So many of the Subculture reviews exaggerated the kick up and hitting pan. I remember people putting their brushes in and swirling them around in ways that people traditionally don't put their brushes into pans. Not going to name any names but there were some big RUclipsrs doing that too.
I agree. I recently went back to a popular beauty youtuber to watch an old born to run palette tutorial. I followed it and the youtuber was complaining how much kick up she was getting and how horrible it was. She was going in so heavy-handed it was ridiculous. I got almost no kick back from my palette using a lighter hand.
i agree. it was baffling to me as a 13-14 year old watching these beauty content creators complain about "fallout" on everything with the way they were swirling their fluffy brushes in the product vigourously and excessively.
it used to make me kinda angry to see them brutalizing that palette - I loved it and had to save up for it - I would oh so gently lay my brush sideways on it just lightly pressing and remember thinking how wonderful it was to get so much color with so little effort - sure wish I still had that one, would love to play with it today
Anastasia did not invent the Golden Ratio. During the Renaissance, artists and architects used the golden ratio formula for aesthetically pleasing creations. Centuries later, scientists used the golden ratio and other calculations to determine what makes people attractive. I was taught how to apply it to eyebrows and makeup in general 53 years ago. She probably learned about it at about the same time I did. (She and I were born in the same year.) The source for me was an MUA who had trained under Ben Nye. He used it for movie stars during the Golden Age. So, it’s been a theory for a very long time. I will give her credit for popularizing it and building an empire based on it.
Yeah that was strange...I learned about the golden ratio in college while taking art and math classes. Nothing about Anastasia was ever mentioned because it was invented way before. She's giving the brand too much credit.
I’m romanian and I find it soo cute the way you pronounce Anastasia’s last name. Soare means sun in romanian🌞 I just wanted to let you know you have people watching you from Romania too 😍
You could say that the downfall of the brand really started when Norvina took over. I think this part was kinda missed in this video. It wasn’t just the new investors, but also the intense need of Norvina to change the brand into an expensive colorful brand, which its loyal customers were not happy about. It went from a very sleek and elegant brand to a “childish” colorful brand. It was a 180 change. No one was ready for it and sales plummeted, not only because the esthetics were different, but also launches were continuously happening (which was mentioned in this video). I remember clearly because 6 Norvina palettes came out in 6 weeks, which was unheard of for most brands. Not even colourpop was launching weekly back then as they do now. I was a fan of the brand and used to buy almost everything they launched and at that point I was like “hell no, I can’t buy these MANY clown palettes”, lol. Afterwards, the heat was too much against the brand, and against Norvina for being a shady influencer, so they disappeared for over a year. The brand already did their “come back” a few months ago, going back to their roots, but this time they have been super behind with trends and haven’t been able to get the attention they used to get. Norvina is still behind the brand but this time Anastasia is back to be in charge so it’s a bit better by keeping the old elegant esthetics, but they haven’t catch up or haven’t hit the mark yet with anything they have launched. They even tried to repeat the success with the Amrezy highlighter, by launching a new shade, but unfortunately the new product was more glittery and not up to the preferences of the actual market. They also launched a mini glam palette, one of their biggest sellers, but everyone already had the original palette so that didn’t go as well. Same with the foundation and other products. Everything has been so-so and in this overly saturated market, things are not really working out that well. Hopefully in the future they can catch up. Hopefully.
Yes! This is my impression as well, Norvina taking over and totally trying to change things up with her mediocre Vol.# palettes. The quality was different ( NOT good) and the releases were overwhelming. Lately I’ve heard about them being problematic with Instagram posts supporting putan or something ….I don’t follow ABH any longer so donno ..
Clown pallets ?? You sound like you’re fun at parties lol. You are obviously not a true fan of ABH because then you would know it’s not possible they dropped 6 Norvina pallets in 6 weeks because the volume 6 just dropped not long ago and it’s been sold out several times already on NORVINAS site !!!! Which brings me to notice You also failed to notice Norvina has her own website dedicated to her sub group of ABH products !!! Boring old ABH didn’t change they simply expanded their audience and you old boring farts didn’t like it. 😂That’s ok because they gained new followers like myself who own 4 of the 6 Norvina pallets. 😊 If you had any real talent at makeup you wouldn’t be afraid to implement colors other then brown.
Bright colorful makeup is not "clown" or "childish"... You can write a critique without being offensive. Also, the word is aesthetics not esthetics....
I love everything about this video! You look crazy beautiful (love the eyeshadow look) and the deep dive is so thorough. Great job, Kelly, I really enjoyed watching it!
I’d love to see Urban Decay! It’s one of the few brands that people not into makeup know well but kind of fell off. For other brands that used to be popular (Too Faced, Tarte…) it makes sense why they are no longer popular but I always wonder where Urban Decay went
I’m someone in the ABH has fallen off camp. My issue isn’t with the actual products, which in my opinion have maintained quality since the Amrezy highlighter launch. Though I will say going from small seasonal collections to constant releases seemed like a bad move. The issues I have is the messy business practices. When Norvina started taking control and really becoming the face of the brand it seemed like she was more interested in playing influencer than brand exec. There wasn’t enough separation which made the brand’s marketing feel unprofessional at best. Their treatment of donidarkowitz will never sit well with me. I still have my ABH products but I haven’t purchased anything in like 3 years and wouldn’t recommend the brand. Edit: grammar
I’m definitely one of those type of clients who gets tired of a brand launching and launching products, the best example of that: Colourpop, it was just too overwhelming
Love this idea for a series! Ideas for other brands - Smashbox, Marc Jacobs (are they still in business? What’s the scoop?),, Hourglass (still popular but definitely on the decline), Makeup Forever.
I love these dives into brands, please keep this up. As someone who has always loved makeup but never watched beauty content till the last couple years, I missed a lot of the background on these brands and enjoy learning about it.
Love this series! I'm still deeply in love with ABH ! I still use and love my subculture palette.. alongside a few others by the brand ... their brow pomade is like 21 dollars and lasts at least a year and the color match is fantastic! Loved hearing the whole story behind the brand ...
I really love my subculture palette! They reformulated it so that there was way less kick up and that was the version of the palette I got. It’s one of my go to palettes for fall 😊
I grabbed mine at Marshall's or TJMAXX and I think the quality is great! It really is a unique and different color story and I'm so glad that I got the chance to snag it!
I loved the timeline you shared. I remember the Kardashians used to see Anastasia for their brows. Subculture was a hype palette for a lot of channels. I still have it and I love it, even if it's a little tricky to use.
YASSSS!! This content is interesting, impactful and yet respectful to the brand(s) you’ve chosen to spotlight. Thank you for the research and I would LOVE to see more like this! ♥️♥️
Kelly... Kel👏🏽LY👏🏽 You aced this video! So well researched, clearly delivered information but it still feels like you not a news segment and the pictures are really helpful for me too. You're hard work isn't going unappreciated - thank you so much💞☺💞
I agree with everything you said, but they actually had a really good 2021 releasing their cream blush, bronzer and highlighters and also their concealer all of which are excellent. I think those products, while not as sexy as eyeshadow, are a move in the right direction. I also enjoyed their newest palette - Primrose. The color story might not be innovative, but the quality was outstanding. Most recently came lipsticks and lip pencils. I haven't tried them yet, but I'll bet they are good quality too. BTW, Hannah from Smokey Glow also does these deep dives into the history of brands.
I got into beauty RUclips in early 2017 and Modern Renaissance was still being spoken about everywhere. It was the 1st highend palette I lusted after. I didn't end up getting it until way later and I was kinda disappointed tbh.
I had forgotten that ABH was all about brows first. When I think of the brand now I think eyeshadow palettes more than anything else. And all those launches one after the other... I think brands do that when they are doing well and they think their consumers will buy just anything and everything they come out with, but that turns out to be overwhelming to most people.
Great video! I think this type of content is so important, and i have been a big fan of Smokey Glow and her similar series. As a person trying to be a thoughtful and conscious consumer, i appreciate information beyond formula and price details; i want to make sure that the brand is one that i feel good about supporting. I hope that you do more of these...maybe PUR, Zoeva, and Cover FX? These brands seem to be pretty popular, but they aren't often the subject of videos like this. 😎
I think many people love to hate on ABH and especially Norvina. But they do have solid products and had good launches in 2021. I hope they continue to do well in the future and come our with good products in 2022
It’s so weird to hear this history and I think “Wow, I lived through that” like it was fifty years ago and not 5…I remember getting Modern Renaissance on its first relaunch after it sold out initially, on the “email me when in stock” list and I was so excited. The first day it arrived I sat down in front of my mirror and thought “I have no idea what to do with these COLORS.” My favorite palette is Club Nebula now.
This video was really interesting! I only got invested in the beauty space in the last couple of years, so this felt like learning a bit of lore lol. Would love to see an abh rebranded video!
I love these videos!! Smashbox would be a good one I think. Ive always liked the brand but (especially with the new Becca thing….) they need a definite reboot.
I agree about single shadows. I think we’ll see some reallyyyyyyy pigmented single shadows in a different way, kind of like P Louise pigments (love that brand) also I’m loving this video series, you go girl!!!
I still love the palettes, I own almost all of them and 2 pro palettes. I’ve only starting wearing eyeshadow 2 years ago and quickly wanted all their palettes. Loved this video keep them coming 😘
These videos are SO interesting to me, and definitely nostalgic as I really got into the makeup world in 2015-2016 when the makeup/beauty world seemed more popular than ever. Would love to see more videos like this based on some of the brands mentioned in the comments like Tarte & Urban Decay. This would be a great series on your channel to revisit the history & timeline of popular brands! Great job Kelly 😇💕
Im trying to be more adventurous with my makeup choices this year and I’m always inspired by the looks you wear in your videos. You make colorful eyeshadow look so effortless! 💚
I, for one, always love this kind of content. I think all could be saved as far as ABH goes if they would just do the Mario palette again. Clean slate....just saying. ☺️
I remember when I was so excited for the Amrezy highlighter when it came out since everyone was raving about it. None of their launches after that have interested me as much(besides the brow freeze).
Thanks for sharing its been interesting to learn more ABH I have a handful of ABH pallettes I haven't been into them yet. I want to find them we are in the middle of a move so I can try them out they have been packed up. I need to find them and play in them im so behind and that's OK thanks for sharing Kelly 💞
I absolutely love your make up!!! It looks amazing 🤩🤩🤩💃💃 I would like to watch your video with advices how to make this perfect look 🥰🥰🥰 or you already made it can't wait to see it😇😇😇
Kelly, your deep dives are GOLDEN. I only joined the beauty community is 2018, so for the longest time I was like, "What's the deal with ABH?" because there were such strong opinions about it. I hadn't realized I was entering right at the turning of the tides. haha. Even though I've gleaned a lot of it over the years, it was so nice to have this rundown all in one place. haha. Definitely want a re-branding vid on them. And I thought I left this comment on the Stila one, but now I don't see it: I'd be SO interested in your thoughts on the marketing campaigns for these imaginary rebrands, too, since I think that marketing plays such a huge role in our desiring of the things. haha. THANKS!
Anyone else hoping they release a version two for the subculture or prism palettes? I think those colour schemes would do so much better in today’s market
Great informative video as usual, I love when you deep dive into Brands history, background... and would definitely love to see a video on Anastasia like you did with Stila.
So interesting! I would love to see this kind of video on so many other brands (of course Urban Decay comes to mind, but i think it would be interesting for most brands). Your eyelook is so pretty btw! I love the combination with this warm, earthy color in your top - I would never have thought to combine those, but it really works great.
To me, what this info means is ABH did fine when the cosmetics industry was smaller, they thrived in that market. But when it exploded and there were brands everywhere and constant new releases, they never figured out how to keep up or stand out. Very interesting!
I always seem to go back to Anastasia brow products. They have a great range of colors. She really started so many brow products we never knew we needed.😊 I’d love to see a video on the downfall I’d MAC. Quite a story.
100% agree with you.I would love to see ABH comas back like the old good days.I don't buy their products like before but I do love last pallette even I don't like big pallettes Norvina pro Vol 5 is beautiful colors. Its really surprised me a lot how much I love it.
This was so interesting! I recently picked up Subculture!! Theyve been carrying it at Marshall’s lately! I really like it! I recently acquired Mod Ren too!! I had no idea about ABH’a history, so interesting! Thank you for such a unique video! I am loving these types of videos! 💖💖💖
Fantastic story about Anastasia BH. This is why I subscribe. I bought that Renaissance palette and notice it irritates my eyes. Am I the only one that has this problem? Thanks for the information, Kelly.
I remember finding that her family name was Soare (sun in romanian) and then finding out that her home town is the same as mine. I was amaized and happy. Love this kind of videos and I think ABH needs a bit of rebranding. I love the cream bronzer and in 2021 they had some great products, but still the brand is not that popular as it was in 2017-2020.
Awwh! You missed mentioning the Lavish Palette & the OG Amrezy palette that was gorgeous & their catwalk palette!!! Maya Mia and another influencer palette I forgot her name but I remember it started with a T
So many of the Subculture reviews exaggerated the kick up and hitting pan. I remember people putting their brushes in and swirling them around in ways that people traditionally don't put their brushes into pans. Not going to name any names but there were some big RUclipsrs doing that too.

Tati ☕ because she wasn't on ABH's PR list.
it used to make me kinda angry to see them brutalizing that palette - I loved it and had to save up for it - I would oh so gently lay my brush sideways on it just lightly pressing and remember thinking how wonderful it was to get so much color with so little effort - sure wish I still had that one, would love to play with it today
I'm really enjoying this videos! Tarte would be a great one, both for the history and a rebrand.
Tarte! Yes!

Thanks for sharing this information. This is something I didn’t know about makeup history!
Cool history!
Agreed. I was taught eyebrow shaping when I went to modeling school in the 80s.
Golden ratio dates back to ancient Greece - it was used in geometry by Euclid, and later in algebra. .......and even later during the Renaissance era.
Yeah that was strange...I learned about the golden ratio in college while taking art and math classes. Nothing about Anastasia was ever mentioned because it was invented way before. She's giving the brand too much credit.
Colourpop would be a fun one to do - this was super interesting and kind of a walk down memory lane!
I have their first 5 palettes still.
I’m romanian and I find it soo cute the way you pronounce Anastasia’s last name. Soare means sun in romanian🌞 I just wanted to let you know you have people watching you from Romania too 😍
Buna Seara! American here, but we lived in Bucharest off and on for 10 years, and I really miss it!

Have you read the reviews of ABH as an employer made by ex-employees on glassdoor? Yikes.
whaaaaaaaaat?
Not only that, but Anastasia is pro-Putin & pro alt-right. Not a good look for the brand.
I’m definitely one of those type of clients who gets tired of a brand launching and launching products, the best example of that: Colourpop, it was just too overwhelming
Same here. I appreciate brands with fewer new launches. I find them to have more staple quality products.
The problem with ABH is not that their releases seem outdated.
The problem is the company's culture and exploitative practices.
what do you mean? :(
Love this idea for a series! Ideas for other brands - Smashbox, Marc Jacobs (are they still in business? What’s the scoop?),, Hourglass (still popular but definitely on the decline), Makeup Forever.
Can I just say your hair looks AMAZING like wow
Yes! Do Urban Decay next! Also yes, would love to see your make over of ABH and all these brands.
These deep dive videos are the best!! I learn so much…thank you for doing these Kelly!!❤️

Great video Kelly, I was surprised you didn’t mention their highlighters and glow kits, they started the bling highlighter trend.
I loved the timeline you shared. I remember the Kardashians used to see Anastasia for their brows. Subculture was a hype palette for a lot of channels. I still have it and I love it, even if it's a little tricky to use.

You aced this video! So well researched, clearly delivered information but it still feels like you not a news segment and the pictures are really helpful for me too. You're hard work isn't going unappreciated - thank you so much💞☺💞
I love these types of videos. I’d like to know more about MAC. They’ve been around a while but I never knew how they came to be.
I got into beauty RUclips in early 2017 and Modern Renaissance was still being spoken about everywhere. It was the 1st highend palette I lusted after. I didn't end up getting it until way later and I was kinda disappointed tbh.
Same for me, year and all! It was the first high end item I thought I really needed. It’s a great palette, but I don’t reach for it often.

Thank you, Katherine!
I got my eyebrows done by THE Anastasia when I was 15 years old. One of my favorite memories!
I would LOVE to see one on melt cosmetics.... especially how they went from selling from there website exclusively to now being in sephora
I think many people love to hate on ABH and especially Norvina. But they do have solid products and had good launches in 2021. I hope they continue to do well in the future and come our with good products in 2022
I think this is one of my favorite eye looks you've done! The shadow and mascara are incredible!

I love these videos!! Smashbox would be a good one I think. Ive always liked the brand but (especially with the new Becca thing….) they need a definite reboot.

Love this series. I hope in the future you do for two brands us ladies in the 40’s grew up with: Revlon and Max Factor.
the nouveau palette is one of my all time favorites of any brand.
I absolutely loved the Subculture palette when it launched and I still love it today.
Amazing video! 😍 Loved listening to it. I would love a video like this for Essence/ Catrice as well
Brows are the most difficult aspects of makeup to master. At least for me. Interesting video
I agree about single shadows. I think we’ll see some reallyyyyyyy pigmented single shadows in a different way, kind of like P Louise pigments (love that brand) also I’m loving this video series, you go girl!!!
Honestly please continue this series!! Love your videos Kelly!
I feel like the Naked palette is what made the palettes super popular.
Imo Norvina did do a lot to help the brand but she also was a huge contributing factor of their more negative public opinion.
I agree
Holy cow Kelly…I love this eye look! Esp w/ your hair color. Also love this topic & style of video. More please 😊
I still love the palettes, I own almost all of them and 2 pro palettes. I’ve only starting wearing eyeshadow 2 years ago and quickly wanted all their palettes. Loved this video keep them coming 😘

I absolutely love this!! I would like to see one on Lorac (or one of your rebranding for them)
I absolutely love your make up!!!
This video was amazing and beyond interesting. You have incredible talent, Kelly.
She really started so many brow products we never knew we needed.😊
I’d love to see a video on the downfall I’d MAC. Quite a story.
I would love to see a video in this series based around Too Faced!
100% agree with you.I would love to see ABH comas back like the old good days.I don't buy their products like before but I do love last pallette even I don't like big pallettes Norvina pro Vol 5 is beautiful colors. Its really surprised me a lot how much I love it.
This video is so interesting - thank you for doing the research! I can’t stop staring at your eyeshadow though, it’s so beautiful 😍
I would love to see a deep dive about Urban Decay. 😀
This was so interesting! I recently picked up Subculture!! Theyve been carrying it at Marshall’s lately! I really like it! I recently acquired Mod Ren too!! I had no idea about ABH’a history, so interesting! Thank you for such a unique video! I am loving these types of videos! 💖💖💖
I’d love to see one of these about hard candy.. I remember when it was sold next to urban decay in ulta
Love this style of video. I'd love to see a deep dive into what you consider to be the most revolutionary or significant makeup products.
I LOVED this video! More industry deep dives and more like this! Keep them coming! Ps. You look beautiful in green eyeshadow 😍
Fantastic story about Anastasia BH. This is why I subscribe. I bought that Renaissance palette and notice it irritates my eyes. Am I the only one that has this problem? Thanks for the information, Kelly.
I still have PTSD from “The List” it was one of the most discouraging things ever. I was creating content SPECIFICALLY for that damn list 😂😂
This was very interesting and I would love to watch more videos like this one! Thank you Kelly!🙂
I absolutely love this series Kelly 💜
Loved the Stila video - it was brilliant! Yes please more:) ABH and maybe Smashbox?
Happy weekend 💕
I love these types of videos!! Please do more ❤️
These are so interesting, would definitely be interested in you doing other brands!
I love this as a series! Definitely would love to see one on morphe
