  • This video shows you how to create a bootable USB Flash Drive Mac OS X Installer. You will be able to boot most Macs from it and then install Mac OS X 10.15 Catalina without needing to re-download the installer for each Mac. You can also use it to format the internal drive of a Mac using the built in Disk Utility, this is also covered in the video.
    You will need a 16GB or larger USB Flash Drive, but 32GB is best (aka USB key). Make sure it's empty, because you'll be deleting everything on it during the process of making the installer.
    You will use a command in the Terminal. It is best to copy and paste it from here, just make sure you name your USB Flash Drive “MacInstall” (without the quotes). If you type it, make sure you type it correctly, or you will get an "unknown command" error. Here is the command for your reference:
    sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Catalina.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/MacInstaller/ --nointeraction &&say Done
    URL to find Catalina if it is not the current Mac OS and is not in the Mac Store

    how do you create that bootable usb drive when using Ubuntu as already installed OS on a macbook pro. and is it possible to have a dual installation for both Ubuntu and MacOS catalina installed on the same machine?
    thanks for that video, i like the pace of explanation

    There is a small mistake. The Flash drive is called MacInstaller and the terminal script refers to MacInstaller but the written instruction suggests you name the flash drive MacInstall.

    Thank you so much, sorry I’m just commenting here, need help! I use MacBook Pro mid 2009 5.5 and I just passed the terminal, I restarted my system as usual holding the option key, to install from my flash drive, and each time I tick on my Install Mac OS Catalina to boot, it always show me a grey 🚫 icon, which I have no idea why it gets stuck there always. Tried Dos1 method and still the same grey 🚫 result.

    Anyone get the installer files lately? The App Store etc only INSTALLS it, it won't give the option to download only.

    Hi, thanks for the tutorial but mine doesnt work. I keep getting this message after I type my password.
    /Applications/Install macOS catalina .app does not appear to be a valid OS installer application.
    Any ideas how to resolve this. Thanks

    When you use terminal and typed in that comand then it asked for a password. What would you do if you don't have a password? Cause I'm planning on replacing my hard drive in my iMac. So the HDD will be reformated and empty.
    What would I type in that password spot?
    Thanks.

      That happened to me as well. I noticed that I did not have the install macois file in the applications folder. So make sure it is in the applications folder or the terminal will not be able to find the media.

    please what do I do?

      When there is a "Command not found" error, it's usually a typo in the command. Check what you're typing carefully. It's case sensitive and even the spaces have to be exact.
