    I think Kevin had prerecorded some cello on his looper-you can see his pedal setup on the ground at his feet.

      I mean, maybe, i don't hear loops. when you see him use it in the video it is not looping, he is adding distortion for the solo the same way guitarists do.

      He's obviously using the pedal and changing the sounds. At some points you can hear violin like hits. Those have to be coming from the pedal.

    I don't think Scott is capable of singing the same thing exactly the same way every time! I mean, he is, but he riffs and ad libs and does his own thing every time! It's brilliant, because it means he's really in the zone of the song. That's not him playing to the camera, that's just Scott being Scott! This whole video just blew me away. And yeah, they have definitely been playing with pre-recorded stuff, even in their concert when they did I Rise.

      Totally agree about Scott. From the earliest days of Pentatonix he's been the most likely to go rogue (in the best sense of the word). The others apparently have fun keeping up with his improv moments, and know full well he keeps the audience happily wondering what he'll do next, and brings incredible energy to the show. If the other PTX members didn't enjoy it, he'd have stopped doing it long ago. It's like having that one kid in high school History class who asks questions from outside the textbook. Scott is NEVER boring.

    Agree 1000% about enjoying the song more when you can see who’s singing which part & their emotions! Kevin with that high note!!! The pedal board cord was stressing me as they all had to step over it. It’ll be 🔥 in concert! Thanks for the reaction Jacob!

      Me too! It looks like they’re up on a platform / stage and I was thinking “why can’t they run that cord under the stage”??!! Or along the side of the stage? It was making me anxious 😬

    • @jmarcuc
      @jmarcuc 8 месяцев назад +3

      That cord had me cringing when Scott was stepping ON it. When he gets into his full-steam-ahead evangelist mode (which is IMO his BEST mode), the last thing on his mind is harsh reality (like the chance of crashing to the floor.) Kirstie, OTOH was watching out for the cord, and stepping carefully ... in spike-heel boots, that's no small feat.

      It is a dig, with respect to a group that takes _great pride_ in not looping, using backing tracks, or autotuning (or when they do, using an OBVOUS setting, like full band backup for the Kennedy Center Honors for Tom Hanks), and we Pentaholics take it as an article of faith. Challenging their production ethics challenges that faith. They can do live what they do in a video, and it sounds the same. ANYONE who's ever seen them live (I have, 3x) can attest to that. They really ARE that good, but people are so jaded and cynical where it comes to production, they just don't believe it.

    Some of the best classic rock bands are ones where each instrument is soloing independently *even drums) to create a cohesive composition.
    That's the way I thought when I hear this. They have graduated to being able to do their own thing and still encapsulate the togetherness to form a song.
    Good catch. Great rxn

    This was crazy.
    I think they are the best music arrangers and have been for more than a decade now. Really can't think of anyone better.
    Also my brain is confused. We got a surprise Kevin Slap when we usually get a Mitch Slap.
    Matt also really sounds like Seal. This was great but would have liked to hear Matt on the lead more.

  • @CharlestonRat

    Speaking as a longtime PTX fan, I have noticed how they've embraced a lot of stacking and other effects to make themselves sound more full and add some diversity to their sounds. Their earlier music is a lot more raw, as if it'd sound pretty much identical live as it does in a studio recording.
    I respect their newer sound and that they won't want to do the same thing for their whole careers, but I admittedly do prefer most of their older work. Hence why (excluding the compilation stuff) my favourite tracks from their new album are "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)", "Pure Imagination / Christmas is Here" and "Little Toy Trains" - they sound a lot more like true acapella to my ears.

      @ruth2141 8 месяцев назад

      Having now watched the video several more times, I don't think they are using a track. I think Kevin has those extra string riffs linked to the low string of the cello. He goes for that low string every time you hear that high string riff. Kind of a minor distinction, but I realized it wouldn't make sense to use a recorded track for a live video.

    • @joebarnhart4460
      @joebarnhart4460 8 месяцев назад

      @@ruth2141 actually I think he's reinforcing the bass line at a lower octave than Matt can reach. I noticed him playing the bass strings during the low notes. I don't know if the string hits are linked, looped, or added but I don't mind. They add to thet texture of the song and it's all their arrangement so I'm OK with it.

    This video is labeled as "live" from the Vevo Live stage in LA. There are an entire series of videos from many artist also labeled as "live" and "produced" by Vevo on this stage. I do see that Kevin has a set of pedals near his feet which I have seen him use in his own videos to add extra content which he previously recorded. I think the term "Live" can be misused at times, just wondered if you know anything more about this type of production.

  • @joebarnhart4460
    @joebarnhart4460 8 месяцев назад

    I'm 100% with you. If they use accent tracks to improve their performance I'm down with it. It may be pre-looped by Kevin, or a synth triggered by a foot pedal. I don't care. It adds to the texture of the song.

  • @jmarcuc

    I think Kevin is looping in real time. Is that possible? He's got a foot pedal.

  • @cellokimmy
    @cellokimmy 8 месяцев назад

    I think it’s Kevin, but either pre-recorded or looped depending on the pedal setup. FWIW it still sounds like cello- high cello, but the timbre is different than violin or viola. That being said with reverb/ distortion etc. it probably wouldn’t be that difficult to make an upper string instrument have the fullness of a low string instrument.

  • @wilkvanburen
    @wilkvanburen 8 месяцев назад

    Just a thought, but he does looping a lot in his solo performances; is it possible he looped a small section (played it once in this performance, looped it in and is using it as backing)? He does that a lot.

    As someone who plays a guitar, you should know that you don’t have to go higher on the neck to achieve a higher note. Harmonics are the shortest route, and I’m reasonably sure that he knows it as well. I’m not saying that they don’t use tracks when recording, but wouldn’t it defeat the purpose of the “live room”? PTX has been making music for a while now, I think that know better than you or I, how to do it to get the best possible results. Great reaction!
