    Could you by 50m of 4x1 treated timber or decking boards that you could lay down where you erect your fencing. You could either cut the to the length in between the stakes or you could lay them out where your next rotation will be, then by the time you move in two weeks the grass will of died back and be flat.

      Now, that is a BRILLIANT idea! I think laying out in advance would work well and it's something that could probably be salvaged for next to nothing.

    I set up an electric fencing system from VOSS earlier this year, abolutely love it! Got the Sirius 8 energiser from VOSS with the solar panel and we run electric around the entire farm and hook up multiple poultry nets. I bought the battery from a different website though as it was half the price. It also took me a while to get my head around it but once you have it sorted it makes life seriously easy! I should have a detailed video up about it in a couple of weeks.

    Excellent video Geoff I’m terrible when it comes to instructions so I always have to search for a RUclips video .

    I would put some black tape over the lights on the energiser so at night it’s not like a lighthouse telling thieves where it is 👍🏼

    I got my fence a year ago for my 23 hens. I was apprehensive to begin with but definitely one of my best buys. A year on and no problems with foxes and happy hens. I use a gate and don't bother turning off the charge when I open it. I can't ever remember getting zapped whilst opening the gate. Keeping the grass down is an issue. In the Summer I simply pull the whole fence out (takes 10 minutes) and mow the fenced area with a petrol mower every 2-3 weeks. It works fine. Not sure what damage a strimmer may do to it. If you are moving it every two weeks just mark out your new pen area and mow it before you pin the fence down.
    Do watch out for absolute shorts. If for example a braid of the green live wire gets trapped at the bottom of a pole around the spike it simply zeroes out the whole system. So if you have it on and the charger is ticking but there is no voltage shown on the fence meter, carefully go round each pole and check that the green wire is above ground and not touching an earthed surface. Have fun!

      Great advice, thanks Paul. I dont know why I didn't think about marking out the fenced area and mowing FIRST before moving the fence. Doh! I shall try that. :)

    You are definitely not a 'duffer'.

    A lil bit of Arthur Ransome swallows n amazons spirit from me to you. Am on Suffolk too... Got some Ixworths pullets if you're interested 🐾

    Could you consider a solar powered set up, with a battery backup? Or is that just too expensive/impractical for the British climate?

    • @BrimwoodFarm
      @BrimwoodFarm  4 года назад

      No, totally - i want to go solar. We get enough sun to power it and eventually I'd love to solar the entire system but it was too expensive to buy for the start up.

      @@BrimwoodFarm Solar works fine between april and october. November - march you'll need way more panels or top up the battery via the grid about once a month (simpler). Buying the solar panel + charge controler from a campersupplier was way cheaper than buying a package from a fence charger supplier. And the whole system has way more oempf too.
      Biggest handicaps are not enough ground (dry soil for instance) and rust on connectors. Stick your energizer inside, they do better dry and with some weather protection, ditto for the battery (they really hate cold, expect a 2-3 year life expectance out of them)

    I needed an electric fence to protect my bees from a resident black bear. I was super intimidated, by ultimately surprised by how easy it was.

      Yeah, it doesn't take long to get to grips. Though I'm thankful we dont have bears over here!!!
