Easily your best video yet Andy! Watching this I picked up so many simple concepts I've been overlooking. Question: I noticed you held your leash behind your back with your opposite hand. Can you go into a little more detail on this method? I started doing this early on in Zeus's heal training cause i found it was helping but stopped when my club president told me I should never do this but never really explained why or offered a working alternative.
Love hearing that! Thank you! 🙏🏼 I like the leash behind the back because if the dog understands leash pressure, it keeps him in perfect Heel position. Of course this only works if the command has been built with food properly first. I can then pressure or correct if I need to without my left hand/ the dog seeing it. You could always go back to this method and just not do it at club! 😆🙌🏻
so far, so good. But what to do if the dog is forging ahead, or if he isn't heeling that close or moving that fast if you turn? Does disobeying have any consequences? Or only rewarding when he's doing right (amplifying the positive)?
Moral of the story: The dog is very smart and wants to please you so he will try to anticipate what you want, and may actually do what you do not want if he anticipates incorrectly. So mix it up so he is less comfortable anticipating.
1) How much time would you consider that is needed daily to train a young Melanois? in addition to an 8 to 10 k daily walk? 2) What toys and track obstacles would be absolutely necessary? 3) Is a surface with grass is absolutely necessary?
Hi Andy, thanks for the videos! I'm got a Belgian Malinois that is about 18 months old. His name is Kaine and I got him from a dog rescue group. He apparently has had some training, but he is still very rambunctious as he CONSTANTLY jumps on me and other people. He also jumps on the door of the house too. Every night I bring him inside and put him in his crate. In the morning, when I let him out he bolts for the door and jumps on the door. My door and walls look like hell. How can I break him of jumping on people, and jumping on the door? I feel that I need to quash this first before I can get into things like sit (he knows this), down( ok with this), and stay (nope, not good at all). He is food and toy driven. He loves to play fetch and will run and get a toy I throw, but won't bring it to me directly. I've been trying to give the toy to me by staying the word GIVE, but sometimes he gets it, other times he doesn't. Your suggestions?
Completely change the lifestyle and every interaction you have with him. Dog training is NOT about stopping things, it’s about BUILDING. Especially with breeds that are not meant to be pets. I’d watch all of my videos 👍🏻
Love your channel. I have recently begun training with a trainer who also has done French ring from the Cincinnati area. Mike Kennedy. Ever heard of him?
Your very passionate about dog training and that encourages me, keep up the good work, and I have a question, and I want to hear your take on it. I saw a video once of a dog trainer talking about when you tell your dog to sit you don't have to tell him to stay, because sit means sit until you tell your dog to either come or stand, what do you think about that?
Andy, at what point do you move to working your dog away from your home field? At that point, do you expect to need to back up your training to offset the distractions of a strange environment?
I'm researching into starting to look for my retired Service Dog's successor. I found in CA, 2 male Malinois brothers at a rescue and adoption place. I thought I was going to relocate from where I am presently living since my plans of moving west was prevented when Covid happened. Waiting on other housing I still want to get started on training of new Service Dog. Finding the right dog is hard since here in New Mexico I'm without transportation since losing everything just before Covid. I'm wondering would you change anything in your obedience training shown in these 2 videos for someone like me training for a Service Dog? Watching your Malinois jump on you and grab onto the tugs I feel like the dogs are learning for the outcome of being guard dogs or patrol dogs for military or police work. Yet not all my thoughts are wanting a Service Dog just for mobility needs. During the Covid situation I and my Service Dog went through some serious life-threatening things to where I have PTSD from our threatening attacks, so having a Service Dog to have more training than my retired S.D. now. Although I never had to train the safeguarding of my life... she has several times in the 12 yrs. of her Service saved my life from attacks. She still is so in tune to life threatening problems she still handles it all, even at 17 yrs. in age she is still cares for me. For just the initial training for new Service Dog will take over a yr. to maybe 2 yrs. but with the other training for maybe like my other dog was so smart at detecting cancer cells way before my friend went to doctor for medical updates with testing for cancer. If you happen to know of any organizations that will do state to state transporting of rescue/adoption dog I wish to bring her to me in NM. I'd appreciate all help you can think of contacting.
I heard you say that Freddy stays in a crate so being able to come out and work with you is a treat in and of itself. I am training my dog but I live on a farm and she is never in a crate and she has a lot of room to run and etc. and have mental stimulation. Do I need to crate her while we go through a few months of training or is that a lifelong thing or what? Also, she sleeps on my bed or on the floor next to my bed at night, is this bad. My goal is to have an obedient farm dog, I don’t do any sort of competitions.
In first video, you had lead in front of legs...this one you have lead behind legs, is this because he has a consistent heel now? Also how to you transition from doing engagement heel with puppies to working a heel like this?
Hi Andy, great video great tips. I have a question for you. I didn't understand the "stay" command. When I send my dog to "sit", my goal is for him to stay there until he gets another command. to explain to him again that he should stay there does not make sense for me. I'm a big fan and many of your tips have made life with my malinois easier.
Hey! Great question! An implied stay is a good way to train as well! I train a verbal stay because it is required in the rules of the dog sport I compete in. But I like both ways honestly 🙏🏼
@@AndyKrueger that's what i like most about you and the reason i follow you. you give people and dogs the opportunity to improve, but you also give them the space to go their own way.🤙🤙🤙
I am amazed by the dog, trainer but I don’t know if it is showing me how to get my dog to learn the behaviors and what you do if they don’t do what your trying to teach.
Do you have a video on the how to train or teach down, sit but from far away. So if he were to retrieve something and on his way back I say down, or sit my dog just keeps coming back to me. If I start him.in a down or sit position and I walk away he does a bit better but then gets up to comes towards me. Which way is best to keep practicing or should I keep doing both.
If the dog has good positions close to you, adding distance should come easily. If the dog seems to have good positions close but can’t do them with distance, I’d say they are not good enough close 👍🏻
Then we will continue with basics up close...so we can nail the far away.. thank you for replying.. I enjoy watching your videos and always learning something new
Question, will you be able to train other breed the same way you train Belgian Malinois? From watching Belgian Malinois training, their laser focus quality is awesome. It might be a stupid question, but is it possible to train a mini Schnauzer or a poodle mix to have that kind of focus?
Andy I am in a wheelchair. It’s difficult to train my dog and mimic how you train the heal command. Can you do a couple of session using a chair and not be able to bend over to reach your dog.
First off, you have very informative videos. I do have a question. Why do you double command the dog? If sit means sit then why is there any need to command him to stay? Same thing with he down command.
Thank you 🙏🏼 I also like the concept of implied stay. I agree Stay is a helper/ double command. I train this way with Freddy to abide by the rules in the French Ring Sport.
@@AndyKrueger I was wondering if it was a Ring Sport issue. Both my Mali's come from KNPV lines. My male comes from Big Roy / Berry II. Female is Manni/Django
@@jerrodalford9708 Sounds like nice dogs! Yep, in Ringsport you can give a stay command but technically I don’t think you have to. But since the handling requirements are so strict and so much control is required of the dog throughout, I take all the extra commands I can get!
Think of it like putting a car in park. If you stop it, and put it in neutral, you're probably good. But what if you're in a rush, and forget about/don't notice the grade/slope. You run off, and your car rolls down the hill, crashing into who-knows-what. It doesn't roll away if you put it in park, and you have to take it out to get moving. Stuff happens fast, and comes out of nowhere. I like knowing my dog's not moving, until i want him to.
Just rescued a 4 yr old male ill call a king Belgium Malinois. King German Shepherd and Belgian Malinois. 100 lbs. No known training, boarding shelter last two months. Neutered. healthy strong, using lunge, voice, feeding 4 meals per day. He bit me upper forearm on delivery. Harness only. Can you point me to someone in this same situation. Btw this guy was only suppose to be a German shepherd.
Really appreciate the reminder to keep working the basics - I was wondering if you ever worked with standard poodles? Just curious, I was noticing at 5:51 in the video that Freddy appeared to be snapping at your hand; is that normal?
I am new too. Have a female Belgian Malinois 2 months and i need the full day of the dog broke down, 🙏 wake up? Kennel time? Water? Food only for training at first Also should i train in french, why not right? Just sounds better also the way the leash is behind you is way better! Need more help then most!
Ecollar is a great asset, I hated them! My mali x, Salem was harrasing my shepherd, Nix, he wouldnt leave the top step without me cause she missile attacked him. Got ecollar, Ive had it for 2 years, I've only had to use 5 x's, on vibrate setting or very low. The minute I get remote she chills. Only thing that worked.
Hi, always amazed by the work of you guys do! Noticed that when your dog heel's with you ,his ears are folded back and as soon as you are away from him, ears up paying attention to you. Mine does the same. Is it something wrong with that or it depends from dog to dog ?
Thank you 🙏🏼 Nope nothing wrong with that! I like my dog to be ‘at ease’ while heeling rather than a IGP style focused heel. If my dog’s ears pop up in Heel, that usually means something got his attention other than me 👍🏻
@@manueltaboadadetorres3399 Excellent question! Yes this style of heeling would not be desirable for IGP. But on the flip side, IGP style heel would not be desirable for French Ring! Ring judges are looking for a ‘natural’ walk. This is crucial to asses the dog and for the dog to be able to make it through an entire Ring 3 program. An interesting point: if you watch an IGP dog walk normally on leash off of the field, their ears are usually back, unless of course they are aroused by something (squirrel, dogs, people, etc) Ringsport sees an IGP heel as ‘unnatural’ and impractical. Don’t get me wrong, it definitely looks awesome! Just not suited for Ringsport. As far as the pressure goes, ears back CAN mean too much pressure has been applied BUT does not mean too much pressure HAS been applied. If you study my dog’s body language, it’s clear that he’s bursting at the seams with drive and performing with heart and enthusiasm. For example; a dog’s tail can be wagging right before they engage in play with another dog OR right before they attack another dog. So, tail wagging CAN mean ready to play but doesn’t necessarily ALWAYS mean that 🙏🏼
You mean the ‘free’ command? If a dog has very good heeling with a lot of experience I release them when appropriate. But a new/ young dog in training I completely separate structured walks from free walks 👍🏻
@@AndyKrueger got it. So free walk is what most people would do walking their dogs. Structured walk is training, in command, heel etc. do I have that right?
@@nimrodhenry9136 Oh no…you didn’t! Stubborn?? NO SUCH THING SIR! A puppy!?! 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️ If you watch my videos, you’ll learn that there is no such thing as a stubborn dog, just uneducated owners. hi, good nigth, i like the german shepherd dog and think in get one, i lke if you do a video with the whole basic commands in english, i dont want the dog for commpetition or protection, i looking for for a dog for pet but with a little of obedience, please if you do a video like this it be a big help, and i follow for more content for beginners owners, thank you and keep doing this videos, they are big help for anyone
You are the best
Haha French commands great but songs like an habit when you live in France or maybe Belgium, hello from Belgium, good job
Hey! Thank you!
Thank you
Easily your best video yet Andy!
Thank you! 🙏🏼
I like the leash behind the back because if the dog understands leash pressure, it keeps him in perfect Heel position.
Love the technique . 💪
Great training! How long do I keep my dog in his crate?
Sei bravissimo complimenti ❤
Thanks!
Yep, I’ve trained with Mike in the past. He’s a great guy and trainer 🙏🏼
How would you start to teaching the heel command is it just walking with the dog alongside you or what somebody
Luring 👍🏻
Your very passionate about dog training and that encourages me, keep up the good work, and I have a question, and I want to hear your take on it. I saw a video once of a dog trainer talking about when you tell your dog to sit you don't have to tell him to stay, because sit means sit until you tell your dog to either come or stand, what do you think about that?
Thank you 🙏🏼
Yes I agreed with the implied stay 👍🏻
I use an additional stay command bc it’s required in the sport I compete in.
Andy, at what point do you move to working your dog away from your home field? At that point, do you expect to need to back up your training to offset the distractions of a strange environment?
I train in many different places from day 1 🙏🏼
i have a belgian malinois, i he knows all the commands in this video, but i do you know how to make him less destructive?
Yes, you’ll have to make some serious lifestyle changes! Crate, train, supervised playtime, repeat! Don’t let him off leash free roam your house 👍🏻
@@AndyKrueger I’ll do that, thank you for your help
@@ryanlee7267 👍🏻👍🏻
Do you have any tips/videos of how you start an older dog with 0 training on basic obedience?
Many videos like this on my channel.
@@AndyKrueger I will go thru them when I get a quiet min.... hard to find with 2 Mals haha
Can I ask how you got the prong colllar fixed. It looks like the centre is round the side of the neck not the front.
@@AndyKrueger that's what i like most about you and the reason i follow you. you give people and dogs the opportunity to improve, but you also give them the space to go their own way.🤙🤙🤙
@@marioklein1533 🙏🏼
I am amazed by the dog, trainer but I don’t know if it is showing me how to get my dog to learn the behaviors and what you do if they don’t do what your trying to teach.
Thank you 🙏🏼
Yes these videos are not step by step instructionals, but rather guidelines for training 👍🏻
I enjoy watching your videos and always learning something new
So in your opinion are most all dogs trainable? Do you trust these dogs alone around babies?
Why do you add the “stay” command? Shouldn’t sit and down mean stay in that position until you release the dog from that position? Just curious.
Great videos one question why french?
First off, you have very informative videos. I do have a question. Why do you double command the dog? If sit means sit then why is there any need to command him to stay? Same thing with he down command.
Thank you 🙏🏼
I also like the concept of implied stay.
100 lbs. No known training, boarding
shelter last two months. Neutered. healthy strong, using lunge, voice, feeding 4 meals per day.
Yep I’ve trained poodles.
Sort of haha!
Hi Andy , Can you recommended any trainers in New Hampshire?
Sorry don’t know of any!
I am new too. Have a female Belgian Malinois 2 months and i need the full day of the dog broke down, 🙏
wake up?
Kennel time?
Water?
Food only for training at first
Also should i train in french, why not right?
Thank you 🙏🏼
Nope nothing wrong with that! I like my dog to be ‘at ease’ while heeling rather than a IGP style focused heel.
If my dog’s ears pop up in Heel, that usually means something got his attention other than me 👍🏻
@@AndyKrueger the ears back is seen in IGP as a sign of pressure on the dog, whats your take on that? Love your videos 💪
An interesting point: if you watch an IGP dog walk normally on leash off of the field, their ears are usually back, unless of course they are aroused by something (squirrel, dogs, people, etc)
Ringsport sees an IGP heel as ‘unnatural’ and impractical.
So, tail wagging CAN mean ready to play but doesn’t necessarily ALWAYS mean that 🙏🏼
How do you train such focused obedience without treats?? It seems like my dog always had adhd and absolutely no attention span when training
How do you train them not to smell around when they are in a stay?
Don’t build too fast
How would you stop your dog from sniffing the ground in a down stay?
I would first teach the word ‘no’, then use it in that situation 👍🏻
Hungary, szuper vagy! Csak nézem, de nem értem!
Question: When it comes to teaching rear end awareness, do you strictly teach that in the barrier, or do you do any of that on a touch pad?
Touch pads are good for rear end awareness for sure 👍🏻
is there a high collar you recommend?
Do you offer training that isn't for the competition feild?
Do you let him relax on a daily walk or do you have him in heel the whole time?
Wondering if that would be ok for my dutchie
You mean the ‘free’ command?
If a dog has very good heeling with a lot of experience I release them when appropriate. But a new/ young dog in training I completely separate structured walks from free walks 👍🏻
@@AndyKrueger got it. So free walk is what most people would do walking their dogs. Structured walk is training, in command, heel etc. do I have that right?
@@juandediosgarcia9606 yep 👍🏻
How long would you need to train a dog and be consistent for ?
Their whole life!
Mine is 2mts old when can I start heel command training?
Now!!
@@AndyKrueger thanks

Stubborn?? NO SUCH THING SIR! A puppy!?! 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
If you watch my videos, you’ll learn that there is no such thing as a stubborn dog, just uneducated owners. Saying ‘stubborn’ is blaming the dog/ puppy. It is not their fault that your attempted training methods are not effective. Having this mindset will set you up for a lifetime of failure and frustration with the dog. I think your training ‘ethos’ needs a MASSIVE overhaul! 🙏🏼🙏🏼
