This is a fallacy. As someone who works with old land rovers. No. The old ones are more unreliable. The Lucas electrics on Land Rovers dating back to 1948 are the butt of many jokes - modern electronics at least tell you what's wrong and are more logically bundled, and diffs/driveshafts don't explode like they did on these old ones
As a child of 14 and living on the Solihull factory doorstep, I worked in the LandRover factory for work experience in 1994. I worked on the machine that tapped block threads, and final engine dressing on the 300 Tdi line where I mounted intake manifolds, and the turbo. Maybe I worked on that engine...Great to see how strong these old lumps are.
It's not strong, poverty forces us to fix those things every day to go to work or somewhere We want new things but everything is expensive + the new things are way too complexe to fix which require special tools and education
@Susan Alventi the electronics have no reason to break man. This engine has problems caused by the lack of them; you act as if a new car goes in every 4 years for a wiring loom.. they don't - million mile Lexus' are not uncommon, yet the 1UZ and the LS400 (most prolific high mile Lexus') are fully motorised and ECU controlled
@@bradleycruse2763 Yes but the problem is IF it does break, your only option is to replace it. If you manage to water damage the ECU of a car in the middle of Congo you have no options. With an older style system there is almost always a way to patch the problem so you can get somewhere for help.

I respect the bushcraft wizardry that keeps this car running. It’s hard to really understand the amount of thought that actually goes into stuff like this
I have noticed lots of the cars shown on this channel don't have radiator caps or air filters. There has to be a reason for this? My theory for the missing rad caps is that most these vehicles have blown head gaskets, and they run it as an unpressurized cooling system. Probably to minimize coolant going into the cylinders and reduce the risk of blowing hoses off from excessive pressure. If they also remove the thermostat the coolant would probably never get hot enough to boil. So no need for a rad cap. If so this is genius lol. Also I remember reading a comment on another video that they purposely run no air filter on worn out engines, because they want the dust to gum up inside of the engine to boost compression. I have a hard time believing this actually works though.
And due to the bad roads they cant drive fast, so they dont get as hot when running without radator caps and get away with things in such poor condition. BUT you can be sure it gets overloaded and driven in places many people would only take a fully kitted 4X4 !!

I've been looking at this for a while trying to figure out what it started out as since there's not much of it left, doesn't look like a factory 300tdi. Seats look like early 110, maybe 1984. 3 bolt steering box, up to 84. Doors are roll down windows with early catches so 85? Series roof and windscreen for the hell of it. Radiator hoses have been extended so the engine is sitting further back, presumably bolted to an lt77. No intercooler fitted either, or any turbo hoses or air filter. The engine is set up for egr which would make it 96+. Axles have single piece drive flanges which I believe would come from a 300tdi discovery. I'm going to guess early 1985 with an engine swap
Doors are up to 87, bulkhead is series 2 modified, front axle is actually either early 200tdi D1 or more likely RRC. suspension and everything else points to about a 1984-7 vehicle.
What a wonderful 110! True 'Bush Mechanics' if I ever saw it! My wife loves to tell me how unreliable old Land Rovers are, I think I'll have to show this to her!
There are a lot of untruths in this video, the vehicle is basically a 1984-87 bodywork, with Series 2 roof, screen, bulkhead is early 110, the engine is not original as is actually a DISCOVERY 300tdi with EGR, the original would have been a petrol, NA or posibly TD, but the fan shroud and 3 bolt non PAS steering box is again early vehicles (All 300tdi were 4 bolt boxes and PAS) The engine is too far back for a genuine 300tdi, the gearbox is LT77 - so again pre 94, suspension arms are thin/small so that is also pre94, the front axle is a 10 spline D1/RRC as has stub shaft drive flanges, Radiator is full width so that goes with the early engine types. With all that, the odometer is not going to be believable... We all know that in Africa you make do and mend, but claims of 1,000,000 km is unsubstanciated as per some articles sharing this video. Claiming to be a 94 is definitely a 100% fraud.
