (even if short) video with personality than a rushed soulless production.

I used to watch philip alot, but it became to wear increasingly thin, especially he started to exagerate his style and humour especially on 3kliksphilip channel.
      It started to be grating.
Especially combined with his blind appraisal of CS2 in lieu of CSGO being virtually replaced and removed.
On top of that many changes CS2 did cannot be undone or tweaked by any setting to have properly same experience with the game.
I tried to watch, but it just started to turn me away.
I think that i just dont see any of it as sincere anymore.
I recently unsubbed from the channels after watching then for many years. Now i finally unsub from this one...

Makes me wonder what working with a small team could do for your workflow, i.e. have people do montage for you, so you can just collect clips, write the script and swoop in for a final edit. Imagine what that extra half a day would give you. Anyways, much love as always, your content has repeatedly helped me get through tough times 🖤

A lot of my favorite videos of yours (other than ones in a series like Game Making Journey or Sleep Disruption gambling, which are some of my all time favorites) are more focused videos on one little topic, either something I never would've expected to find interesting (E.G. Dirt Rally), or something that is very familiar, but something you just don't think about (most of the videos on this channel, for instance 'Attack of the Old Comments', 'The Simpler Things in Life', and like a lot of videos on 3kliksphilip, 'Is 15 Really 15?', etc).
I like a lot of those types of videos, which have a small scope, and aren't about very important things. Also, you can slacken your standards for some videos (not all of them). Love your videos, I'll be watching 'til I can't.

It's my belief that a LOT of people have been experiencing something similar this year. Although I don't wish this on you, it feels good to hear it from someone I admire!
I think I've only commented one other time in the years I've been watching, this video really resonated with me. I think in addition to the points you mentioned there must have been a sort of covid-whiplash in 2023. I worked super hard for months, programming 12 hours a day for my job, and then left because they refused to pay me after. It felt really hard to keep a schedule or be consistent with my projects after that (and since covid too, honestly)! The two things that have been helping is getting the ball rolling with small projects and also meditation.

I feel like a lot of bigger youtubers in that situation start outsourcing their work, often hiring a video editor to help them put out stuff at the same pace they are used to while trying to maintain the new quality standard they and their audience got used to. Obv the issue then is if the new people can maintain the tone of the original author and I guess a lot of times the slight changes need some adjustment time for the audience. I wonder what the finances for these decisions are, I guess most of the youtubers I observed this kind of change for were bigger than the kliksempire rn

Also like every other content creator and viewer will say, make content that is something for you and dont let the view get to you, i dont know if youtube is your main source of income but when making content try to inform because that grabs my attention and makes be want to learn further and watch more videos and go down a 3am rabbit hole (which is what yt wants).

It's always more fun for us to see the personal side of things rather than a long thoughtfully made video that can sometimes feel a bit more sterile. Not saying the longer videos aren't great they just don't HAVE to be watched right that moment. And yet that was one of those videos that just deserved to be made. The thing that I always try to keep in mind is that most of the time, nobody is begging for my next edit to release. I work for a large channel editing as close to daily content as we can possibly get out and the compulsion to hit upload ASAP is something I have to actively fight against. It's a GOOD thing to put more time and effort into a video to make it 10% better because that 10% could be the thing that makes viewers leave or not click. I know it's a rabbit hole of diminishing returns and incredibly frustrating when a video you spent 30 minutes massively outperforms a video you spent weeks on. But as long as it's sustainable, I opt to post when ready vs when "done"

Sugestion for 2:07 - "If only I'd known those particular videos would have been more successful, I'd have spent most of my time making them"
A way between "quick and dirty" videos and "long and polished" that may be used sometimes is to make a self-admitted "demo" video. Particularly for investigative videos (NOT for creative ones).
Like if you were presenting the audience with an idea for a full-length video (whatever full-length would be). What you know about some issue/technology/etc, what you want to learn, how it matters...
This can be bits from all video idea which are fleshed out in a "proper" video, or not. And if the "proper" video is made, it can be as polished as audience's interest was.

You don't have to only release one video from your bigger projects. Splitting up the CS2 input lag video into three parts, (foundation, testing, conclusion for example) wouldn't have been a bad thing. Plus adding onto that series later wouldn't feel out of place if there's maybe an update. Something like how your DLSS, RT, HL:A, Teardown, Control e.t.c videos have all been series as opposed to one big video going over everything.

I think I understand what you're feeling. Almost like it's easy to finish the latter half of a project, but everything leading up to that point everywhere else seems to have slipped away? I've found similar situations in my work occuring, it really makes me feel lost, or like I cant seem to remember how got where I am in the first place. I dont really have any advice for you, sorry, just sympathy. Could be a symptom of burnout...? Take care.

I just wanted to say (and maybe you've heard this before, in fact, more than likely due to the length of time youve been on here) your videos are a godsend for busy work of all kinds, I've listened to half the kliksphilip catalogue at work in my retail job, and the other half while working on my hobbies and such. I could listened to you talk about anything really.
I've got a question, when it comes to user generated topics I've seen a couple "viewers have brought this question up" and "i've been told that", but nothing quite outright in the ballpark of a full-on Q&A or something of that style, what do you think about those?

    • @munchie_gov
      @munchie_gov 10 месяцев назад

@kliksphilip something of the like! to elaborate, I feel like certain youtubers get a LOT of mileage out of viewer submissions (and between this reply and my previous comment, I only just remembered the de_fenestration viewer submitted map contests and vids like that one 😄) and I was wondering about your opinions on a RUclipsr's ability to utilise their viewerbase as a... "resource" (hope that doesn't sound creepy).
For instance, I also enjoy Noel Miller's videos, yet I'd say a majority of his video concepts are solely reliant on viewer submissions and his commentary. And I hope it is fair to say it's quite the opposite of yourself in lots of ways!
hope this doesnt come off as presumptuous or overbearing! thanks for the reply 👍

Maybe the quick, small videos are more successful because they're less important? I've noticed, I really like well thought out documentaries about just about anything. But not any time. These videos require (and deserve) full attention, so I have to "be ready" for them, while a quick little unpolished thing is easily clickable and if I miss half of it because I'm doing something else at the time, what gives? But the point of big important ones is maybe not for getting as many views and as much payout as possible, but they're masterpieces made for the enjoyment of their maker and anyone similarly inclined. Their success can totally be defined by you, as if you didn't publish them at all (though please publish them, I watch all your stuff ^^)

Honestly, I think for the whole view count on shorter less effort videos, it really is just algorithm being an ass. I love your style of content and the higher effort stuff is super awesome and intriguing, but I often don't catch them as quickly, simply because they don't get recommended and I have to manually check your channel. RUclips really is just an unfortunate case of quantity mattering infinitely more over quality on a per channel basis, despite how much content there is on the platform being released at any moment - always struck me as ridiculous that, the prioritization of more on a platform where there is already excess.

I liked your first and second skyrim video the most. all the old content focused on smaller topics were great. 2kliksphilip videos are my favourite. I think the video I stopped enjoying as much was the 3rd or 4th odgrub video, because instead of focusing on the educational side of the plot (such as the enchanting glitches and smithing exploits) you focused more on the stories and characters. I guess the issue is I always like to feel like I'm learning something and being entertained, and some of the videos felt a little less informative maybe? not sure. I also love your personal story videos like talking about walking at night. Super relatable, super interesting, straight to the point. I think if you could merge that style with higher-effort production that satisfies your creative side you could make some truly innovative and fulfilling videos. Just my 2 cents.

Is interesting to hear that, on my job I have to do something that I enjoy, however, it seems like putting extra effort in making something pays off soo bad because I get punished for it, that extra effort is extra time and I cant fulfill my daily quota because of it, so any satisfaction that I could of get is diminished by that punishment, but at the same time I want to put effort in what I do because I enjoy it and I like doing it, and making a half asked half baked product is not something I look forward to, I always get slightly mad whenever I have to push myself to not put effort into something because I'll be punished and get sad because I cant enjoy what I do, sometimes I get specially nasty and say f*ck it and do it as fast and boring as I can just so my boss would be like "uh it looks half baked I need to give him more time" but that'll never happen, he seems to not really care about the cuestionable quality of the product and moves forward, the fact I can get away with soo little it makes my blood run cold.
This video reminded me of that, although you're in a different position so you'll probably have a very different perspective on the matter, as far as I'm concerned I probably misunderstood.
    Good luck Philip.

  • @stevenstevenson9365

I honestly think that youtube is a quantity game rather than quality. I've seen a lot of high quality channel struggle and complain that their high-quality videos get less views than their low effort ones, but unfortunately that's the way it is. I think that there is a high degree of randomness on the platform, and while high quality content sometimes can do well on it's own merits, the randomness is a much larger factor into the success of a video.
When you put out 3 low quality videos and 1 high quality one, you shouldn't be suprised or feel bad when one of the low effort ones does really well. There was a 3/4 chance that a LQ video succeeded, and a 1/4 chance the HQ did. So it's no wonder the LQ ones feel like they do better. I think you should ask yourself (if you haven't already): what is more important? Having your videos do well, or having you videos be as good as possible? If you want them to do well, make more, and don't get upset if one of them outperforms a higher quality video. If you care about quality, focus on quality and don't expect them to do well.
This is very easy to say from my position, as a viewer, without the pressure and expectations you deal with. However, I will say that I love your content for you, your style and sense of humour. I'm sure I'll enjoy anything you put out, but I think that you could do well if you strike a balance between quantity and quality. And I think that balance is probably more towards the quantity side than you might be confortable with. Remember: no matter how good your video is, people will watch it once.
