Fly Tying Classic Steelhead pattern

My own classic Steelhead fly, I fished this pattern for winter steelies on the Skeena system with great success. I was tying some up for my trip next year and decided to share this one with you! Try this pattern with it's smart use of two hackles and wings, this makes the fly really swim.

Good question! when you don't use silver tinsel under your floss the color will be very dull and unattractive. It is a very common technique used when tying spey/salmon flies, that have floss as a body material. You can do without, but it will look much nicer this way!

Never fished for still water farm trout, but generally I think it is a bit on the large size for trout... try it and find out if it works!

Absolutely beautiful fly. Lots of work but the results I'm sure will pay off. I love the Petitjean vise. I saw you tying on what looked like a Dyna King with the tube flies. Do you have a preference? All the best and thanks for sharing. Sean
+Sean Mooney I now tie my flies tied on hooks on either a Regal revolution or a Norvise. For my tube flies I'm using a FutureFly tube vise. Best Maarten

what hackle are you using in this fly as wing props???
Was there any specific reason for try switch? I have the revolution now, but this thing is just too sexy to not have haha
It's great for smaller flies / hooks, but to rearrange the vise every time you use a different hook is a pain in the a*s.
How do you like the vise? Do you think it's worth the $
to me it is, alltough I now tie on a Regal Revolution

Sure... I fish it a lot in a Hot pink color and a shrimp pink / white combination... but hey... fish it in the
colors you like!
What is the wing material?
The wing is made with Finn Racoon
I looked on the site you recommended, but is the ribbon Kreinek or did you use something else? Need more info on the exact materials used so that I can duplicate it.

totaly lost why would you put the tinsel on and then cover over it makes no sense to me
