It's a shame since I really do like your training content, but this is blown out of the proportion. Yes a lot of people adopt mals without proper understanding and yes they require tremendous amount of discipline, not to mention physical + intelectual stimulation. The point that giving your mals all the time in the world or that training and exercise is not enough? That's just wrong. I can only assume that you're speaking from the perspective of french ring which is more than ok since it creates very specific context. I own a mountain rescue dog and without being "worked" and only trained he can save peoples lives. So yeah mals are not your typical couch potato, they have tremendous drive, not to mention combination of atleticism and intelect that require a lot of effort. At the same time "working dog" is still a "dog". If you have an active lifestyle and understand the need of proper socialisation, discipline and training you're more than capable of owning malinois. This weird gatekeeping makes it just harder for those dogs in shelters that you mentioned in the video to gets adopted as people use very extreme contexts showcased in videos like this as reference points for the whole breed.

My Malinois was 14 months old, unsocialized and completely untrained when I took her home March 16, 2023 from the Tacoma Humane Society. Maxine had been adopted twice and returned back to the shelter twice on day two and day three. She now had a bite record, a dog fight (due to being mishandled by those two different idiots who first took her home, I mean f*ck sake people) and she was highly reactive. We are coming up on our one-year anniversary, it's taken one hell of a lot of work to get her to where she is now. We are working hard to try for her French Ring Brevet. Before I had gotten her, I had been planning to get a Malinois for thirty years, except life had taken me on a long detour.
While the rare pet quality Malinois is out there, the rest of them are a lifestyle change a person must be willing to make without exception.

This is all true. However the reward you get from that rescue pup is unmatched. It took us about a year to get our girl to where she is. She was a 5 yo breeder momma. Poor thing was scared of everything and extremely reactive. She’s now the absolute best dog I’ve ever had.

PS. I'm glad she was returned because after she settled in, she presented with a long list of behaviors that if not handled properly she would have gotten the pink juice. Her reactivity towards everything was off the charts as was her human aggression, all due to a lack of environmental socialization at the proper milestones. But a friend saw her and asked me if she was the same dog from last year and I knew we had come so far and always celebrate the wins no matter how small they are.

I have a pet Malinois. He's a very good pet too. So is my Doberman and also my pitbull. Not a single one works or has worked in their lives and they are very happy dogs. It seems execise and training does in fact give them what they need. What happens to the dogs in the shelters when you tell people they can't have them? Why not educated people on working lines instead of working breeds. I know black labs that are service animals you take with you everywhere and I know some that only want to track and get dirty. The Mal highlighted here is probably from a long line of succeful working dogs. Mine came from a farm. Same breed characteristics very different dogs.

Some individual dogs are not fit for that sport. They should also enjoy life in a family capable of meeting their needs as pets.

My mally is great with people, loves other dogs and is still highly trained (for a family pet dog). She Doesnt have to do bite training or work as a guard dog because shes a family pet and has been raised to be friendly.
Most of these malli videos try to over emphasise the breed they are talking about and act like the normal person shouldnt have 1 unless they want it only as a working dog, when a dog ultimately is a dog and any breed can be trained to do roughly the same thing. Malli's can be socialised well to be a very nice family dog. It depends what you want out of them but to say any breed of dog is generally not good as a family pet is wrong.

    I could not agree more.
My wife and I used to be committed cyclists before we got our Mali. Aaaaaaand we ride maybe twice a month now.
We tried obedience and agility work with him which was a total disaster. He was just too impatient and would act up while the trainer was lecturing us. The trainer then suggested we try employing his nose. We've been doing trailing with him for just over a year now and he recently did his first live case. We do trailing training twice a week with him and run every morning to bleed off a little energy. There's about 10 dogs in our training group. Only Mali's and working line GSD's. There's always a healthy amount of Mali vs GSD banter. All of the dogs clearly love the work and it's honestly the highlight of my week. Seeing the dogs work is like watching a miracle unfold.
Mali's are incredible things. They aren't dogs. They are something that is beyond a dog. But they will take over your whole life. Or you'll abandon them. I don't think there's a middle ground.

I think a malinois may be perfect for me, but I'm wondering if service dog work, schutzhund, agility, obedience, and fast CAT would suffice for keeping the dog satisfied? I work in a vet clinic and he would be able to come to work with me on the days I'm away from home. I'm also getting in my hours to be a CPDT so I understand a lot about canine behavior. Would a lifestyle like this + walking, hiking, etc be good for a mal? Or would you advise I look into a different breed? Thank you so much!

All dogs are family members; there is no conceptual labels of 'pet' or 'protection' and so on. I recall decades ago a young rooster hunter trying to teach me that his hounds were 'not pets.' I set him straight right away. And surprisingly, he actually learned. We linked up again a few years later; he was working for fish and game running rogue critters; hounds were lion experienced. I was teaching a paper at gov. function, unrelated to K9s. He approached me, nodded, handed me a photo of his toddler running around the yard with happy hounds running. :)

100% I have a well bred working line gsd and my dog is my partner (which I consider to be a higher placement than a pet for those reading this who might not know what I mean) and she absolutely is always learning and evolving. It’s my job to come up with new ways to challenge her on a DAILY basis. And I say this as someone who grew up with working shepherds (we didn’t use them for sport we used them for herding our beef cattle and meat goats) the working lines for bite sport/protection are DIFFERENT. Good, what I was looking for, and my girl is always above and beyond an excellent fit but her brain is different than the herding dogs we had. She is waiting for a command. If I don’t give her a command, she will make her own fun. The herding dogs would largely work with just one send out command and then a couple of guiding commands along the way if needed. It’s a difference between being proactive vs reactive.

The funny thing is I have had a show line cross working line GSD , dedicated show line and a pure working line GSD. The latter required far less mental and physical stimulation.
I think sometimes we focus too much on the words ‘working line’, instead of looking at pups individually at times.
Some working line bred dogs Ive had in the past were couch potatoes and just wanted to hang with family and I had others loved their family but would climb the walls if not given a job to do. It varied so much with littermates.
ATM I have a working line ASTCD, a Groenendael and a Tervuren. The Groen is far more wired than the other two, but in paper it should be the opposite

yeah, get a german shepherd. gsd can do anything a mali can do plus they can live as family members which means that your pet gsd will be by your side when you get an intruder or someone tries to attack you. your mali is with you when you train, whereas gsd is part of yur family and life which means that it'll be protecting what needs to be protecting when need arises whereas the mali will be locked in a kennel when situation arises when protection dog services are required.

    • @routerider9542
      @routerider9542 7 месяцев назад

If you have some property, a GSD will be a great asset and family companion. It will hang around and watch and listen to everything everywhere all the time day or night. In the house or outside. Perfect for keeping any undesirables away. I found out after my first two GSD's that - two - (male and female) were better than one. Breed standard - The Working Line Dog has the edge but I had good success with American line too. For this type of dog you have to be their leader so they will pay attention to you. Any pet/or working dog will require proper care , training , exercise and will be part of your daily life. The German Shepherd Dog is tough to beat.

Honestly it comes down to the Dogs genetics. If you have a dog with super nerves regardless of breed. They would be just as comfortable living in a small apt in NYC as they would 300 acres in cabin in New Hampshire.
Genetics load the gun. Environment ( training socialising etc) pulls the trigger. I've seen plenty of Mals and Dutch shepherd's here in NYC that do fine inside the home with their families.. The other thing also is and its never mentioned. Is people mistake energy for "drive". your dog is bouncing off walls and pacing in their crate that isn't drive. Thats anxiety that's nerves!
