Great to see large herbivore restoration work like this being done! Would love to see wood bison, puma and red wolf introductions explored for such remote regions.
glad to see the state of VA giving some of the credit RMEF they do great thing as well as the state great job guys and girls I have already got my lottery application .PS thanks Robin Rhodes
the 1976 VA DGIF hunting rules & regulations had a small elk herd identified around Peaks of Otter … locals harvested them all … in 2007 , hunters could legally harvest elk during deer season on the National Forest the other side of Pound , VA in Wise County !!! … just sayin
Would be nice to see elk populations stretch up and down the entire east coast. I wish elk outside the zone could not be harvested with a deer tag do the population could keep spreading
I think the really cool part about this is u dont need a elk tag to harvest a elk. U can take a elk with a deer tag if ur lucky enough to find a elk out of the ehz. This is cool guys thanks!
Sounds like within the elk management zone they’re awarding 5 elk tags via lottery but outside of those three counties they can be taken with a deer tag. Also sounds like it would be somewhat rare to see them anywhere outside of Buchanan
@@crosshairs3 as the years go on and since the tags are limited they may start migrating/and or expanding to different areas to a population increase cause there only predators are us,bears, coyotes
Does VA have plans to expand elk restoration to other counties in SW VA? Specifically, are there plans for Grayson, Smyth, Tazewell, Bland or Giles Counties? Correct me if these would not be good counties for Elk. I have plans to buy land in those counties and would like to introduce elk on tracts that I purchase.
Chris, The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources has a 10 year elk management plan that goes through 2028. For the tenure of this plan, they do not have any plans to expand outside of the current EMZ. You can read the plan here: dwr.virginia.gov/wp-content/uploads/media/Virginia-Elk-Management-Plan.pdf
I’m so glad that I’m here to witness this opportunity to bring elk back

Just signed up for the lottery! Fingers crossed
Curious how many will apply for the five tags that will be awarded
