I'm really glad you guys ran this. Excellent commentary by the runners. You'd think a four-hour video would be tough but these buys kept it interesting the whole time.

Very good run! Didn't know Gyre, but Feasel and Puwexil are favs of mine. Great job (luck aside!) you guys! And again, awesome job from all the GDQ staff and community!
Kyzoku is actually a pretty clever translation - in the Japanese version, the pirates you fight for the ship are called Kaizoku, while the ones you fight on the water are called... Pirates.
31:31 So, what you're saying is that it is all ogre now? 2:21:32 It wasn't just fear, it was actual treats. The Beholder is one of the monsters that Gary Gygax (the co-creator of D&D) made himself without drawing form any mythological source, and TSR was and Wizards of the Coast is very protective of the creatures Gary made himself.
That's most RPGs, save for maybe Paper Mario for the 64. However there is the stair glitch in this game, but yeah most RPG speedruns have an EXP route to try and make the grinding as efficient as possible.
Wish I could have stayed up to watch this live. I played the hell out of this game as a kid, and I remember that trivia contest! I won a second place prize and I still have that hot pink fanny pack. It was the perfect size to haul around all of my Game Boy crap.
Tsunamidusher Same. I literally had to stop 30 minutes into the run so I can listen to the song. I will forever name my Red Mage and Black Mage JoJo and Leo.
I'd recently replayed FF on the NES Classic and finally beat it after never being able to before. Then I watched this run and felt humbled. But also learned quite a lot about this game. Like why my White Mage in Slot 4 could never run from anything. I yelled "are your legs broken?!" multiple times.
OneTrueBelmont yeah, I almost always played with a white mage in slot 3 and always just assumed wms were shit at running. I also learned why it always seemed like half my buffs did nothing noticeable, turns out they didn't
He's right about Fighter vs Black Belt... Until you cast FAST. When you cast FAST on both, Black Belt blows Fighter out of the water. Black Belt (Master) is the only character who can one-shot Chaos.
"The current record completion is 3 hours 6 minutes" I guess this is from before the game-breaking "stairs glitch" was found. Now FF1 can be completed in a matter of minutes.
Nope, that's been known for a while longer. It's also the Famicom version of the game, which is a different version to this one slightly. The FF1 US record was indeed 3 hours 6 minutes at the time of this run, whereas the FF1 JP record was somewhere around the 7 minute mark.
Not to mention, most games are usually broken up into three main categories: Any% glitched, Any% glitchless, and 100%. And the community decides the boundaries of each of those categories. So, even though this is the US version, it could be considered like a Any% glitchless.
milhouse46 dunno if it's what they have, but I'm pretty sure there was a late model nes that came out around the time the snes was coming out that was top loaded.
Chris Kugler yeah. they weren't as durable as the original so you don't see as many of them anymore but they put them out right as snes was launching. they basically made the nes look more like a snes.
Black mage is better low level due to early access of Fast, makes them almost mandatory to kill Chaos at Level 9. You hit level 10 and Red Mage totally outpaces in utility, Mute a boon for two early bosses on the NES. Tiamat first, usually do Kraken second, though Kary is often recommended second. Also, I finished Chaos off like that with 4 White Wizards at level 50. Granted, I savestated right before the battle, still took quite a few attempts. But, yes, it is a glorious end. Crit is still a stat for monsters, and it actually works properly (unlike char weapons)- it's just that a roll of 201/201 is always a hit and always a crit. So it's not that unless they crit, just if they roll the auto-hit, which just happens to also crit. Ruse is 80 evade & Invs is 40, thus 3 Ruse maxes evade regardless of level (240>201), or 2 Ruse and 2 Inv2 for 3 characters to max. So, if the RNG was true, it'd be less than a 1% chance of a crit. But, since it's a chart, it's actually a little higher (though most won't get to see it). And the 201 thing is something I've been chewed out about, so if I'm wrong, blame those who wrote some of the original faqs who corrected me.
Some people pronounce it differently. maz-uh-moon Mah-Sah-moon Mah-sah moon- a maz-uh-moon-a etc. There is no "correct way" since we don't know how it was pronounced originally.
Oh I see, it's misspelled in the NES version It's meant to be Masamune, meaning it's a sword by Masamune Okazaki, a legendary swordsmith So it should be mah-sah-moo-nay
Bl belts are shit until level 10. Then after you un-equip those nunchucks, the black belt becomes more and more badass every level up. With a run like this, i can see why they wouldn't use them.
How can one forget the potions buying??? Simply put, I bought a turbo controller when I was a kid SPECIFICALLY for FF1. Never used it for anything else than Pots buying.
I understand why they go through this play through avoiding all the tough fights (marathon safe and all), but it really cheapens the difficulty inherent to this game. I'd honestly have rather seen a less controlled play through wherein they had to deal with the hordes of undead and such that the marsh cave (among other dungeons) can throw at you. Granted the sheer amount and consistency of RNG manipulation on display was pretty awesome in its own way.
At that point might as well watch a Let's Play... Because RNG manipulation is a big part in speedrunning, especially in RPGs. But yeah, the amount of memorization and manipulation on display is impressive.
17:40 - Introduction
18:29 - Final Fantasy start
Man I can't imagine knowing THAT much about a video game. Ridiculously impressive
Absolutely incredible run. There were lots of great bits of information divulged, and that fight with Warmech was really something.
I'm really glad you guys ran this. Excellent commentary by the runners. You'd think a four-hour video would be tough but these buys kept it interesting the whole time.

Shop keeper: F*-* this, I'm getting an abacus.
Saw this live. It was one of the best GDQ runs I've ever seen. Great commentary, great runners, great game, and amazing routing.
Eric Owen not to mention the luck. I've done casual plays and not seen warmech go down that easy
Glad they finally did a full play instead of that BS one a couple years back where the guy just went up stairs for 9 minutes straight.
montelwiyums00 ikr and it didnt work :V
Gyre's knowledge about this game is just off the charts. Great to see him get a chance to showcase it, and get the unlikely Warmech kill to boot
I don't think I've ever seen such an impressive knowledge of an entire RPG's RNG in realtime.
Check the dragon warrior speedrun
@@Daosguard exactly. NESCardinality's knowledge of DW manipulations is crazy.
I've watched this a legit 20 times now.
and i guess you still revisit it like me to this day
This might be one of the best run/commentary combos of the whole 2017 event for me. Really well done!
"Paralysis is probably the most unfair thing about this game"
Boy, you said it.
Very good run! Didn't know Gyre, but Feasel and Puwexil are favs of mine. Great job (luck aside!) you guys! And again, awesome job from all the GDQ staff and community!
One of my favorite Final Fantasy games. Loved the thrill of going into a dungeon and getting out on your last legs XD.
I looked up the 4 white mage TAS. that final boss fight was amazing
Is it the one by AxeMan?
Yeah
*uses bane sword and instantly wins*
the frame manipulation in battles throughout that run is a thing to behold
Fantastic run. Always love watching the game get opened up like this.
So much info! Great Run in terms of entertainment and explanation! Please bring these guys back every year
can't believe gyre spoke at that fast pace for 4 hours on a single breath
This is a lot better than the Stair% run a year or two back.
Fantastic run with fantastic commentary. Good job to all. :)
59:30 "Poisonous Party Mix. It's like Chex Mix, but a lot less delicious."
On mobile the audio seems kinda low.
If by kind of low you mean virtually inaudible...
Win for me because I like to fall asleep to these 😴
1:42:36 That moment when your pun donation is read and everyone just accepts how bad it is. (:
In under 4 hours, god gawd this guy knows all of the tricks.
Mind Blown

This was a delight.

Ahhh yes. I too remember the marsh cave. I quit playing for a number of months before coming back as a kid.
0:41 i can't believe no one is talking about this
Ruse White Mage in Slot 1 is actually a really sick strat as far as keeping a Thief - Red Mage - White Mage - Black Mage party alive and healthy.
Haha, even in a speedrun, you need to grind to win in this game.
That's most RPGs, save for maybe Paper Mario for the 64.
However there is the stair glitch in this game, but yeah most RPG speedruns have an EXP route to try and make the grinding as efficient as possible.
i watched the stream this day for 7 hours waiting for this, 5 mins into the run my internet died until the next day, so sad
Their menu skills are insane
Wish I could have stayed up to watch this live. I played the hell out of this game as a kid, and I remember that trivia contest! I won a second place prize and I still have that hot pink fanny pack. It was the perfect size to haul around all of my Game Boy crap.
Run start: 18:27
I can't believe this game was made in 87'
All White Mage Run in under 5 hours? That sounds amazing.
What's the fiends' favorite band? Earth, Wind, and Fire, of course!
Headcanon: The ROD that Sarda gives you to remove the plate in Earth Cave B3F is a crowbar.
Prove me wrong.
I mean, it works.
I'm ashamed that, several times, the Duane and Brando Final Fantasy cover keeps popping in my head while watching this. Ha Ha
Tsunamidusher Same. I literally had to stop 30 minutes into the run so I can listen to the song. I will forever name my Red Mage and Black Mage JoJo and Leo.

Tip for next GDQs, TRIVIA QUESTIONS are very good ways to improve donations, I think =)
4:19:59 ? Got a second?
If anyone know where to buy that White Mage t-shirt he would have my eternal gratitude.
Massamyun. I used to say it that way, too, bro.
He's right about Fighter vs Black Belt... Until you cast FAST. When you cast FAST on both, Black Belt blows Fighter out of the water. Black Belt (Master) is the only character who can one-shot Chaos.
Just imagine Jackie Chan or Bruce Lee just smacking Chaos Garland into oblivion.
I wonder how nes classic version of FF handles the rng cycle
since it's a rom copy played by an emulator, I'm guessing the exact same way.
TheMusicalDork It's exactly the same.
"The current record completion is 3 hours 6 minutes" I guess this is from before the game-breaking "stairs glitch" was found. Now FF1 can be completed in a matter of minutes.

Finds a house in a chest, proceeds to joke about the arbitrary amount of money that is put there.
in the NES WarMECH has 1000HP and regens 2 per turn (broken) but in later versions he has 2000HP and regens 100 per turn
4:12:00 That was disappointing.
So... do you run from Catman because you don't want to see what Katmandu?
"This is another great thing you could do on a *CASUAL* run"
You keep using this word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
Is there a hack out there that fixes all the bugs of the original version?
What kind of hardware is this? It looks like a real NES cartridge in a top loader, but no way you can power off quick like that with a normal console!
At first I was gonna say it might be a Famicom, but then I realised how dumb that was.
milhouse46 dunno if it's what they have, but I'm pretty sure there was a late model nes that came out around the time the snes was coming out that was top loaded.
Chris Kugler yeah. they weren't as durable as the original so you don't see as many of them anymore but they put them out right as snes was launching. they basically made the nes look more like a snes.

Loved this. But if you had a black belt, Ive hit Chaos for as high as 2k damage. Monks can break the cap
GG!
i've been watching too much randomizer .. .i cant believe it was this slow
that run with the 4 white mages they cast fear on chaos until he runs away... haha.
3:46:00 Such a nail biter
Morgan James
3:35:28 DEAD
How can one forget the potions buying??? Simply put, I bought a turbo controller when I was a kid SPECIFICALLY for FF1. Never used it for anything else than Pots buying.
Francis Pratte lol yup. bung that sucker under something heavy enough to hold the button down and go make a sandwich
I have some real life trivia for you:
TNT is not dynamite. Two different explosives :D
I understand why they go through this play through avoiding all the tough fights (marathon safe and all), but it really cheapens the difficulty inherent to this game.
