  • Requested by subscriber "Jack Carter", "The Dublin Minstrel" is a song written by Declan O'Donoghue and first performed by Paddy Reilly in fond memory of the late Luke Kelly of "The Dubliners".
I loved "The Dubliners" and collected many of their LPs up to the time that Luke passed away, but did not continue to collect after that, so this song is one I had not been aware of until I received this request a couple of days ago.

As the person who wrote the song (Paddy Reilly was the first to record it) can I thank you for a nice, sensitive version, it really is flattering that so many people continue to record and like this tribute to a very special singer. Cheers - Declan O'Donoghue

Declan, Thank you so much for your kind words. I have amended the information below the video to acknowledge you as the author. An honour to communicate with you sir. I once had the inestimable pleasure of dancing the "Dirk Dance of the Kings of Mann" at a concert at which The Dubliners headlined in the Palace Ballroom in Douglas, Isle of Man some sixty years ago, (before your time with the group), and fell in love with them and have been a fan ever since.

I think one video above all others show just how amazing Luke was; live in 1976 when he sang the almost un-singable Rocky Road to Dublin. He accidentally sang the second verse twice, but still managed to continue and to use looks and gestures to acknowledge his mistake, and to signal to the rest of the band to carry on playing, all while not missing a single beat!
