We used to have double deck, open top buses in New York City, back in the 1950's. There was a terrible accident when one drove under an elevated rail line, so the city banned them. I think the ban has been lifted, though. I can remember riding on the top deck as a kid. Loads of fun. I don't know who made them, though. Maybe White, Mack, or ACF Brill.
I remember these were running on the 53 route fully laden getting up Blackheath Hill. RMs are the best of British, grew up with them, love them and miss them. The throaty roar of the AEC or Leylands were so much a part of the London scene with RTs and RFs of course.
I love that engine sound, brought back so many memories. When I lived in London I frequently travelled on Routemasters. The only other bus with a really iconic engine noise is the LT RTW's - brilliant.
Great memories . My parents had a caravan in those parts , and I've spent many a weekend in the late seventies /early eighties driving around those roads . Been in Oz for 35 years , so this was wonderful to follow . The whole Routemaster series is marvellous . Well done lads !
I remember a school trip to the "eisteddfod" at Llangollen, we had a clapped out 41 seat Duple bodied Bedford coach which by the time we reached the top of the Horseshoe was literally gasping for breath!! Unlike this lovely vehicle! 20 mph in third gear! Marvellous!
The familiar surroundings of an RM cab. A nice place to be on a nice day. AEC engine sounding nice, you can pick up the slightly gruffer note of the 690.
Great video and what a great bus. Horse Shoe pass, no problem. I've seen modern HGVs struggle up here. Brilliant mate. I love the soundtrack of the engine. Will definitely do this tour in 2021.👍

Hi Dave, what a small world it is, I was heading down to Llangollen from the horse show pass on 1st September 2019 and was delighted to see an open top Routemaster heading up the hill in the opposite direction. Such a joyful site which I made sure I included the footage in the Moto log video I made of the ride. Roll the clock on 3 years, and whilst browsing my way through RUclips I happen upon your channel and start watching my way through your videos with the penny suddenly dropping that it was your bus I had passed that day😁 I am absolutely blown away by your videos and the superb editing quality and story telling you do around the restorations. Your attention to detail and incredible skills set you and the guys display in restoring these beautiful machines is exceptional, an absolute pleasure to behold! Excellent video I really enjoyed listening to the noise of the Engine throughout the video. When you purchased the bus was it already a open topper or did you have to convert it?
Brilliant....clearly driven by someone who has a love for the vehicle and the skill to do it properly !! ( as a retired instructor on RML's and other LT vehicles I can say that ;-). But when did they get that nicely upholstered driver seat... I only remember the sweat making leather cloth ones !!
Thank you Adrian. Glad to get a seal of approval from a former LT instructor. Yes the seat was reupholstered by a previous owner, it’s probably the most comfortable in the fleet albeit totally unoriginal.
I love the sound of that engine. It's iconic. I also love the distinctive upholstery fabrics. What lovely buses they are! It must be a real handfull to drive those large buses on the narrow Welsh roads. I don't know how you got through some of those gaps between parked cars. Llangollen has certainly changed a lot since I was there 45 years ago.

Hi Bill, yes RM's did have full auto when new, however RM1783's auto was removed by a previous owner so we have to drive this bus semi-automatic. Not sure why it was removed but assume the auto selector drive from the gearbox was faulty and as parts for these are no longer available it was removed.
I prefer it semi auto. Adelaide in Australia had rear engine AEC Swifts with 760 engines (enlarged version of this bus engine) hooked to ZF 2 speed autos. They had to be heard to be believed.

the open top bus those were the days coming down stairs with twigs stuck in your hair and butterflies and wasps stuck to your teeth and shivering from the wind chill
looks like you are changing gear as per a semi-automatic gearbox. this is wrong for a route master as it has a pre select gear box. you select the gear then press the third pedal which changes the gear and release the third pedal this engages the selected gear. /my can now select the next gear you think you will need
I think you are confusing the RT which had a pre-select with the RM, admittedly this one had been slightly modified according to a reply earlier in the thread, and had to be driven as a "Semi auto". The RM as built for LT service had a 4 speed auto/ semi auto box.
Gleaming beautiful buses in the collection, have you my favourite the RT class please?, they were my loves in the late 50’s up to the late 70’s, can you get a 1962 RMC in original condition for the collection please?.

Hi Lee. This bus was converted to open-top at Aldenham, so is one of only a few original London Transport open-tops still on the road.

I've loved the Routemasters since Dad took us to London in 1978. They are the best buses ever built. ❤❤❤

looks like you are changing gear as per a semi-automatic gearbox. this is wrong for a route master as it has a pre select gear box. you select the gear then press the third pedal which changes the gear
and release the third pedal this engages the selected gear. /my can now select the next gear you think you will need
I think you are confusing the RT which had a pre-select with the RM, admittedly this one had been slightly modified according to a reply earlier in the thread, and had to be driven as a "Semi auto". The RM as built for LT service had a 4 speed auto/ semi auto box.
Gleaming beautiful buses in the collection, have you my favourite the RT class please?, they were my loves in the late 50’s up to the late 70’s, can you get a 1962 RMC in original condition for the collection please?.

@@Routemaster4Hire Looking forward to the RT restoration, loved those buses in the early 1960’s at Brentwood in Essex, we had them on Country Area 339’s, Central Area 247’s and 287’s and (Green Line 721’s, at Aldgate, would see Trolleybuses).
