  • When a cow is having trouble calving on it's own, if an experienced ranch hand knows when to help her out and how, it can save the life of the calf.
When cows are brought into a barn in the winter, cleaning out the barn and putting down fresh bedding is an on going chore.
Not only does the whole herd doesn't fit in the barn, but also getting vitamin D from the sun is very important for the health of cattle. So, a rancher is constantly deciding who needs the barn the most, and setting up outdoor pens and pastures for the mama cows who haven't calved yet and the cow calf pairs who are ready to get back outside.
One of the main jobs on a ranch during calving season is checking the cows every hour or so (day and night) to see if there are any cows calving that need help, and to sort them off fresh calves and put them in a pens with their mamas. This not only helps the bonding process (knowing which cow is it's mama), but also makes it easier for us to keep an eye on them and make sure the calf has learned to stand and has figured out how to nurse before we put them in a bigger pen outside where the calf has room to run and play with other calves.
Work on a ranch during calving also usually includes setting up calf shelters, spreading out clean bedding, making sure each pen or pasture has a way for the cattle to water, taking feed to all the different groups, and setting out minerals.
Get a glimpse of what it can be like working on a ranch for a day during calving season!
Filmed at Lazy TV's North Ranch, mostly on January 30th, 2024, with a clip from February 1st so you can see how the calf is doing 2 days after it was born.

Always loved calving season. You have a great set up. It was a lot different when I was growing up but in CA we didn't need a barn there wasnt harsh weather where we lived. Hope the rest of the calving goes smoothly. God Bless

I like the way that you are gentle and calm with the pairs, they remember that and it shows in their demeanor.

Looks like there would be some great show steer prospects at this ranch. Perhaps they sell a lot of bulls too. You are one organized man! Great video.

Love seeing new life! Question- what is the orange dot/mark on the side of the cows signify?

We marked them shoulder, ribs, or rump based off if they’re early mid or late calving season. It’s a product like what people use to put highlights in their hair. That way we can mark the Cattle and it will last until they shed out for the summer. That way, it’s easy for us to sort them off into different groups so that we can keep them near the barn when it’s their turn to calve.

Why don't you put straw down for your cows ???

Not sure what you mean, but every group has a bed pack made with either corn stalk bedding, or straw we always put out enough of the whole group to have in one spot if they choose. But it’s not practical for us to put straw over every square foot of the ranch. Bedding is one of our daily chores. If you watch the whole video, you will see. Corn stalks can be better than the straw because it’s more absorbent. An example If you watch the part of the video where we set up for the balancer pairs, there’s wind brakes and a straw bedding set up for them, but there’s also dirt that they can walk out onto the calves learn quickly to bed down in the bedding. At the end of the video, you’ll also see us, Reed, the barn, same day that I pulled the calf. it’s not uncommon for the bedding to be soiled and to constantly be adding fresh bedding. When the cows are in for the night, it starts out as fresh, but it might be soiled by morning like when you see me pull the calf.
