Thank you for elevating my story. Seeing people continuing to work with a brand that blatantly screwed me over - then promised to leave me on PR and then almost immediately after saying that took me off, rubs me the wrong way. Those PR boxes had moldy old product in them- i know they did because I got an eye infection using it lol- just generally bad. And I’ve been hearing Anastasia is racist, and noticed her body language toward black/brown at the Halloween party in 2019 which is why I opted not to interact with her.

Not gonna lie, I think Norvina is exaggerating how her mother ONLY was in charge of brows and that she was the creative genius behind everything. I don’t doubt that she was involved in the company or that she focused on Instagram, but seeing how unprofessional and obnoxious she is I highly doubt the brand would’ve continued building its reputable status if she was as in charge as she claims. I mean even when ABH was close to its peak during when the subculture palette came out she was super shady implying influencers simply didn’t know how to apply makeup or were digging their brushes into the palette, that’s about a year after she took over I think so I really doubt she was making so many decisions earlier than that since right out the gate she was being a brat and only was able to coast on the success and reputation of the brand that her mother had built up plus so many other scandals and dramas occurring around the same time.

This is so important and honestly now I’m hoping Hannah takes this concept and makes a video listing and exposing all the brands that represent these things we all clearly do not support so we can stop putting money in their pockets which directly goes to electing officials who we do not want in power! I’m seriously so grateful and appreciative that she’s going out of her way to bring this to people’s attention and that she makes it such an important part of her platform to advocate for supporting the right people with your time attention and buying decisions

I did not enjoy the ranting at end of the video. You are making a lot of assumptions. We may never know the reason why those Right-wing accounts (i don't really know what to call them) were followed, but to make unfunded allegations that they finance Republicans, is really...unbalanced, weird and just very inflammatory. I thought this was an "Evolution of the brand" video, not "What kind of person is the brand owner" video...

@@rachelthomasrusso When you say “unfunded” you mean “unfounded,” correct? Those are not considered allegations, those are observations of her social media account highlighting the individuals Anastasia follows. And she hasn’t unfollowed these individuals since this observation was addressed publicly so the “allegations” are actually true. As was mentioned in the video, when a brand owner/creator includes their name in the brand name you can’t dissociate the brand from the person, they are marketed together. The behavior of the company, the reviews left by former and current employees on Glassdoor are enough for me to not support this brand going forward. Besides, the beauty market is oversaturated at the moment and I would rather try out products from brands that aren’t this controversial. If you choose to support ABH that’s your choice.

What annoys me the most is that part of Anastasia's story is that she lived in and fled Romania when it was under communist rule, her husband was seeking asylum in the US, she and Norvina followed him which later down the road helped Anastasia to be an entrepreneur. My parents are from Romania and experienced what it was like, granted they were born 10ish years before the revolution. Anastasia was there right at the beginning of when that all started. She should know the best how many Ukrainians feel and what they are going through but here she is laughing about pro-putin content. I am done spending my money on ABH's products.

And she does it right as if you were this much worried when Syria or Artsakh were destroyed and depopulated within the last 5-6 years. Each comment on those war crimes were commented as "toxic" or "racistic" against turkey or azerbaijan. Now when politics and paid media spread anti-russian propaganda, all became empathetic suddenly. Empathy cannot be selective. You either are or not. Your previous silence lets me assume that this selective empathy is fake, especially to a country that sold phosphorous weapons to azerbaijan to use against Artsakh people and soldiers.

Right wing authoritarians are the most fervent anti-communists out there, and sadly a lot of people who’ve escaped communism fall for their spiel, and go on their way to support authoritarian wannabes like Trump or outright fascists like Putin.
The issue with communism is *authoritarianism*, and the latter is also present in the right side of the political spectrum. Supporting fascism to counter communism is like trying to put out a fire with gasoline.

I generally tend to think when a brand gets offered through Boxycharm, it may be an indication their sales aren't the best. Like I love Boxy, I've been subscribed nearly 2 years now. But I'm very much aware it's basically a TJ Maxx/Marshalls mail service. Sure one could make the argument it's a strategic business move, and I have zero evidence to argue otherwise. But my gut says sales are starting to slump.

I learned to contour and highlight way before it was mainstream because I worked in a drag bar in the 1980s! (Most of my makeup skills were taught to me by some of the most beautiful queens! (Angel and Rachel L’Amour you taught me well!!!) At the time, we used cool toned eyeshadows to contour and shimmer shades or light opaque mattes to highlight. I also learned how eyebrow shaping could change your eye shape and even your face shape from drag makeup! When I first heard of Anastasia and her brow technique from Vogue magazine , I was immediately intrigued! I bought one of her brow kits the minute they launched at Nordstrom and never looked back! Then when she launched her contour kit, I was in Heaven! It was so much better than using eyeshadow which could be hit or miss depending on the quality of the shadows. My first eyeshadow palette from them was the Makeup by Mario collab. It has been pretty cool to have been able to watch the invention of the internet and how it advanced so much just in my lifetime! (I am 57 years old). I love these evolution of series!!!!!
Edit: I had no idea about Anastasia’s ideology, I haven’t been into makeup for a minute and didn’t keep up on the brand. Definitely not supporting after hearing this!

God i hope they don’t do anything controversial because they are the only one I still give money to😭. But thank you for this video. I could totally be wrong, but I remember warm tones actually being VERY popular at the time and when I heard about the ABH pallet I wasn’t that excited at first. I wasn’t sure how they would make a warm toned pallet that was exciting with so many of them flooding the market at the time. I believe the shades that made the pallet so popular were actually the pink/berry shades in the pallet. Most of the ones we had seen at that point were just oranges and warm browns. Those berry shades mixed in with the oranges and browns is what set it apart from others and made it so popular.

I love makeup and the business side of it and after studying I can watch these and apply business terms and think about what I learned in all my classes. But it also feels like my girlfriend is chatting with me about it💓

    Another kudos from Ukraine ❤️
Once again, amazing storytelling, I'm just so into your way of arguing, somehow it's very soothing =)
    Thanks you a lot

Before this video I always kind of assumed ABH fell off because they were a staple of like the 2014-16 brow which is so different from brow trends today which are a lot more in the Glossier style

me too, I've never bought from them because of the price with shipping to my country would just be wild, so I've not kept up with them and just assumed the same. So much else going on that I didn't know about!

I remember when I was working at Macy's in 2006 Nordstrom made such a big deal out of the ABH brow products that I actually went over there on my break to check it out. They were lauding this brand as being so insanely wonderful and I was so unimpressed lol. But it was before anyone, even Benefit, really had any brow products. Benefit afterwards started doing brow products but before that they were really known for just their skin and eyeshadow products.
Edit: I remember RawBeautyKristi struggled really hard to make Subculture work. She tried so hard to make it work including following what ABH said in order to use the palette.

When watching How I Met Your Mother episode on a glass being shattered I never would have thought that I would be referring to it so often. Also I just need ONE thing from ABH and afterwards they can release 1000 of Norvina palettes - MAKE SULTRY PERMANENT. Mine had some weird thing growing so I threw it out but I miss it at least 2 a month - Cider was such a great shade... in general, the whole palette was perfect.

Thank you so much for talking about this topic, especially the bit at the end. I would have had no idea this was going on if you hadn't shared! I think I'll be taking my business elsewhere thank you very much! Love you Hannah, wonderful and well- researched video, like usual ❤

Remember when the ABH Twitter tried to say that you should use a warm-toned foundation to look less oily or something stupid like that? Good times.
