Everything PTX!! Even teaching littles how to count on Sesame Street! We Pentaholics have grown to trust PTX and their cello placement because you gotta trust a musician who can play cello AND beatbox at the same time! They write and arrange and work with Ben Bram. Mitch’s part is stellar here! Sing, New Years Day, and Happy Now are at the top of my favorite PTX originals list!

I forget which video I saw it in where they explained how they sit all 5 sit in a room once they pick a song they want to cover and they start working on a general arrangement starting with Kevin's percussion (beat boxing) , followed by the bass sounds , then they play around with the melody and harmony (bouncing ideas around and singing it out). They then record themselves (Scott records) with the general arrangement and send it to Ben Brams (the silent 6th member of PTX as they like to say) who helps tighten it up and adds the finishing touches. They then try out the arrangement and make any adjustments as needed. They are very involved in what they put out which just goes to show how passionate they are in the quality of music they put out for their fans. The inclusion of the Beyonce (the name of Kevin's Cello) is a deliberate choice depending on the song and whether they feel it adds value. Out of the hundreds of songs in their extensive catalogue (which is amazing as I don't recall a single year where they didn't release something since they won the Sing Off competition) , only 7 songs (that I can recall) included a cello (Radioactive had Kevin on cello and Lindsey Sterling on violin and their recent original Thank You had Scott on piano and Kevin on cello). I enjoy all the songs where they have included an instrument, as it is usually done so subtly, yet completed the sound without taking away from their voices. Thanks for your great reactions. Happy New Year and continued blessings. 😊

I listen to everything they do. I personally love the cello in this, especially when Kevin starts beatboxing. While most of the time I prefer it to be just vocal, because they are so incredibly talented, the cello adds more depth and emotion for me. I love the PTX cover more than the original. Kirstie just KILLS it in this. The first time I saw them in concert and Kevin brought out the cello, it was a moving experience to say the least. Keep the PTX coming!

You've been pumping out videos like crazy and as a ptx fan I just love watching reactions to kind of relive the songs and contrast my critiques.
You've asked a few yikes I'm guessing someone has replied but, PTX does all their own arrangements. They have a Grammy to that credit and is actually how they got their famed start in their journey in the acapella singing competition the sing off.
Great to hear what you think of their production.
I know I'm not alone in understanding what PTX really is... Personally I have been trying to fault them in some way regarding production. And I am not a musician. But if they are at their core able to simply synthesize this kind of material. Their voice isn't just power it's a real weapon. Give me billions give me status... I don't think I could ever feel as powerful as how some of these songs resonate.

I liked the cello here but I get what you’re saying. Personal preference!
I listen to both originals and covers. Run To You & Light in the Hallway (orig) are favorites of mine. As far as arranging goes, it seems a lot of the time they basically get in a room and start brainstorming & jamming until they like it. Then they record a first take version on their phone and send it to Ben Bram to get it on paper and weigh in w/any other ideas. I saw an interview where Scott said doing an original album takes several months, but they can knock out a cover album in a month or less which IMO is CRAZY considering how complex some of their harmonies & arrangements are. Here’s a video of them arranging-it’s fascinating. These guys are so damn talented. ruclips.net/video/XbxPnbC9vnk/видео.html

They all collaborate on the arrangement, but Scott and Ben Bram (the 6th Pentatonix, who's been with them from the beginning after winning the Sing Off competition). Another fact you should be aware of...Kevin is a classically trained Cellist (appeared at Carnegie Hall at 18), and plays 4-5 other instruments. Graduated Yale and accepted to their Medical School, but passed to join Pentatonix. Also speaks a couple of languages (including Mandarin). He's the Groups Renassiance Man !!

And I give them props for doing the unexpected. At this stage in their success thry can go off formula if they please and challenge the boundaries. In show business, music or acting or what have you, you can't remain stagnant. You have to grow and try different things. Personally I think they nailed it.

    ======================
During the COVID social-distancing situation, they arrange online via Zoom. Ben would screen-share the music sheet of the arrangement and members of Pentatonix would tell him or "sing" him their ideas.

There are definitely a couple weird chops. It’s odd since their videos are usually flawless. I love the cello and I love their voices. I feel like the cello overpowers Matt’s gorgeous bass a bit too much. If you react to “Say Something” they use the cello but it’s with Avi and they distribute the vocal solos a bit different. I love the cello in say something. In this one, it’s beautiful but it’d be beautiful without it as well. They are also night and day to the 2 new originals I've heard because for 1 Avi and Matt bring 2 completely different styles and 2 they are more mature! I also think that they are going for less edge and more of a pop sound because they don't have to prove themselves! I like it all it's all unique and all different! I know not everyone will like everything they make but that is ok 😊 in fact Kirsten wrote their new original Be My Eyes and it has a cool Enya Orinoco Flow/Sail Away vibe to it! The cello was required in this one, honestly. In order to keep the Duet between Scott and Kirstie intact, the cello fills the Baritone spot for Scott.

To answer your question in the beginning... I assume it's the original song that they cover: I mostly listen to their covers, not the originals ^^v

I love their originals and covers. I have no preference. As for the cello, I like its inclusion in the occasional song. Kevin is a world class cellist and I'm glad they make room for him to show his talent. I think some people don't give him the recognition he deserves due to his role carrying the beat with only an occasional lead vocal. Their arranging method usually involves the group spit balling every part of a song between them to see what fits, like a musical puzzle. Ben Bram is the arranger behind the scenes, but it seems to be a group effort. All their Grammies are for arrangement.

The click is Kevin as part of his beat boxing with his cello. And stop bad mouthing the video, for crying out loud.

I disagree with your comment regarding the cello, cuz I truly believe this instrument adds to the whole piece and does not take away from their singing.

You did not comment on Kevin who is doing something he apparently invented, called 'Celloboxing'. which is him beatboxing WHILE simultaneously playing the cello. Must be amazingly difficult to do, but Kevin pulls it off.

I listen to both original and covers. Original pieces are hit or miss just like any group.
I appreciate constructive criticism. Acapella is what has made them who they are. I do like the occasional cello, etc to showcase other talents, but if they begin to do it often, it makes them something else and I feel like that might be not as good as what they're known for.
