It’s so true. Learning to work with the gray scales, shadows, shading, lighting, etc helps you to learn how to use color. I worked with gray scale for years before I used color.
I actually hated working with colors for the longest time. Just recently I have decided to force myself to get over it and start working with color. Your videos and other people's videos have really been a blessing . I'm glad to have found you.

I was too scared to use color as im not the best. But i just did an artwork with color and ut turned out really well! I do love greyscale though!! Its easier especially as a beginner

I remember when I was very young, my uncle gave me some very cheap brown paper, just stacks and stacks of it. I only had a pencil and eraser but I was able to use the brown tone as a mid tone and when I used the eraser quite hard I could create a highlight! When I showed my Gran some of my drawings she gave me a watercolor tablet and a 10 color set of watercolor paints! So at 10 I fell in love with the watercolor painting medium and have painted ever since. I have still enjoyed drawing and watching the videos on RUclips are a complete joy! Your instruction is so inspirational and quite wonderful, I enjoy watching your videos immensely, thank you for sharing your art. Please take care and be safe out there!

I'm 33 years old and I've been drawing my whole life but really only drawing and inking. I'm now diving into color and omg I feel SO strange feeling like a beginner artist (which I am with color!) and I feel so overwhelmed by color. Every single color choice and why and how to use it etc etc. So glad I found your videos!
Well explained. Hard to do but so worth following that advise. As I think a person can learn faster if they start out in grey scale then colour. I didnt’t have that great info when I started but see the value in it.
Thank you kirsty. I was very much disappointed with my first colour pencil drawing. I need to work on my values and I had been trying to improve my values while drawing in colour. I will start focusing on my values with Grayscale from now on.
Love this lesson... I am a beginner artist I may go back to using Grey scale after this... Usually when I do Grey scale I have like five different values black, dark grey, grey, medium grey and light grey and white I don't have nowhere near the shades represented on your art
Starting simple benefits a lot. I started with the same pen I was taking notes for school. Just wireframes, figure out the basics. After a while, I introduced the pencil to bring more life to the sketches. Then I started *_gradually_* introducing color: Add small hints of blue red and green to make small areas of the drawing pop using pens of the respective color. Pens are more predictable than pencils so they are a good place to start. Only after that I introduced colored pencils to my drawings. This type of progression has worked for me, I never felt confused or overwhelmed by colors
Because of you I started my youtube channel. It's quite small. I need to grow both as an artist and youtuber. But really, I have to say I have found this confidence from you and you only. Thanks Kirsty ❤️😘
I'm so thankful I have just found this channel. Your artwork is incredible and you explain things so well that I can understand what you mean. Thank you Kirsty 😁
I already switched to a small Set of Colored Pencil because like you said it was just too much choices for me. I still have the big box but I decided to save it for later when I feel a bit more confident. I still try to find “my right thing” but I was able to narrow it down to Pencil, colored pencil and Ballpoint pen. Pure or combinations. A little bit of Marker sometimes for a foundation. I did some try some own little sketches past month but my main thing is coloring books so far. Think I gonna step back a little further and try a coloring page in pencil. I have a Tattoo Coloring book where it could look really dope to give that grayscale a go I think
yes it all makes sense whenever I try to draw something with colours it just takes me an hour or so to decide what colours To use and what not and also why and after spending hours I come to an end where I am even confused and waste all the time I had to draw and in all this process I never even thought about proportions, shading , sketch, foundation all of the most important stuff I think all you said was so practical thnx for this 🤗

I am 14yrs old and have been doing pencil sketching since I was 8 or 9. I feel it is easier after learning the pencil shading technique. I started it a week back and have progressed a lot
I spent the first 20+years only doing graphite because I was afraid of color. Then I jumped right in the deep end and went for it. I find looking back at my old work really shows my progress. Now I can practically blend my colors effortlessly
Exactly what I needed to hear. I'm struggling with color drawing I'm going back to black pencil drawing and mastering it first And I'm using "Derwent " color pencils
Hi KP A really valuable video! Had I just gotten this understanding and watched that video many years ago, then I would have started in the right place. I am a person who LOVES colors and that is my motivation for drawing / painting, but one of the most important disciplines in the picture world is precisely "tone value" which I have overlooked for years and have not really understood, but have learned through the time. I still have a lot to learn in terms of values and this video reminds me that it's central to making a picture look realistic!
The more I look into things the more I realize I need to go back to fundamentals. As a self taught artist I am trying to improve and this video helped give me direction. Thank you
It's quite interesting. As a child in our Arts classes I was among the only ones comfortable with graphite drawing and long, most of my drawings/pieces were only black and white ones (Indian ink or graphite). The teachers had to force me to use color 😂 I'm terrible with paint and brushes in general... I'm currently trying my hand with markers (water-based ones, as the alcohol ones are still a mystery to me). I've been doodling and coloring in the past weeks, and decided to go back to drawing. Of course I invested in color pencils, but this video makes me indeed think I should go back to my black and white, or limited colored drawings first. Thanks 😊
This video makes a great point. I drew exclusively in graphite for 15 years (off and on) before I started doing colored pencil. Now for nearly 2 years, I've only drawn in colored pencil, and love it. If I didn't have those 15 years of experience in just graphite, there's so much I never would have grasped. Not saying everyone should do exclusively black and white for 15 years like I did, that was just my preference and I didn't take my art seriously. But doing just one or two colors for a while is important. It helps you understand the fundamentals before you get into more complexities like color.
I am comfortable drawing with pencils but I am not confident using colours. 😬 I just downloaded your colour guide. Thank you so much! I couldn't find detailed guides that are free.
In my art class, a lot of people try and just do gray scale, and our teacher doesn't like it. She actually prefers and/or makes it a requirement for us to color all of our art
Even if you're focusing on values, don't neglect colors. Buy a cheap watercolor set. I'd recommend a Winsor & Newton Cotman set and practice/play with colors and color mixing. When you move to color in your work, it will be a piece of cake. Understand color theory by understanding split primaries (warm/cool versions of primaries) and the interaction of color mixing. With a little practice, you'll see a color and say that's a cool blue mixed with green or that's a burn sienna mixed with lemon yellow.
Will you please compare the Black Widow colored pencils to the Prismacolor!? Love your channel, you are a true teacher. I feel like my art has improved so much since watching you. 😊
So do I have to practise greyscale for months or a year before I use colour or what level of experience do I need to acquire before jumping into colour ?
the teachers did this with my art classes as a kid, we were marked down for using colour until we understood how to create light and dark tones with graphite or charcoal
