hey.... Yeah, there I am. This was my first part-time job (not simply a summer job.) It was so horrible, but the CD-i training disc was the most memorable part.
Here's a wild one: I bought a "portable CD-i" unit back in the early 00's, it was early days of Ebay. No pics, I bought blind. It came brand new, in a plainish cardboard box with CD-i markings, and... wait for it... Wendy's markings on it. Dude sent some software also, but upon questioning he told me these were bought by Wendy's corporate for training purposes. Before anybody asks, I sold it in 2008 to a collector. There was no specific training software included, but it may indicate similar software for Wendy's.
That's what I was thinking when this was discovered. There's NO WAY this was going to be a wacky, fun actual game. The CD-I was made more to be a PC substitute that just happened to have those infamous Nintendo licensed games than a true console gaming system. I'll assume that they had some closeout deals for industrial use, too, making them more cost effective than actual computers. So yeah. A lame, not fun, chore of a trainee program was not a surprise at all.
Yeah, I seriously think almost nobody excluding hardcore video game and tech historians would even remember it now if it didn't have those Nintendo games.
@@mattwolf7698 It could have been a slightly cheaper alternative to a home computer at the time, but other than that it was unremarkable. My thin recollection of the machine was that they were pushing the educational/informational aspect and saying "oh, there's like some games too, I think." The in-store displays didn't even feature games, like the actual in store console set ups. Even with the Nintendo games, the only reason anyone even knew about them was due to sharing the FMV's, as no one actually bought them.
I love how this opens with an incredulous laugh. It really is so ridiculous - a training application for one of the worst video game systems ever. Which isn't fair, since it wasn't SUPPOSED to be a game system.
@@gracekim1998 " Sneak King " " Big Bumpin' " and " PocketBike Racer " were three video games for the XBox and XBox 360. They were sold at Burger King for $3.99 when you bought a Value Meal in the mid 2000s. I think they were some of the last physical media 'advergames'. After that companies went more into browser games for computers and digital games for consoles especially 360 which had a few Doritos games including the very fun Doritos Crash Course and its sequel Crash Course 2 as well as a Honda game called 'Yaris' which got very bad reviews.
I worked for McDonald's for a brief time in the early 90s and was shown this amazing what to do in a robbery VHS. I hope one day it surfaces cuz it was hilarious!

It almost seems like a VHS would have made more sense to release this on, I guess they needed the interactivity though. This makes you think though, there's probably thousands of lost training VHS's out there, granted most would be boring.
I worked at an Orlando, FL Burger King in 1998 when I was 16. I actually had to "play" this when I was hired. I had heard of the CD-i in magazines, but this was the only time I ever saw one in person. It had the awkward vertical controller and everything.
Back in 1996 I worked for the Burger King on 5th ave in Huntington WV and they used this. From what I remember it basically played a generic video and then asked you some pretty simple questions. Would think there would be somebody somewhere that would have a copy of this still.
I'm glad another person from my era remembers using this back then. It's the sort of thing that would easily get overlooked at the time and then forgotten... unless you're obsessed with weird old video game systems.
The McDonald's DS game wasn't the first one of its kind uncovered either -- there was also a training program for a hotel chain released on PSP, which RUclipsr Rerez covered some time ago. So yeah, not nearly as novel as all that! Still cool to see more of these found, though.
Okay, I call bullshit. WHO WOULD HIRE A BEAR?! Let alone a MOTHER bear! I mean, hibernation's it's OWN problem, but a MOTHER?! Are you TRYING to get your customers mauled?! All bears are the same. Yeah, I said it!
When I was a kid our local fire station had an open day and they had an cdi with some kinda interactive fire safety quizzes... found it boring but always remembered it cos I thought the remote was cool with the joystick.
The idea of a Burger King training game on the CD-I sounds absurd. Just as absurd as the lost McDonalds DS game from Japan. Oh and for found lost media part 2, you should mention Illumination Laser on the Sharp X68000 and Alltynex on the FM Towns.
That console sold so bad that most people that knows about more obscure game trivia don't know about the C64GS existing. Atari did something similar known as the Atari XE which had much better support that was based off the Atari 8-bit computers at the time. It helps that the Atari 800/400 had much more games released on carts than the C64.

it's easy to understand really, the CD-i despite its poor hardware capabilities, can render FMV's with really high quality (like a VHS), and it's interactive nature was suitable for something like short quizzes, just like nowadays they use tablets or just cellphones. It was expensive, but less than a computer back then.
