The reason they tried to sell them in the car dealerships was because they wanted them to be included in the fleet average fuel economy calculations. The EU required a tax on car manufacturers that did not meet the minimum average fuel economy for their fleet of cars. When BMW heard they could not use the C1 to offset the gas guzzler M range vehicles, they lost interest in the C1.
Yes, there are C1's in New Zealand. When the C1 was first released, due to the nature of our work at the time, we visited BMW Munich and asked that they bring them to NZ. No joy. Then came the America's Cup, and the Italian challenger asked the government to approve them in the Cup Village (BMW was a cup sponsor). So they became approved for use in NZ (but helmets were required), and BMW brought in about 50 to be sold at motorcycle dealerships (not car dealers). The motorbike guys thought they were girly, and they did not sell well. Finally BMW decided to cut the price in half - apparently they did this world-wide, meaning they dropped from NZ$14,000 to $7,000 - and the gold rush was on. Our group bought two... one executive silver C200 and one mustard yellow that came with the stereo system. Half a year later the chairman of the board involuntarily tested the crash system when he was following behind a bus that suddenly veered left to avoid a stationary car turning right. At 40 kph, the chairman hit the Subaru wagon and instantly turned into a ping-pong ball, bouncing all over the road, damaging every panel, breaking the side protector, bending the front and emerging completely unhurt, except for a minor tear in his puffer jacket. The C1 was a write off, but we kept it for spares. Turns out the dealer had one remaining new old stock, and the insurance company bought it for the chairman. BTW the Subaru was a mess. The C1 crash design did its job. Later NZTA changed its fees for registering vehicles, and since the C1 safety was not considered, motorcycle rego was about $450 whereas cars were reduced as low as $100. At the same time, ebikes were coming in - no rego, no anything, and the C1's were sold. I am sure they are around, but I've not seen any on the road for a long while now. They were weird, and the CV transmission was annoying. They should have been electric, and BMW is flirting with a C1-E, but for now, the C1 remains an oddity.

I remember spotting a red and black C1 on I believe Wehiki island, about 10yrs ago, the only one I’d seen in a year in NZ. Always thought it was interesting, but it is so much more then that. It feels safe, it’s fun, but a faff to park and maintain. Love it though. By the way, could have guessed it would be a Subaru to collide with, chances seemed to be 5/10 cars to be a Subaru in NZ ;)
David Bakker yeah is wonderful to ride without helmet and i can ensure is very very secure "motorbike" as i have a little accident with another car and i did not make any damage.
Hello kids! I own a C1, the 125cc version and for all it's weirdness I have come to love it and depend on it for my daily commute and in-city chores. The engine is a Rotax and the bike was made in Italy by Benelli for BMW and it IS safe. I should know. I took a dive at 80km while testing my friend's C1 and came off with just scratches. Granted, it's not your usual scooter. It is top heavy as you pointed out and it requires a bit getting used to specially on the turns. But when it rains, you don't get wet and with the heated seat back, you don't get cold. As far as repairs go, at 37.000 km, I have only done regular maintenance work (brakes, oil changes, rear shocks, filters etc.) and only one major repair to the electrical system and only because I made the mistake of pressure washing the poor thing. Parts are a bit hard to come by but I avoid downtime by keeping it maintained. About that 33km/lt, well.... not so my friend. Mine gets about 270km per 9lt tank, (30km/lt at best) since the day I got it but it's not so bad when you consider my weight of 130kg plus the bike's weight of 186kg (with all the juices). Over all, I would say it does what I bought it to do plus it's a great conversation piece too!
In Greece! They are not common here but being that they were made primarily for the UK market they are fairly easy to obtain. Depending on the mileage and condition their price range can be as low as 700USD or as high as 4,000USD. They are available also in Germany as well as other countries but the good ones come from the UK. They also have the mechanics and parts. Cool, Greece! Great country to ride around without wearing a helmet or riding gear in the warm warm summer I suspect. I always assumed the C1 was designed for busy cities like London, Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin, Köln, etc., but I've seen quite a lot of them in the more southern countries in the EU. Here in The Netherlands without hills, but with rain and ridiculously busy roads, the C1s are getting more popular now then they ever were. Apparently there are about 400 riding around in our small country.
Netherlands? For some reason I thought you were Canadian! :) I believe there are about 20 in my city of Thessaloniki. We have a lot of rain here too so I can understand why they would be useful in the Netherlands! I don't have any of the rain protection plastics neither the side panels nor the back, yet I don't get wet, just a little.. But I'm currently working on some removable acrylic foot guards mounted to side panels to save my shoes from getting wet. If they work out, I'll post photos here.
I lived in Zurich from 2001-2011. I first owned a C1-125 ca. 2004 and later in 2009 found a god deal on a C1-200, so for 2 years I owned 2! I loved them. I took a road trip to Italy on the C1-125, which was a lot of fun, and that's really the truth, if it makes you smile while driving it, it's worth all the cons. It would go into limp mode when doing long hill climbs on mountain passes. After the trip the BMW repair shop said the intake manifold had a leak from warping (I think) and needed to be planed flat & reinstalled. It would still occasionally go into limp mode, but less often. In 2011 I moved back to the USA, I considered trying to import the C1-200 but the chances of it being accepted by the govt agency for street use was slim & I am not a C1 mechanic, so who would fix it..? -I sold them both in Zurich before moved.
Ah that is like a love letter to the C1 :) Sad you had to sell them, happy you had such a great time with them. I heard the C1s are still quite popular in Switzerland, and if I ever needed to sell mine I could very easily do so in Switzerland. Don't know if that is true, but, since you owned two out there, there must be something to riding a C1 en Suisse!

Almost for a year now. And wauw, so easy, so convenient. Highway speeds are a bit more disappointing than I expected, but that is not what it's for. Use it more than my 'real' motorcycle :)

The back box is affectionately referred to as a PDB in the UK. The Pizza Delivery Box. I bought my C1 new from a BMW dealer with the PDB, so the lock and the bike ignition key is the same. In fact one key opens all the bike's locks. The glove box, the seat underwhich the fuel filler can be found, the pillion seat lock and another secret lockable storage compartment under the PDB where the battery is also located. The C1 200 will cruise all day at 65mph and reach 72mph, so faster than trucks that travel on the highways. I have riden mine all over Europe and on one occasion, even beat a friend in a car from North Holland to South Holland, (5-hour journey) because despite his higher motorway speeds, he kept getting stuck in traffic. They might have been expensive to buy new, but you got a lot for your money. A sophisticated reliable engine (four valves per cylinder, fuel injection, computer controlled with sensors everywhere even in the exhaust), stainless steel exhaust system, ABS brakes, heated seat and hand grips, 4-way flashing indicators, windscreen wiper and washer, a laminated glass windscreen (not plastic), a sophisticated stand system that has a weak link clip to prevent damage. (so when you find a stand not operating, you just need to fit a new link clip) You are meant to lift your weight off the seat when operating the stand to ensure there is sufficient space under the stand to swing it back under the bike and visa versa. What tends to happen is that people forget or don't know. They force the stand lever and break the weak link! It's not fragile, it's breaking because of poor handling. My C1 is 20 years old and still on the manufacturers original weak link! I even need to show the mechanics at the MOT test centre each year how to operate the stand because I have seen them struggling with it! Even so called professionals don't know how to use the stands! People who dislike the C1, don't understand it. To them it is a bike with a roof for girlies that don't like getting wet! They just don't understand that the roof is part of a roll cage or safety cell that can suport the weight of 2 tons! It protects the rider from what is called 'Uncontrolled Free Flight' something that every other motorcyclist experiences when involved in a crash! They fly through the air uncontrollably and rely on their helmet and protective clothing. By the way, there are micro switches in the seatbelt connectors. If the seatbelts are not connected, the engine will not rev past idle, ensuring that the seatbelts must be connected up. I say connected up rather than worn, because some stupid riders have discovered that you can connect them up, then simply sit on the seatbelts. 34 thousand C1's were built and sold. I understand that there has never been a fatality of anyone riding a C1 who was wearing the seatbelts correctly, but a number of riders have died going through the windscreen because they weren't wearing their seatbelts! Finally wearing a helmet in a C1 is bad news. On impact the riders body is restrained by the seatbelts and like in a car, the drivers head is thrown forward causing whiplash. Now add an extra kilogram or two with the weight of a helmet! Serious neck injuries! 😢 In the UK I wear a super lightweight snowboarding helmet. Technically the helmet isn't legal because it is not a proper motorcycle helmet, but it looks similar and the police leave me alone. My neck then has a fighting chance if ever I am involved in an accident. They are fun to ride. Because of the high centre of gravity the weight moves back on acceleration pushing the back wheel down onto the road, adding to better rear wheel traction. The continuous variable transmission (single speed gearing) means that 0 to 30mph on dry roads is very, very good! I always leave sports bikes behind at the lights. Because the acceleration is so good, but also because they don't expect the C1 to be so quick and are not ready for me to bolt away. BMW C1 is the safest motorcycle in the world bar none and on today's roads, is there anything more important than that. Definitely ahead of it's time and a true modern classic. 😊
100% agree with you, doesn't matter what others think, if it makes you happy it makes you happy. And I too think it is a rather wonderful machine the C1 :) And Hamburg, we here in The Netherlands hear "it is the new Berlin" in hipness and such. Is it?
David Bakker Yes Hamburg is wonderful. A green city with many sites. Overyone will find here his favorite place. If it is the Reeperbahn or Sternschanze. Or even the Binnenalster or Stadtpark, planten un blomen. Just type those keeyword in google maps and you will have a good preview.
I had one in Norway for a couple of years, an excellent daily commuter, I had the 125 cc. Fit for purpose - if that is single person transport, My ownership was from 2010 at the time I had to be onsite at a customer site 25 km away from home through Oslo, this vehicle guaranteed I could make it there in time, economically. Steering is mostly like a ultralight plane with high wings - the head stays in place and you move the center of gravity by steering away from where you want to go initially.... charming.

@@Vicmot As I have understood it, the point of motorcycle usage for paramedics is to get a paramedic and some equipement on site as soon as possible to stabilize the patient. Transportation of said patient is of later concern. (but I could be mistaken, not my field)

Echt droog blijf je inderdaad niet. Buitje lukt wel, zeker als het binnen bebouwde kom is. Hardere regen en wind, of snelweg dan ga je zeker nat worden. Echt, een combi van C1/Twizzy/... zou geweldig zijn, motor belasting betalen, op de stoep parkeren en droog rijden over de snelweg dat zou ideaal zijn :)

Doing some research before potentially talking to him. Not the style I wanted, but if the price is right I just may purchase it. I've wanted a motorcycle license for long enough. This requires no motorcycle license, it will save a ton on gas, and it (might) be fun to go to and from work. Cheers
Sounds like a plan! Best thing to do; ask if a local repair shop will actually work on your C1 or be prepared to do it yourself. If both are out of the question….
But from experience, it’s the best motorcycle I’ve ever ridden simply because of the no helmet required in this country. How is Canada on helmet law on a C1?

They should make it 3 wheeler with tilting lock. So the rider no need to hold the weight. Because it's heavy. Or even better if they can built self tilting bike that won't fall like the Liger from India.
BMW sold a few in Israel. I saw one in Tel Aviv last week. Owners love them and won't part with them. Pity they didn't sell well enough to give BMW ROI. A 2-wheeled car with a full safety cell. Perhaps all it needed was more power and 2 wheels up front and who knows, it may have been a different story...
My C1 has been off road for a while due absence (out of country). Now the engine won't turn, temperature lights does not come on. Every other light comes on when ignition is turned on. Can anyone help please?
For someone who hates cars and tries to use them the less possible this bmw is great. However I have never seen one and I'm not too interested. I still use normal scooters to get around. Might consider a 3 wheeled one to be safer as a next purchase. PS: I'm also a motorbike rider but hate using gears in the traffic. My riding friends will kill me if I get a 3 wheeled scooter but I will anyway.
I live in Malaysia and no, I haven't seen one. Most bikes in here are 'underbones' like scooter but with gears(some with manual clutch, most are autos). They are mostly lighter than scooters and more fun because you can change gears.
They were not ever sold in the US. That does not mean that none made it here. 😉 Most likely what you saw in SF was the knock-off version. There were a few different Chinese manufacturers that sold scooters with roofs about the same time the C1 was in production. I confirmed about a dozen C1s in the US. The majority of those were in museums. They did import them to Mexico. Not many though, and only the 200cc models.
I've seen many in Berlin and Barcelona but never seen any in the UK that I can recall. Shame really. :/ Definitely buy if I had the extra cash for a 3rd vehicle though. x'D
Sure, but it was very heavy - they used a Rotax engine .- the company being most known for light airplane, snowmobile etc ie smaller engines with high performance. Worked great, but when the tractor - trailer next to you is passed at 100 Km/h you can feel the impact of the large vehicles aerodynamics impacting the top of the C1 making it potentially less stable if not countered correctly.
About 6 months ago I read about a beautiful young English girl, a student, working part time to get through university. Because she was a hard up worker she rode a motor scooter. One day she lost concentration and someone braked suddenly very hard in front of her. She had a helmet on but died because her neck broke when she was ejected onto the car. This wouldn’t have happened on a BMW C1. BMW tried to do something. When people make smart arrested, sanctimonious, knee jerk reviews they destroy good life changing life saving ideas. I see this know it all negative person all the time make reviews or comments. The C1 should have been a success. Bad, but ignorant reviews destroyed it.
I love this piece of shit, driving it for 8 Years now. 60.000 Km. It did save me from getting hurt while slipping on oil on the road and i was flying crash over the sidewalk like in a nutshell. Without the protection i would shurly get hurt. I like this bike a lot, sad that Bmw didnt go on producing it and making it better through the Years. If you dont know how to check and repair the bike like i do, its too expencive- bmw repairs are expencive. If you are able to do the inspections yourself- its a bit of work- Its a god bike. :)
Glad your ok! Never had an accident with the C1, but it feels so much safer than any other bike. BMW is expensive indeed, luckily here in The Netherlands there is a C1 specialist that charges regular prices (and does an outstanding job). In which country do you ride your C1?
David Bakker In Germany It‘s good that you got someone to take care of it if you dont do it yourself, it is a prototype scooter and had little time to develop, thats why it needs someone to check it regulary. Looking forward for the next ride👍
Borrowed a 125 C1 in the UK for a 30 Mile journey.....it was slow and Noisy...had a high centre of Gravity.. The Rain came in through the sides ,luckily I had full Bike clothing on. as the rider is way back from the front the steering was far too light Vibration was bad awful thing. it makes a Honda C90 seem like a beautiful bike...which it is.
I used to have one, the thing is perfect for commuting. The only problem really is that it looks like shit and you look like a dumbass on it. Apart of that, I loved it.

The C1 meet to roll together with other C1 owners! Nice. Such a shame BWM doesn’t have the C1 in their own museum or seem to be wanting to make a successor... Still think an updated C1 for 2019 with more power or electric drive, and a different marketing spiel could be a success.
Oh yeah that is right.. Shame. I’ve heard from VarioBob he is trying to get funds together to convert existing C1s to electric, don’t know if he’s still working on it.

Yes, Germany, it's birthplace! I've seen the scattered around Berlin, Koln, basically the big cities. Usually they did look worse for wear, as if they lived outside, all the time.
First motorcycle, great! Decided on what it will be? I always thought I'd have a C1 as a first bike, but then you get into the thrill of 'real' motorcycles and I ended up buying a TDM 900 instead as a first bike. Finally bought this C1, and whilst it doesn't feel like a 'real' bike, I do love it.
Got an A2 limited GSX600F last fall. Had a 50cc scooter I rode every weekend before that, caught the motorbike bug when a customer let me ride his Virago. I can't help but feel like I'd rather just go for a slide in full kevlar than be strapped to a little scooter with a roof.
Hi David, I have a C 125 Executive full optional( roof top, alarm, passenger kit, abs, heated seat and handles, speakers system plus the other optional that came with the executive version) 20K km, drove 400km right after I bought it and did approx 3K Km on it since I got it last year. I have other scooters and motorcycles so I don’t use it often but I love it! Pros : nice riding position much better than scooters, fun to ride once you get used to it, powerful break (ABS version), heated handles and seat, speakers (if I could get them to work) mileage, makes you smile, no helmet in the Summer, priceless questions form people asking if it is a new model/prototype 😂 Cons: no storage (the only optional I am missing is the top case which I refuse to buy)noisy engine with lots of vibrations, cumbersome to park/ to get in get out, can’t park on uneven surfaces, and if you forget something once you are all strapped and ready to go it’s a pita because you have to do the all procedure all over again...and costly maintenance because nobody but BMW knows how to deal with this thing😀 Anyway not so many left here in Italy, because of the costly maintenance once they stopped working many of them were chopped and use for parts which is not bad for the few owners left.
I saw these a lot in London in the early 2000s. London was pretty perfect place for these- no one ever went 120km/hr. I drove a vespa and was pretty interested at the time.
London would be absolutely the place to ride one of these! In a suit if need be. But from what I've heard, in the UK you'd be required to wear a helmet on a C1. Still, great little machine. If they would come out with a newer version of the C1 with more highway capabilities and bit more luggage options I'd be in line :)
Have a c200. Great through the city. And yes, you stay dry when it rains 😁. The only thing I don't like is driving on the freeway above 100kp/h, you catch too much wind and that makes the c1 very unstable .
Have a BMW Wiliams 125cc in London, been in my garage for 10 years, after watching this video I sent it to BMW for servicing and MOT. Will either use it or sell it by Spring 2023.
Hi David. You just got a new subscriber. Really nice review: you clarified many interesing points about this weird, but super fun "thing" 😂. Here, in Italy, there are more C1s than you can imagine, not many of them, but quite a lot, considering the small amount they produced. There's always one parked in front of my house (I live in Turin) and I remeber I used to see plenty of them, here in Piedmont, back at the time, when i was younger.
Hey, I am from Belgium and own a C1 200, yellow. It is great fun and practical, but you have to get use to drive it and the parkingstand is fragile, indeed !

Parts are a bit hard to come by but I avoid downtime by keeping it maintained.
About that 33km/lt, well.... not so my friend. Mine gets about 270km per 9lt tank, (30km/lt at best) since the day I got it but it's not so bad when you consider my weight of 130kg plus the bike's weight of 186kg (with all the juices).
Over all, I would say it does what I bought it to do plus it's a great conversation piece too!

They are not common here but being that they were made primarily for the UK market they are fairly easy to obtain.
Depending on the mileage and condition their price range can be as low as 700USD or as high as 4,000USD.

Cool, Greece! Great country to ride around without wearing a helmet or riding gear in the warm warm summer I suspect. I always assumed the C1 was designed for busy cities like London, Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin, Köln, etc., but I've seen quite a lot of them in the more southern countries in the EU.
Here in The Netherlands without hills, but with rain and ridiculously busy roads, the C1s are getting more popular now then they ever were. Apparently there are about 400 riding around in our small country.

I believe there are about 20 in my city of Thessaloniki. We have a lot of rain here too so I can understand why they would be useful in the Netherlands!
I don't have any of the rain protection plastics neither the side panels nor the back, yet I don't get wet, just a little.. But I'm currently working on some removable acrylic foot guards mounted to side panels to save my shoes from getting wet. If they work out, I'll post photos here.
I lived in Zurich from 2001-2011. I first owned a C1-125 ca. 2004 and later in 2009 found a god deal on a C1-200, so for 2 years I owned 2! I loved them. I took a road trip to Italy on the C1-125, which was a lot of fun, and that's really the truth, if it makes you smile while driving it, it's worth all the cons. It would go into limp mode when doing long hill climbs on mountain passes. After the trip the BMW repair shop said the intake manifold had a leak from warping (I think) and needed to be planed flat & reinstalled. It would still occasionally go into limp mode, but less often. In 2011 I moved back to the USA, I considered trying to import the C1-200 but the chances of it being accepted by the govt agency for street use was slim & I am not a C1 mechanic, so who would fix it..? -I sold them both in Zurich before moved.
Ah that is like a love letter to the C1 :) Sad you had to sell them, happy you had such a great time with them. I heard the C1s are still quite popular in Switzerland, and if I ever needed to sell mine I could very easily do so in Switzerland. Don't know if that is true, but, since you owned two out there, there must be something to riding a C1 en Suisse!

The back box is affectionately referred to as a PDB in the UK. The Pizza Delivery Box. I bought my C1 new from a BMW dealer with the PDB, so the lock and the bike ignition key is the same. In fact one key opens all the bike's locks. The glove box, the seat underwhich the fuel filler can be found, the pillion seat lock and another secret lockable storage compartment under the PDB where the battery is also located.
The C1 200 will cruise all day at 65mph and reach 72mph, so faster than trucks that travel on the highways. I have riden mine all over Europe and on one occasion, even beat a friend in a car from North Holland to South Holland, (5-hour journey) because despite his higher motorway speeds, he kept getting stuck in traffic.
They might have been expensive to buy new, but you got a lot for your money. A sophisticated reliable engine (four valves per cylinder, fuel injection, computer controlled with sensors everywhere even in the exhaust), stainless steel exhaust system, ABS brakes, heated seat and hand grips, 4-way flashing indicators, windscreen wiper and washer, a laminated glass windscreen (not plastic), a sophisticated stand system that has a weak link clip to prevent damage. (so when you find a stand not operating, you just need to fit a new link clip)
You are meant to lift your weight off the seat when operating the stand to ensure there is sufficient space under the stand to swing it back under the bike and visa versa. What tends to happen is that people forget or don't know. They force the stand lever and break the weak link! It's not fragile, it's breaking because of poor handling. My C1 is 20 years old and still on the manufacturers original weak link! I even need to show the mechanics at the MOT test centre each year how to operate the stand because I have seen them struggling with it! Even so called professionals don't know how to use the stands!
People who dislike the C1, don't understand it. To them it is a bike with a roof for girlies that don't like getting wet! They just don't understand that the roof is part of a roll cage or safety cell that can suport the weight of 2 tons! It protects the rider from what is called 'Uncontrolled Free Flight' something that every other motorcyclist experiences when involved in a crash! They fly through the air uncontrollably and rely on their helmet and protective clothing.
By the way, there are micro switches in the seatbelt connectors. If the seatbelts are not connected, the engine will not rev past idle, ensuring that the seatbelts must be connected up. I say connected up rather than worn, because some stupid riders have discovered that you can connect them up, then simply sit on the seatbelts.
34 thousand C1's were built and sold. I understand that there has never been a fatality of anyone riding a C1 who was wearing the seatbelts correctly, but a number of riders have died going through the windscreen because they weren't wearing their seatbelts!
Finally wearing a helmet in a C1 is bad news. On impact the riders body is restrained by the seatbelts and like in a car, the drivers head is thrown forward causing whiplash. Now add an extra kilogram or two with the weight of a helmet! Serious neck injuries! 😢 In the UK I wear a super lightweight snowboarding helmet. Technically the helmet isn't legal because it is not a proper motorcycle helmet, but it looks similar and the police leave me alone. My neck then has a fighting chance if ever I am involved in an accident.
They are fun to ride. Because of the high centre of gravity the weight moves back on acceleration pushing the back wheel down onto the road, adding to better rear wheel traction. The continuous variable transmission (single speed gearing) means that 0 to 30mph on dry roads is very, very good! I always leave sports bikes behind at the lights. Because the acceleration is so good, but also because they don't expect the C1 to be so quick and are not ready for me to bolt away.
BMW C1 is the safest motorcycle in the world bar none and on today's roads, is there anything more important than that.
Definitely ahead of it's time and a true modern classic. 😊

Yes Hamburg is wonderful. A green city with many sites. Overyone will find here his favorite place. If it is the Reeperbahn or Sternschanze. Or even the Binnenalster or Stadtpark, planten un blomen. Just type those keeyword in google maps and you will have a good preview.
I had one in Norway for a couple of years, an excellent daily commuter, I had the 125 cc. Fit for purpose - if that is single person transport, My ownership was from 2010 at the time I had to be onsite at a customer site 25 km away from home through Oslo, this vehicle guaranteed I could make it there in time, economically. Steering is mostly like a ultralight plane with high wings - the head stays in place and you move the center of gravity by steering away from where you want to go initially.... charming.

Depends on the county, in the Netherlands you don’t need to, I know in the UK you have to wear a helmet on the c1

Echt droog blijf je inderdaad niet. Buitje lukt wel, zeker als het binnen bebouwde kom is. Hardere regen en wind, of snelweg dan ga je zeker nat worden. Echt, een combi van C1/Twizzy/... zou geweldig zijn, motor belasting betalen, op de stoep parkeren en droog rijden over de snelweg dat zou ideaal zijn :)

Sounds like a plan! Best thing to do; ask if a local repair shop will actually work on your C1 or be prepared to do it yourself. If both are out of the question….
But from experience, it’s the best motorcycle I’ve ever ridden simply because of the no helmet required in this country. How is Canada on helmet law on a C1?

They should make it 3 wheeler with tilting lock. So the rider no need to hold the weight. Because it's heavy. Or even better if they can built self tilting bike that won't fall like the Liger from India.
BMW sold a few in Israel. I saw one in Tel Aviv last week. Owners love them and won't part with them. Pity they didn't sell well enough to give BMW ROI. A 2-wheeled car with a full safety cell. Perhaps all it needed was more power and 2 wheels up front and who knows, it may have been a different story...

My C1 has been off road for a while due absence (out of country). Now the engine won't turn, temperature lights does not come on. Every other light comes on when ignition is turned on. Can anyone help please?

For someone who hates cars and tries to use them the less possible this bmw is great. However I have never seen one and I'm not too interested. I still use normal scooters to get around. Might consider a 3 wheeled one to be safer as a next purchase.
PS: I'm also a motorbike rider but hate using gears in the traffic. My riding friends will kill me if I get a 3 wheeled scooter but I will anyway.

I live in Malaysia and no, I haven't seen one. Most bikes in here are 'underbones' like scooter but with gears(some with manual clutch, most are autos). They are mostly lighter than scooters and more fun because you can change gears.

They were not ever sold in the US. That does not mean that none made it here. 😉
Most likely what you saw in SF was the knock-off version. There were a few different Chinese manufacturers that sold scooters with roofs about the same time the C1 was in production.
I confirmed about a dozen C1s in the US. The majority of those were in museums.
They did import them to Mexico. Not many though, and only the 200cc models.
I've seen many in Berlin and Barcelona but never seen any in the UK that I can recall. Shame really. :/ Definitely buy if I had the extra cash for a 3rd vehicle though. x'D

Sure, but it was very heavy - they used a Rotax engine .- the company being most known for light airplane, snowmobile etc ie smaller engines with high performance. Worked great, but when the tractor - trailer next to you is passed at 100 Km/h you can feel the impact of the large vehicles aerodynamics impacting the top of the C1 making it potentially less stable if not countered correctly.

About 6 months ago I read about a beautiful young English girl, a student, working part time to get through university. Because she was a hard up worker she rode a motor scooter. One day she lost concentration and someone braked suddenly very hard in front of her. She had a helmet on but died because her neck broke when she was ejected onto the car. This wouldn’t have happened on a BMW C1. BMW tried to do something. When people make smart arrested, sanctimonious, knee jerk reviews they destroy good life changing life saving ideas. I see this know it all negative person all the time make reviews or comments. The C1 should have been a success. Bad, but ignorant reviews destroyed it.
Exactly. The c1 is The only safe-ish motorcycle... in the world. And very frugal on fuel. It should have or at least in hindsight be applauded
I love this piece of shit, driving it for 8 Years now. 60.000 Km.
It did save me from getting hurt while slipping on oil on the road and i was flying crash over the sidewalk like in a nutshell. Without the protection i would shurly get hurt.
I like this bike a lot, sad that Bmw didnt go on producing it and making it better through the Years.
If you dont know how to check and repair the bike like i do, its too expencive- bmw repairs are expencive.
If you are able to do the inspections yourself- its a bit of work-

Glad your ok! Never had an accident with the C1, but it feels so much safer than any other bike. BMW is expensive indeed, luckily here in The Netherlands there is a C1 specialist that charges regular prices (and does an outstanding job).

Borrowed a 125 C1 in the UK for a 30 Mile journey.....it was slow and Noisy...had a high centre of Gravity..

The C1 meet to roll together with other C1 owners! Nice. Such a shame BWM doesn’t have the C1 in their own museum or seem to be wanting to make a successor... Still think an updated C1 for 2019 with more power or electric drive, and a different marketing spiel could be a success.

First motorcycle, great! Decided on what it will be? I always thought I'd have a C1 as a first bike, but then you get into the thrill of 'real' motorcycles and I ended up buying a TDM 900 instead as a first bike. Finally bought this C1, and whilst it doesn't feel like a 'real' bike, I do love it.
Got an A2 limited GSX600F last fall. Had a 50cc scooter I rode every weekend before that, caught the motorbike bug when a customer let me ride his Virago. I can't help but feel like I'd rather just go for a slide in full kevlar than be strapped to a little scooter with a roof.

I have a C 125 Executive full optional( roof top, alarm, passenger kit, abs, heated seat and handles, speakers system plus the other optional that came with the executive version) 20K km, drove 400km right after I bought it and did approx 3K Km on it since I got it last year. I have other scooters and motorcycles so I don’t use it often but I love it!
Pros : nice riding position much better than scooters, fun to ride once you get used to it, powerful break (ABS version), heated handles and seat, speakers (if I could get them to work) mileage, makes you smile, no helmet in the Summer, priceless questions form people asking if it is a new model/prototype 😂
Cons: no storage (the only optional I am missing is the top case which I refuse to buy)noisy engine with lots of vibrations, cumbersome to park/ to get in get out, can’t park on uneven surfaces, and if you forget something once you are all strapped and ready to go it’s a pita because you have to do the all procedure all over again...and costly maintenance because nobody but BMW knows how to deal with this thing😀
Anyway not so many left here in Italy, because of the costly maintenance once they stopped working many of them were chopped and use for parts which is not bad for the few owners left.

I saw these a lot in London in the early 2000s. London was pretty perfect place for these- no one ever went 120km/hr. I drove a vespa and was pretty interested at the time.
London would be absolutely the place to ride one of these! In a suit if need be. But from what I've heard, in the UK you'd be required to wear a helmet on a C1. Still, great little machine. If they would come out with a newer version of the C1 with more highway capabilities and bit more luggage options I'd be in line :)

Have a c200. Great through the city. And yes, you stay dry when it rains 😁. The only thing I don't like is driving on the freeway above 100kp/h, you catch too much wind and that makes the c1 very unstable .

Have a BMW Wiliams 125cc in London, been in my garage for 10 years, after watching this video I sent it to BMW for servicing and MOT. Will either use it or sell it by Spring 2023.

Here, in Italy, there are more C1s than you can imagine, not many of them, but quite a lot, considering the small amount they produced. There's always one parked in front of my house (I live in Turin) and I remeber I used to see plenty of them, here in Piedmont, back at the time, when i was younger.
Hey, I am from Belgium and own a C1 200, yellow. It is great fun and practical, but you have to get use to drive it and the parkingstand is fragile, indeed !
