    I have alot of shoots on my lawn now and seven large trees, 50 ft tall. Should i focus on large trees with hack and squirt or the small shoots to kill the root system?

    I live in the desert southwest. Trees are hard to grow and are rather sparse. I’ve had a few “Trees of Heaven” growing in my yard with zero problem for over 25 years. I’ve never seen any bugs on them or have I ever smelled anything bad about them. Since we don’t have a lot of vegetation here, except for desert landscape, the Trees of Heaven look like little palm trees growing here in the desert. I’m guessing that these trees are problematic where there is dense growth (?!)…Not sure I get the bad rap about these trees.

    I'm very interested in the basal bark spray method. I wonder if, to save money, you could use Triclopyr Amine (instead of the Esther) with horticultural oil and an emulsifier to mix the two? Think that might work?

    So how tall is the flag pole really? The Biltmore stick gave an estimate of just over 16', but the other method gave 33'.

      I'm sure the Biltmore stick is too low in this case, because I couldn't hold it 25 inches away from the camera. And the other method should be only a rough estimate. I'll try to get down to the park again and do it for real soon.

    We cut down 2 larger trees before we knew that they would respond with root shoots. Now I am battling lots of small shoots and trees. I am cutting and dabbing with success but won during if I am cutting low enough. How close to the ground should I cut the stump? I figured if I do not cut too close, I can monitor regrowth, but if I don't cut low enough, I wonder if is the product as effective. I am using Stop-Out, stump and vine killer and it seems to be killing the stumps I am treating.

    Very informative. It certainly showcases the challenges turkey flocks are facing. Turkey habitat is becoming scarce in our area: development on every corner, noise from traffic and industry, agricultural incineration with insecticides and herbicides of every acre possible. Farmers also are prone to cut fields while the nesting phase is going on. You also have an increase in vermin like raccoon, opossum, skunk, fox, bobcat and coyote. Add to these snakes, crows and roaming domestic cats and you have quite a challenge for turkey poults. We used to see and hear flocks of turkeys frequently about 10-15 years ago. Unfortunately, that is a rare event these days.

      thanks for your comments and for viewing! Yes all points you make are valid. Turkeys are an adaptable bird, but VA has experienced a decline in its Central and Western counties for some time now. Biologists tell us it's due to multiple factors to include: habitat loss, nest predators and predator harassment, lack of habitat diversity (need for brooding areas) and occasional disease.

      I (Adam Downing) also keep a few bees. Anecdotally, I've not experienced any issue. According to the National Pesticide Information Center, "Triclopyr is practically non-toxic to bees." See: npic.orst.edu/factsheets/triclopyrgen.html#:~:text=Triclopyr%20is%20practically%20non%2Dtoxic%20to%20bees. As well, our Virginia Tech Pest Management Guide repeats this and give some practical guidance for protecting honey bees, starting on page 1-31. npic.orst.edu/factsheets/triclopyrgen.html#:~:text=Triclopyr%20is%20practically%20non%2Dtoxic%20to%20bees. Furthermore, I've heard some bee keepers say that honey produced in areas where there is much tree of heaven has an unpleasant flavor, so there is another reason to control the plant, at least the female trees.

  • @larryag99
    @larryag99 2 месяца назад

    Doesn't removing trees for "harvest" do significant damage to the surrounding trees and seedlings by the removal equipment,dragging, unused remnants, etc? In short, what your saying is... humans can do a better job at managing our forests than mother nature. That seems a bit arrogant wouldn't you say? Look around the forest and and its pretty evident that humans have done the greatest damage to the forest AND wildlife overall. Perhaps the best thing humans could do is keep other humans from the forest.

    Good long range plans for timber growth. Those were similar to my plans but instead of letting my pines grow another 10 to 15 years for good sawtimber I had them clear cut. This was due to trees starting to die from ipps beetle infestations. I was afraid in another few years I would loose most of my mature stand. I'm in South Alabama. Good luck with your plans.

      Great observation! They are using a tool known as a diameter tape. Diameter tapes are specially calibrated to allow us to physically measure circumference of a standing tree - while reading off a value of diameter. The tape makes the conversion of C/π = 2r (diameter) so we don't need to do that extra step in the office. For more information: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diameter_tape

    how is Triclopyr ester dangerous to the garden surrounding the tree to which it will be applied? Eva

    • @virginiaforestlandowneredu309
      @virginiaforestlandowneredu309 2 месяца назад

      Triclopyr products need to be carefully applied, according to the label. One of the items on the label refers to not applying if the air temperature is above a certain amount. The reason for this is volatilization which could drift in the air and cause damage to other unintended targets.
