Maybe I'm just weird but I actually prefer the sound of the original pickups. The Creamery ones make it sound more like a strat. I just picked up a 2002 CIJ 66-85 Jag yesterday (with the original grooved bridge) and though it has its quirks (for sure the pickups are pretty noisy due to both being standard wind/polarity) but there isn't anything about the actual sound I would want to change - at least not right now. Couldn't put it down yesterday afternoon when I brought it home.
I like the bottom end on the creamery, but that's about it. They sound pretty similar otherwise. Could be because of an overwind too, the neck doesn't sound much different at all, the bridge, especially. Like the new bridge sounded the same as stock, just more output. I am looking for more of that with mine, I think. I just got a '97 CIJ. I love it but feel like the pups are missing something.
Great video. Well presented and played. I know the MIJ pickups are microphonic but I much prefer the sound of them on every level. I just bought a Fender Vintera 60s Jag a few days ago, new. I've also bought the Staytem bridge and trem arm, and a Fender moulded case (it only came with a crappy gig bag). From the factory some elements of the guitar are worse than a sub £200, no name, internet jobby. The nut is sharp as hell on the ends and looks like they forgot to do anything to it other than glue it in, totally unfinished. The fret ends are also sharp as razors and poorly finished. The neck, near where it bolts on, seems to have a mild kink on one side, although the frets are level all the way up. The set up from the factory was consequently nonexistent. I realised this in the shop but I see it as a work in progress, I love the Jag sound and feel of the neck (minus the kink of course). I'm taking it to my local luthier next week to correct the issues/do the work and set it up, but 'all in' it'll cost around £1400 including the initial purchase, case and parts (more if I do end up getting a whole new neck). I think Fender need to pull their finger out on this model. For the money you'd have to be a Jag lover to want this. There isn't any reason you couldn't get a masterpiece of a guitar these days for a grand and a half. Anyway, great video and channel. Hope to see it grow and succeed.
Great vid. Over the years I’ve made almost exactly the same mods to my 2003 CIJ. It’s got creamery Alt88s, staytrem bridge and trem collet. The tonal difference from the mustang bridge I had before was amazing. I’ve even got an ac15 too. With gear taste this similar you sir have a new subscriber.
Hi Jonny. Another great vid. I just put Creamery 64s into one of my 2 Japanese Jags and love them. The other one, a 94 , I wanted to keep as original as possible. Allan at Catswhisker pickups rewound and wax potted those pickups for me and they are equally as amazing. Very well priced and returned within a week!
Does the weight both you when sitting and playing...mine tends to dig into me leg and have to keep moving it around. Its pretty hesvy..or maybe Im just weak
Creamery pickups are way more mid-rangey. You lose that Fender-y top-end sparkle. Clearly a much hotter wound pickup. Totally just a matter of taste which you prefer.
Disagree when you use ALT88 treble in the bridge..fantastic pickup when you want versatility to run through dynamics in a song if you want surf cleans and modern garage rock fuzz
you might have said something about it ,, but have you thought about a new wiring harness? 920D is the company i like. in my opinion / experience with upgrading my jag , new wires and pots reaaally brought everything else together 😬 thanks for posting! cool guitar ✌️✌️
Damn that neck pickup is killer! I'm going to have Q Pickups wind a set of Alnico II pickups for one of my Jaguars. And do the Staytrem bridge replacement, too. How is your stock Fender tremolo working for you?
Definitely prefer the original pickups by quite a margin.
Well executed demo!
Also refreshing to hear a demo with a tuned and intonated guitar 😊

For clean tones, I love the Creamery pickup in the neck position, and the MIJ pickup in the bridge position.
yea same thoughts here. except across the board, not just cleans.

I'd have loved to hear a rhythm circuit tone comparison.
Wow, Jonny! I recently sold my '64 Jaguar and those creamery pickups sound almost exactly like my old Jag. Good score!
I did the same exact thing with my bridge and have no problems anymore. 2001 USA Jaguar Inca Silver

Which alnico are your pickups? 2 or 5, please? Thank you....
I like the original for the first locks you played. But when you ran through the second chorded jam, I preferred the creamery.

Yo la Tengo! I love that song
