HOW TO BUILD A BIRD HOUSE woodworking

  • These are couple bird houses I made for gran-kids from a hollow junk of juniper firewood. RUSTIC and birds love them.
    Notice my old antique chainsaw; It's a Frontier and excellent little saw for this stuff, lots of power.
    The object here was to make a birds nesting cover one that anyone could make very easily with minimum tools and to do so at their own safety level...so practice safety all the time!

    Great idea....purple martin enthusiast myself...rain in bird nests commonly causes nestling death if they get chilled......Have you ever thought of calking seam on top and drilling drain holes in plastic in bottom just in case of rain storm? Thank you so much for video

      thanks for watching and comments. Bottom has holes around edge. at 10:32 mentioned a bead of caulking on roof joint. I agree with you 100% box should be dry! Birds have taken a liking to this type of nest box for sure.

    To keep the nest warm and dry put the hole higher. Also the hole smaller. American birds don't like perches near their nest, introduced birds do.Some venting is good, but not on the roof, maybe a piece of plastic at the top and not the bottom.

  • @suzuki981

    You need to make the nestbox deeper. In this way the nest will reach upp to the entrance hole. The landing stick is not necessary it will only make it easier for predators to take the chicks. And please handle the chainsaw with both hands.

    Circle with a square? Hmm. Drive a small nail in the (approximate) center of your workpiece. Take a length of sturdy string, and make a loop in it with a tight knot. One end of loop around the nail, and stretch your string with a pencil and swing around, making a perfect circle. If you want circles of different sizes, simply lengthen or shorten the string. Also, do away with the perch - the birds don't require it, but predators do.

    • @hunt4fish
      @hunt4fish  Год назад

      String trick did it for years and the birds here do use the perch...... .check some of my other videos with chickadees.

    Now that house is just the right price, fellow. Well done, but birds fly up to their nests from below so the perch is in the way a bit. Of course, they can get around it but predators can also perch and dine of baby birds. Don't forget to clean them out every year... a bit of boiling water will do it.

    This isnt going to work for birds as they will have water from rain gather inside of the house from the roof being split like you have it. It would be best to have one single plank of wood on the top. Also, you will want to look at the growth rings and have them face up on the house. As the wood drys, it will cup. Opening up the side where it connects to the top of the structure. Letting water gather inside as well. Its a great Idea but you may want it to last awhile and by doing it this way would extend the life of the structure.

    • @hunt4fish
      @hunt4fish  6 лет назад +1

      Been making those bird houses a long time; water doesn't gather on inside at all. Its very aired out. Birds actually like the little bit of light that shows through the top and bottom. Birds just love them especially the chickadees and swallows in this area. tnx 4 looking and comment

  • @crackerjack3359
    @crackerjack3359 5 лет назад +2

    It would have been better to make one nest from the log. Birds nee about 10 '" below the hole. This stops predators reaching in. Also no perch required by the birds, only by predators.

    • @hunt4fish
      @hunt4fish  5 лет назад

      tnx CJ. Seems they are putting up with the bad living conditions really well here though, every year they nest in them and seem happy. They have their food close by too!

      @crackerjack3359 5 лет назад

      Good to know, and that was my question really. I had planned to turn some of these on my lathe and 10" was too deep for it. I guess the birds in my yard will be slumming it too.

    According to published specifications I have seen, those houses don't look tall enough to be accepted by most hole-nesting birds. They are fussy, and won't take just any hole. I think leaving that log whole an just making one birdhouse would have been a better bet.

    • @hunt4fish
      @hunt4fish  6 лет назад

      Nope, no problems with them! swallows, chickadees especially love them and several other different species have been using them over the years. matter of fact some of them are over 25 yrs old and starting to fall apart. I have these all around my property and cabin and my family and I spend hours watching them doing what birds do. Thank you 4 comment!.

    • @MartinMMeiss-mj6li
      @MartinMMeiss-mj6li 6 лет назад

      Wow, I'm impressed! I've made similar birdhouses, sized according to what the pros say is right for bluebirds on one hand and black-capped chickadees on the other. What I get is mostly starlings enlarging the entry holes. Maybe my problem is where I live, in a city neighborhood. Lots of birds, but nothing like the woods.
      Anyway, good on ya!
      (Oh, and why not make yourself a workbench, or at least throw a board across that wheelbarrow? Gives me the willies, seeing woodworking cutting edges used that close to steel.)

    • @hunt4fish
      @hunt4fish  6 лет назад

      Well, got a bigger workbench if you look at more of my vids sure to see. Sometimes I do that stuff in a barrow or just on the snow just to save the sawdust for other projects in one spot without sweeping other contaminants in an enclosed space. That juniper sawdust is used for medicinal purposes like respiratory problems and works well on asthma. I can vouch 4 that. Chinese are very interested in the cleansing abilities of juniper and some of our local plants as well.

    In this we see the rot in the middle of the wood. Typically this is from a branch that was broken off some years ago. The stub that was left enabled insects or disease to enter the tree, which always makes rot. This is why we speak of the importance of proper pruning. It allows the tree to grow over the wound as quickly as it can, reducing or preventing a rotten heart in the tree. But a stub from a branch will produce this.

      This tree is common here on island and we use it for firewood, we call it juniper. very hard wood and burns well giving off lots of heat to heat our home. I think you are right that branches break off and water, insects etc. enter tree and cause the damage. Makes a nice bird house and they always use them yeear after year.
      tnks for watching and comments, cheers.

    Plastic cup is not good on bottom.coz it will keep wet to puu .

    • @hunt4fish
      @hunt4fish  5 лет назад

      At 15;30 you can see the plastic cup is upside down so it will not hold any water but shed it off. It is only a bottom to support the nest material and water will run out. Thanks for comment and watching my video!

      +Veronica Shea whats the name of his website

    • @hunt4fish
      @hunt4fish  7 лет назад

      I checked it out seems its a bit of a scam
      This was taken from a site on the internet after I googled his name
      Plans Piracy:
      So there you have it. After a full review I have to say hands down that the Ted’s Woodworking Plans is a scam of the worst order and it is highly advised that you steer clear. 90% of what “Ted” claims about “his” product is untrue. It’s as Steve explained, it’s a real “mess” and just basically poor reprints from old Popular Science magazine or some other now defunct wood working periodicals. Much of the projects I looked at were virtually unreadable.
      He’s just copying old stuff out of old publications and calling it his own. This is misleading to be sure, highly unethical and likely illegal.
      What I find impossible to believe is that “Ted” claims he produced these 16,000 projects within a 36 year period. That would mean he cranks out 444 plans per year or 1.22 projects per day…EVERY day, 7 days a week. He’s a machine if he can do that!
      He also claims to have put out books, one titled “The Art of Woodworking” which I can’t find anywhere, even on Amazon.
