Absolute dancing master to my friends back then. Matter of who was cooler to us, David Ruffin or Major Lance! To me, toss-up to this day.

On this day in 1965 {June 2nd} Major Lance performed "Ain't It A Shame" on the ABC-TV program 'Shindig!'...
At the time the song was in its first week on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #93; the following two weeks it was at #91 and then it fell off the chart...
It reached #20 on Billboard's R&B Singles chart...
Between 1963 and 1975 he had nineteen records make the R&B Singles chart; four made the Top 10 with one reaching #1*, "Um, Um, Um, Um, Um, Um" for two weeks on January 26th, 1964...
He just missed having a second #1 record when "Monkey Time" peaked at #2 in 1963...
His other two Top 10 records were "The Matador" {#4 in 1964} and "Rhythm" {#3, also in 1964}...
    * "Um, Um, Um, Um, Um, Um" was actually #1 on Cashbox's R&B Singles chart, Billboard did not have an R&B Singles chart from November 30, 1963 to January 23, 1965...

Middle of the song they cut away for sillohetts(sic) of white girls dancing instead of showing the master at his craft. Also did this on Cannibal and the Headhunters video.

Major Lance, one of his best songs, but he stole the footwork from the Godfather of Soul, James Brown.
