Gene Chandler was born on July 6, 1937 in Chicago, Illinois. He is a Grammy Hall of Fame inductee and a recipient of the Rhythm and Blues Foundation's Pioneer Award. Today, July 6, 2022, he is celebrating his 85th birthday.
If you grew up in Chicago, you no doubt heard this classic and others on Herb Kent's Saturday morning wake up show. Thanks Gene for lifetime of soul. RIP Herb.
R. KELLEY? ARE YOU ON DOPE? This is the one and only GENE CHANDLER, THE WOMAN HANDLER! R. Kelly could not flush his toilet! And Curtis Mayfield wrote the the majority of his hits! Saw him at the Howard Theater in '65, '66, and '67! HE IS ONE HELL OF AN ENTERTAINER!
Artists like Gene Chandler made me SO proud to be from Chicago. SOUTH SIDE STAND UP!! Much respect to the legendary "Duke Of Englewood" Eugene "Gene Chandler" Dixon or "Mr. Chand" as he called himself on his own record label! Hahaha!!
Have not hear this one in a long time. I also saw Gene Chandler in person in 1964 and 1965. He was so cool and a great performer. In his era there were so many great soul singers but he is memorable, especially from my years in Chicago.
I have always like this song.Gene Chandler has a wonderful voice, other favorite songs just be true.God bless our love,I fooled you this time, groovy situation, what now,and of course Duke of Earl. These songs are timeless,at last to me.God Bless you,Mr. Gene Chandler
On this day in 1965 {April 10th} Gene Chandler performed "Nothing Can Stop Me" on the ABC-TV Saturday-afternoon program, 'American Bandstand'... The following week "Nothing Can Stop Me" would enter Billboard's Top chart at position #96, nine weeks later it would peak at #18 {for 1 week} and it spent twelve weeks on the Top 100... And on June 6th, 1965 "Nothing Can Stop Me" peaked at #3 {for 2 weeks} on Billboard Hot Soul Singles chart, for the two weeks it was at #3, the #2 record was "Yes, I'm Ready" by Barbara Lewis and at #1 was "I Can't Help Myself" by the Four Tops... Between 1961 and 1979 the Chicago native twenty seven records make Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; with one reaching the Top 10, but that was a big one, "Duke of Earl" peaked at #1 {for 3 weeks} on February 11th, 1962. He next highest charted record was "Groovy Situation" in 1970, it peaked at #12... And on Billboard's Hot Soul Singles chart he had thirty four Top 100 hits; seven made the Top 10 with one reaching #1*, "Duke of Earl" Gene Chandler, born Eugene Drake Dixon, will celebrate his 82nd birthday in three months on July 6th, 2019.. * He just missed having a second #1 record on the Hot Soul Singles chart when his "Rainbow '65" peaked at #2 {for 1 week} in 1966, the week it was at #2, the #1 record for that week was "I Got You (I Feel Good)" by James Brown ...
This song takes me back to the sixties, riding the train from, Racine, Wisconsin, going to see our teenage cousins, who lived in Chicago, Ill. 58th ( or 68th and Morgan)?? .My sister's and I were, 9, 10, 11.Our cousins were in their teens( first cousins)We would go to the corner store, order bags of french fries, Nehi Pops.We would then sit on the porch, along with our other ( first cousin, Eunice) and listen to this song and many others, on the radio. Such Priceless Memories, to a Classic song✨✨Rest in Peace,😪😪😪 Kim ( Our Sister) Sharon and Shirley ( Our First Cousins)☝☝🙏🙏Gone but Never.....................forgotten✨✨✨8/ 11/ 2018
One of Gene Chandler's often overlooked songs is a real 'gem' that was a regional hit in the midwest in 1962, 'When You Left Me." The Chicago stations played it all the time and it was huge and it is one of the most memorable songs from my youth in Chicago that brings back such great memories of that time, the girls and the wonderful times we had.
I loved Gene Chandler's Songs, Just be true, I fooled you this time, What Now, God Bless Our Love, Rainbow, Duke of Earl. Groovy Situation, just to name a few. These songs are timeless. Wonderful, Brings a smile to my heart.
Love this video of Mr. GENE CHANDLER on American Bandstand back in 1965. I was only 3 yrs old.... but my older brother.... this was year (1965) he graduated high school. Rest in Peace now, my OLDER BROTHER. I know you most likely loved this song.❤
What a great song! Like a lot of guys I had my share of dame troubles in my teens but Gene Chandler, The Impressions, Major Lance and later The Four Tops and eventually The Righteous Brothers got me through it listening to their great music and lyrics. I felt like I was the only white boy in Los Angeles who listened exclusively to the "soul" radio station KGJF in Los Angeles. Well, maybe along with Bill Medley in Orange County. I'm also not surprised that Curtis Mayfield is credited with writing this soulful song.
My friend, I too, grew up in southern California back in the early to mid 1960s. And I too, had my share of girl problems, but unlike you I am black American. Doesn't matter. The music of those groups gave comfort to all, irrespective of race, color, or creed. There was nothing like the music and times listening to KGFJ. But, let's not forget: For an immersion in the "mainstream" music of the times, all one had to do was turn the radio dial to the left and listen to KRLA and KFWB! Man, those were the days. Nothing like southern California in the 1960s.....
i remember being in high school when i first heard rainbow65 what a classic, we all sat around a little portable am radio and mooned over gene while fantasizing about the same football star. "big Larry. Those were the days. by the way we were wearing shifts(dresses).
GENE "The Duke" CHANDLER SHOULD HAVE BEEN INDUCTED INTO THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME YEARS AGO !!! How he's not in ,( with over 30 chart hits, and a Grammy Hall Of Fame Inductee, singer, songwriter , producer, entrepreneur, and record executive), but one -hit wonder Percy Sledge is, BLOWS MY MIND !!!
Yea, Curtis Mayfield wrote this and many other hits for Gene Chandler. Major Lance sang a lot of Curtis' songs too. Beautiful Memories of my being just a little one, 8 or 9 and riding around with my Father. He would meet his crew at the White Castle Lot and they would jam and eat burgers and talk smack. To me my old man was the Prince of the City. Thank you Roy L. Williams for showing me Soul and R&B.
Saw him many times at the Howard Theatre, here in Washington DC. What a video - young kids, holding his 'props' a the end. This video really ties in well with the song...Walk on Mr Chandler, with your BAD self !!
The Duck of Earl, one of my Soul Heroes from the 60s. He and Otis Redding were at the top of a list with Billy Stewart, David Ruffin and the Temps, The Four Tops, and of course the one and only Smokey Robinson. Well, in fact the list is longer cause Marvin and Tami are on there
OK this is what i think happened. Nothing can stop me is owned partly by Warner Chappel. So basically ProleteR screwed Mumbo over. But its just ALL warner chappels fault.
Curtis Mayfield, Major Lance and Gene Chandler all grew up in the Same Neighborhood in Chicago CURTIS MAYFIELD WROTE THIS SONG JUST LIKE HE WROTE ALOT OF SONGS FOR MAJOR LANCE
I recently saw , on the T.V. series UNSUNG, that Gene was instrumental in getting TAMMI TERRELL away from James Brown's abusive grip. WAY TO GO GENE !! although Tammi died tragicly young, you may have indeed been instrumental in extending her life. UNSUNG should do a show on YOU !!!
That's right. That's Tony Micale and the group The Reflections who did "JUST LIKE ROMEO AND JULIET" standing behind Gene as he nears the end of his song. They were there with Gene. I never could understand...white ppl call blk ppl animals, but everything that blk ppl did white ppl always wanted to be in on it. This man made some great music.
@JazzyJ1318 I am confused about our conversation! Duke of Earl was a fabulous song! My favorite though was Rainbow and Rainbow 65! I cant remember how we got on Percy Sledge, but When a Man loves a woman is the all time greatest love song! (Please tell me why are we comparing the two? I'm lost!
Many of Gene's songs were composed by Curtis Mayfield (this may have been one?) Also, I believe the Impressions did back up on some of his songs (specifically "What Now")?
Okay, so here's Gene Chandler, in the middle of his great Brunswick period, on "Shivaree." He had to be in Hollywood doing a live date to get the TV appearance. Anybody know where he performed? One of a small handful of artists/groups who were able to transition from doo wop to soul music beginnings.
Gene Chandler, Jerry Butler, Major Lance and Jackie Wilson were Huge Stars back before Motown!
This is true
Artists like Gene Chandler made me SO proud to be from Chicago. SOUTH SIDE STAND UP!! Much respect to the legendary "Duke Of Englewood" Eugene "Gene Chandler" Dixon or "Mr. Chand" as he called himself on his own record label! Hahaha!!
