Gotta give the Donnager credit. She took on 6 of the most advanced spacecraft ever built by humanity and she took out three of them before self-destructing and taking out the rest.
They had no idea what the stealth ships' capabilities were and yet managed to come out literally dead even. I would also assume that the Donnager's capabilities are more or less known by others relative to those stealth ships so basically it makes that feat pretty awesome.
She actually took out 4 stealth ships in battle.
One by torpedo, one by rail gun and 2 consecutively by PDC. Technically another 2 were also taken out by the self destruct.
Also most of the crew was either dead, wounded, or busy holding off borders from uninvited guests lol
The only thing that bothered me was that 2-3 much smaller ships had enough people to board and overpower the Donnager crew.
@@RashaKahn The thing is, in the lore, the 6 stealth ships were overloaded with crew, typically 150 members in each ship (vs 30-50 regular) with state of the art gear and all of the boarding crew were private mercenaries. The breaching pods are all stealth, and the stealth ships could get much closer than regular since they were stealth also.
The Canterbury may have been the spark that ignited the events of The Expanse, but the Donnager battle is what set the tone for the entire series as a whole. Many people may have gone into the show thinking it'll be another Star Trek/ Star Wars like sci-fi; just with more attention to accuracy. But watching this one battle unfold changes all of that.
In the Expanse, the good guys don't have some huge advantage from the rest of the universe; like superpowers or a best-in-class rank. Everyone is an ordinary human being in the wrong place at the wrong time. You'd think all the survivors of the Cant will be the main characters for the show, then Shed dies instantly. The Martians have a state of the art battleship, and it gets absolutely destroyed. Even the ship that the Roci crew calls home wasn't custom built just for them, it was salvaged in the heat of battle because their old ship, the Knight, was torn to shreds.
You mean the stolen Tachi?
hehe kiddin. :'D
Also you got that right, especially its world setting, its really good!
@@yalewaller5721 Jullie, Kenzo, Dr. Strickland, Fred Johnson, Ashford, Admiral Souther, Alex just to name a few. For crying out loud, Miller even died _twice!_
@@TheSpecialcorps 👏 LEGITIMATE 👏 SALVAGE👏
I love that someone has finally done a true supercut without any talking, however in my opinion the roci shaking from its moorings and shooting it's way out is a key part of the Donnager battle because of how cool it was... Please do a supercut of all rocinante battle scenes!
A roci battle supercut sounds perfect!
I think there are a number of them out there.
Amazing cut! The skirmish was exactly what I imagined when I read the novel as well.
I feel like this was the best rendered episode. I know some people complained that they couldn't see what was happening... but I wish the producers wouldn't have listened and brightened up the rest of the space shots in the show. Everything about The Expanse is about "realism" and the way this space battle was rendered looks more real than anything else I've seen in SciFi. Space is incredibly bright AND dark. This episode was beautifully executed.
Yeah, I've seen it many times and I still can't figure out what is really happening
@@RicardoDirani I think with the live scenes it made it pretty clear.
"Now there are six of them.... this is getting out of hand..."
i can believe the six ships could engage the donnager but i cant believe that their small boarding partys rapidly took over the donnager with 2k sailors and at least a battallion of power armored marines.
They were overwhelmed by a surprise attack and had weapons to suffocate the Martians. Thsie where the rail guns. Plus they hit the reactor, a lucky shot but a criplling one. Donnager was big and sluggish and less advanced for its size, but still defeated almost all of them, but not enough
also, this attack occurs during peacetime, make sense why the donnager doesnt any marines onboard. she was outgunned and outnumber... not much else it can do
@@kiedranFan2035 Still, highly unlikely that they could just take the ship in an instant
There is no indication the ship had it's full capacity of marines
@@wallecesembe2099 still, this is effectively a Chinese corvette boarding and taking over a U.S. aircraft carrier within 20 minutes of making contact.
Wow! I never realized how few shots of this engagement there actually were. You don't need a lot of action footage to create great moments. Writing and dialogue to build tension and create stakes is just as, if not more important.
i love how the epitome of technology in the expanse universe is stealth ships, which are commonplace in almost every other sci fi. Not only that, but they can only go undetected with their engines off
The most misunderstood battle of the expanse, most people keep saying those small ship where on a suicide run but there where not. Half on their plan was perfectly executed but the second half it's the one that fall apart
Anyone else miss this sound design? Everything is muted as if it's how it would sound from within the ship (no sound in space).
Sound gets a bit more cinematic in later seasons.
B+ for the muted effect. But not the missile whooshing by the camera. Should be totally silent. Even V2 rockets hitting London were silent from the POV of Londoners right up until the point of impact where they got the sonic boom and explosion all at once.
Yeah this sound design feels far more like you are _inside_ the ship, creating more of a claustrophobic/submarine atmosphere. The rendering quality is much higher in recent episodes but this sound design + low lighting has a far more oppressive atmosphere, in a really good way.
But the missiles sound like lasers for some reason.
I AM HYPE. the expanse is brilliant and I’m glad to see another RUclipsr that covers it (not saying I do but finding another one with another perspective is nice) I’ll be watching this in the 17hrs till it comes out.
I always found it weird that later seasons never had explosions like the Donnager. Surely the reactor failing like this is what happens to ever ship that explodes
it was a scuttle protocol. the Donnager had the reactor overload and blow so the ship couldn't be salvaged by an enemy. other battles the reactor safety protocols went into effect to increase the chance of survivors among the crew
@@toomanyaccounts I guess that's as valid an explanation as any. Still in the books explosions like this are constantly referenced when ships are lost.
00:40 hitting someone in dodgeball be like.
one thing that I am curious about. When the protogen boards the donnager it seems like they are able to overwhelm the crew - how many troopers could a corvette possibly carry to do that?
Half the crew was killed by vacuum, I'm more curious as to why the PDCs didn't shred the breaching pods and corvette as it came in close like that
It’s even more realistic with you speaker muted ( i tries it and it was still awesome , remember the donnager)
lets be fucking real: the main reason we all love this battle is The Donny's giant railguns firing
Excellent space Battle
Just wait. The Underground has three of these things. At least they do in the books.

All is good and great except for 1 minor detail.
*This is the space, and in vacuum you can't hear any sounds ffs!*
They do muffle the sounds in space a bit, to at least give a small sense of realism. But yes not having sounds would make it a bit boring so I'm fine with that.
The way I like to look at it is that the sound isn't coming from the camera, it's coming from the guns themselves, or at least what you'd hear if you were in the ship but couldn't hear the crew.
Agree, no matter the realism level, mute space battles would suck balls. Mute this video actually and you'll know. This and Battlestar paid a level of service to the fact by making the sound design a little muffled, but I personally prefer the punchier full on sound design of season 5.
For all intensive purposes you could be hearing each ships perspective, you will definitely hear your guns go off, shrapnel hit you, etc. Plus the general education that sound doesn't travel through vacuum is incorrect. Sound always travels through a vacuum it's just that it diminishes as particle distance increases, as sound is just particle vibration and is transferred through force interactions which never truly disappear.
