Thank you, Ellen. I'm a 78 year old lady with essential tremor and have just started painting some months ago. My florals have had a similarity to your first painting. You've helped me create a more vibrant, exciting painting. Your tutorials are so helpfuland support those of us who have never had the courage to try and try again with a paint brush until now! Thank you again for your help, support and your own wonderful talent.
Thank you for actually showing us techniques. I have taken many painting classes at our local art alliance, and have been frustrated because the instructors never share or teach actual techniques. I’m having to teach myself through videos, such as yours. Yours are THE best that I’ve found on RUclips. Thank you again!
I have watched this vid several times while attempting to paint these babies with your flair … not even close Lol but I will die trying! Thanks so much Ellen!💕
Your picture is stunning. I always try to watch really closely to note what your're doing with the color and the brush, and even the use of the pigment and shapes already laid down, to see how that effect is created, how exactly you used the tools at your disposal to create what I'm seeing, and you always demonstrate that really well. I appreciate how the palette and towel are in frame, because observing that process is important too, the color mixing and the amount of color/water ratio you pick up, and how much you're leaving behind on the towel. Most RUclips instructors I've seen don't do that, and I noticed early on what a detriment that was for a beginning artist. I remember thinking over and over again that I really needed to see what the instructor was doing off camera. So the point of this excessively long comment is to *Thank You* 🙏 for recognizing what we need to see and hear to truly understand this process, for it to really click, instead of just trying to memorize these concepts without comprehending, and how much faster we can progress with the kind of instruction you provide. I don't know if you still read the comments on these old videos, but the one thing that I thought would be even more helpful, is if you actually painted the 2 pictures, side by side and step by step (as much as you're able). Anyway, I feel so lucky to have found you, I was kind of in a rut, as all the other people I was watching were doing the same boring thing, But you are anything but boring 😁 Thanks
I can’t even begin to tell you how much I LOVED THIS ONE! Love the dramatic result, and loved seeing the techniques you used to bring it to life. Truly a gift to us all. Thank you Ellen.
Phenomenal! Please, Ellen, make more of these do's and don'ts... the way you did this tutorial is really student friendly :) Love your art and your interaction with the viewers!
Just got 2 new flat brushes from Zen and found you, I swear you tube heres my thoughts, You are a great teacher and funny too. Loose as a goose here having fun and getting results. Thankyou.
So glad you said what you said about intensity. I scolded myself, just yesterday, if you want intensity ya might as well. Just stick with acrylics. Well, I don't want to do acrylic right now. 😊 Now I know I was WRONG. I can have intensity with watercolor. THANK YOU RC ❤️
ALL the things in painting 1....yeah, I did those. Thank you for this great tutorial. I think part of your success in painting 2 is bravery, and a huge part is skill. I am learning more and more to pay attention to brushes used, motions used, and knowing how and when to make changes (dryness levels). Thank you!
OH MY... my paintings look like the first one... will try to do it fast and be more experimental.. and use a bigger brush. Thank you for this Ellen.. I have learnt a great deal..love you final painting.
Wow! I'm honored to be here with you. I've recently replenished my art supplies, and haven't yet restarted drawing and painting again. Since I see what you are teaching; I will return to my art while watching and learning from you. You had me at Hello with those lovely flowers!
This one of my favourite videos. I really like the contrast of how to do it 'as a beginner' and some simple techniques you can turn into a WOW painting. This video is going to make a BIG difference to my painting, I would like to see more tutorials like this on how to make a more professional 'Emma' finish. I have moved to a place where they have a great public park, where they have some really interesting plants, that I have never seen before and it would be fun to make a local floral painting from this with florals unique to the park
This was so helpful for me to see your process of painting abstractly! I love the “mushing” part. I love to do that too but you’ve inspired me to be more brave. Thank you so much for sharing!
Without knowing Color mixing about warm and cool shades we can’t just simply recreate this. You r super fast and feels easy but is quite complicated for a beginner. A good video on what and why Color’s to mix in the base Color
So much fun Ellen! Thank you! I’m a newbie to watercolor and I love the fluid rapidity of your strokes and the use of those flat brushes! Learned a lot!
Thanks, Ellen! I've been away from painting for a while, life stepped in and I got frazzled. But, stepping back, this is just what I needed to step back in!
I’ve always wanted to try watercolor but scared as it seems to be hard to manage, my son left a set which he only used once at school, this is very helpful and amazing, Im going to give it a try with this exact painting. Thank you for this video!!
I like the technical term of "smooshing" the paint! I've never tried an abstract painting, but this was a nice tutorial and jumping in point for me. The brush work with the flats looks a little tricky though. Thanks for breaking it down. I'd like to give it a go.
Abstract painting especially flowers is so foreign to me. I hope I can see more videos of how to paint abstracts with some basic techniques. Thank you Ellen!
Thanks Ellen. I never think to use my flat brushes, so getting comfortable with them is going to take some practice. Love the look of the ones on the right... so much movement! Great.tutorial!
Hello Ellen Crimi-Trent, I cannot believe that I've found a video which is showing exactly how to paint in a wonderful loose style. The twisting brush strokes using a flat brush seems seems to be the main secret, along with the depth of the pigment. I can't wait to try it tomorrow..it's the middle of the night now!. Thank you for your generosity. X
Love, love, love these blooms! Thank you for sharing all the great techniques Ellen. Loose abstract is difficult for me, and I can see why now. I’ll give my flat brushes another try. I recall working with them before on a snowman last winter and they worked great for creating a fluid, melting snow effect. Blessings to you!
Beautiful work Ellen. I can't wait to try this. You make it look so easy, but I know from experience with prior tutorials that there is definitely a gift and talent behind every brush stroke you make. I know this because I definitely have to work at it to make mine even come close to yours. Thank you so much for sharing this us!
What does “easy” look like? If you answer honestly “easy” is not something we see. “Easy” is your own personal judgement of someone else’s experience of their actions. How silly is that? Not just silly but mentally ill/delusional as it reflects reality in no way at all. It’s a pure fabrication of your mind that you’ve taken for reality of another being. To me this is disregarding the other person entirely.
Agreed. Buy the best paper, paint and brushes you can afford. Practicing with cheap supplies will be frustrating and you'll have to learn timing, how much water, etc all over again when you do get quality materials. Think about baking. If you bought the cheapest ingredients and substitutes, the end result would be disappointing.
Beautiful painting and demonstration, Ellen. I'm still learning how to paint flower and realize, I'm always facing the petals head-on. I definitely feel I can do better now. Thank you.
You are awesome. I tried your method of small holly berries and leaves and it came out rather good. But I was also looking for how to do larger flowers and suddenly here you are with my solution. This was fabulous training. Many thanks.
Thanks for showing this technique. I am trying to loosen up, this will be very helpful. Going to add that smaller flat brush to my stash and use the larger one for more than just wetting the paper!!☺🌻
I absolutely love this Ellen. The way you show the difference between the paintings but more importantly how to correct and get movement in the painting. Can’t wait to try this and find some more of your tutorials. Thank you

This is , hands down , the very best of the best instructions I have ever seen …thank you so so much
I like them both, for different reasons.
I do too. 🌻
That’s what I thought too.
You are really describing me. I keep on going trying to make it look good. Lol.
Thanks for the DO'S!!!!

Thank you, Ellen. I love this lesson!
I have watched this vid several times while attempting to paint these babies with your flair … not even close Lol but I will die trying! Thanks so much Ellen!💕
Me too!!!! 😂
I really like the touches of orange you added to sunflowers at the end… all the orange at the end intensified the whole painting beautifully
Your picture is stunning. Then again, watching the creation of atmosphere was pretty neat
