  • In-room demo of Linkwitz LXmini and Phoenix[alt] open-baffle subwoofer combo, playing Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit track , streaming by AmazonMusic HD over Asus wireless MESH to laptop HDMI out to NAD C658 (no Dirac) XLR outputs to a pair of Hypex FA-123 plate-amps (mounted in the subs) that DSP and power the speakers and subs. Video captured on Samsung Note9. Sound captured with a pair of Rode M3 (mics) connected to Focusrite Scarlet 4i4 USB connected to the laptop running MusicMaker (free). Video (audio stripped) and mic audio joined, tiltes and fades added with ClipChamp (free). I used NAD C658 so I could patch video to the TV screen (to show it was actually playing), HDMI limits the audio input of the stereo system to 24bit/48kHz.

I said this in a recent reply, but those aren't always read, so I'll re-state and elaborate here... A few weekends ago I purchased a pair of (what many consider reference) Golden Ear Triton One. If not familiar, find more about Triton One online. I listened to these for a week+ to adjust (position in the room) and settle-in (my ears/brain). Then I used BluOS (grouping) to A-B against LXmini+ Phoenix(alt) OB-subs. The difference is astounding, the sound from LXmini is so much better, open, alive, engaging. Whomever is considering LXmini, know that (for me at least) they outperform the likes of Tekton Double-Impact (w/factory upgrade), Martin Logan e-stats, and now GoldenEar Triton One. I'm beginning to think LX521.4 may be the only acceptable upgrade from LXmini.

Do you ever "feel" the pipe resonance around 600hz? I know the tube is stuffed.
Really great idea that you combine the dipole/cardioid to SL's first dipole sub!!

I haven't felt the pipe while playing 600Hz tone, nor have I noticed the pipe resonating - hasn't drawn attention to itself for me to consider the possibillty. I'll admit that the pipes on mine might be over-stuffed a bit - not intentionally, but because I was intent on not having any stuffing left over (to be a mess elsewhere). I've actually contemplated going back in to validate/correct this along with replacing the internal speaker wires (which are still very low quality lamp-cord). My intention was to quickly build a set to see if they were worth the time investment of my original plan (completely 3D-printed). Fortunately/unfortunately, I was so impressed that I went ahead and painted them, then built the subs with integrated Hypex FA123 plate amps (to power everything), and never looked back. I've compared these to many speakers in my listening room over the years (listed these before), and just last week, aquired a perfect set of Golden Ear Triton One. The Triton One (for those who don't know) is a brilliant Sandy Gross full-range speaker 14Hz - 35kHz, 92db with AMT-tweeter in D'Appolito arrangement, 1600watt built-in (adjustable) subs in passive-radiator design (combines benefits of sealed & ported) - a reference speaker for many. These are intended to replace the mains in my HT system, but first to the 2-ch room for some critical listening pitted against LXmini+Phoenix(alt) OB-subs. The Tritons sound awesome (as expected) and similar to the Tekton Double-Impact (w/factory upgrade) that I'd pitted against the LXmini setup previously. As good as the 'Ones' sound, they (same as Tekton and others) don't have the 'magic' holographic emotional being-on-the-stage sound. Yes, the Tritons play deeper and with more bass impact/pressure - as they should with 1600watts dedicated to bass. The closest sound comparisson to LXmini was with Martin Logan electrostat panels (hybrid, with traditional ported bass drivers) - e-stats is where I began this journey. Problem with the e-stats (and what is successfully solved with LXmini) is e-stat's very narrow sweet-spot - they sound amazing if your head is locked in a vice (despite their curved panel). Of all the speakers I've A-B'd against LXmini, the only one's I've kept are; Elac (a bargain for the garage), Triton 3+ (HT), and now Triton One (headed to HT replacing 3+). All that said, I do highly recommend Tekton DI, any of the amplified Tritons (no experience with the others), Elac's are great value too, B&W if you have high-frequency hearing loss, Maggies or ML if you don't mind using a head vice, Buchardts are ok, SVS Ultra's are ok (used or SVS outlet value?), ML Motion-series are ok (but bright), DefTech (also too bright for me). One of the biggest benefits of LXmini is you control the crossover and eq with DSP to your liking - the advantage of this cannot be overestimated. Let's face it... without the ability to change the sound, you're trusting the speaker mfg to build something that happens to work well in your room, playing your music, at the volume you like. And I say, the chances of that are nill - leaving you to settle for how they sound and maybe waste time and money searching cables that will make it better - that's rediculous. With DSP you control how each driver responds to the input signal.

Man, this is the exact same speaker configuration that I'm planning to build. Do you have experimented listening with only 1 OBsub instead of 2 ?

Not much experience listening with one Phoenix(alt) OB-sub; however, two of them is an overabundance of bass. I'm only using the 125w of FA-123, so if only one, then more power might be necessary. I'm using the Peerless XLS drivers recommended by Siegfried, and they are capable of handling more than the 125w I have available. One should be fine. BTW, you can build two from one 4x8 sheet of MDF. I can share the cut sheet if you need.

@@mw4609 Not familiar with that sub version, is it a isobaric arrangement? WHy did you not go with his W frame that is the LX521 and LX-Mini upgrade version? The sound is nice and clean on YT btw.

@@sjhorton1184 The Phoenix sub is open-baffle dipole, same concept as LX521.4 subs (not isobaric). What is not shown in the video still-image is the backside of the subs - are open at each sub. This cabinet design is called "W", where common open-baffle subs are, "H", "V", "W", etc. Open-baffle can be made in many ways, the important aspects are; unrestricted air movement to both sides of the driver(s), distance (air must travel) between those openings, and driver specs. I chose these instead of LX521.4 subs because drivers are much less expensive, less board to buy, easier to build, design is free, and they are better suited to LXmini - which has lower output (power handling) than 521. They are overkill for LXmini - and I like that balance. Better to have abundant bass and adjust the gain down, than be 'working' the bass drivers. Even at very high 90 dB, the sub drivers are barely moving - very little cone extention. This is the key to accurate bass, because cone recovery (from extention to neutral) produces inaccuracy (distortion). That's why you find high-end systems having 6 REL subs... so they move a bunch of air without any of them extending significantly, and to balance room response. Room response isn't much of an issue with OB-subs, because they don't pressurize the the room (at all). They will not thump your chest, rattle the walls, shake the floor or vibrate other items in the room (or adjacent rooms). They are all about accurate distortion-free sound quality. For home-theater, one might want chest-pounding bass - for these purposes, look elsewhere (I recommend sealed for chest-pounding with some accuracy). To my ears, ported usually sounds muddy and unnatural, especially at the port tuned frequency. Sealed enclosures must be very well braced, and designed to avoid backwave effect on the rear of the cone... so many issues with non-OBsubs. I think once a critical listener hears good open-baffle, there is no going back - makes eveything else sound broken.

I'll look into those suggestions. But first, maybe a little explanation is in order so expectations can be aligned.
I'm not selling anything on this RUclips channel - this is purely for the love of music and to showcase what can be achieved within a small budget - call it love of a good value. I selected music based on my preference (what I like to hear), and especially artists that people might have missed. Looking through the few videos I've uploaded, certainly most audio/music hobbyist have heard Jason Isbell, take a listen to ruclips.net/video/ZxwE9oiZfmM/видео.html for familiar vocals. Meanwhile, I'll see about your suggestions and thank you for commenting!
