I was a tree planter in British Columbia for a long time. Up in the mountains around Arrow Lakes one summer, never saw so many ticks (some reason the girls chose me to do the daily inspection at the shower tent-verrry interesting cuz there’s two female places where ticks go that men don’t have). One afternoon me ‘n’ my buddy Bruce were taking lunch on a big, flat rock outcrop about 150feet in diameter-and we were sitting right in the middle. I thought I felt something hit me-like a little pebble or something. Then it happened again. Finally I saw something hit Bruce’s long, bone-straight hair and fall to the rock below. I picked it up. It was a tick. We were looking at it very up-close cuz neither of us ever heard of a flying or jumping tick. It was flat like a tiny empty hot-water-bottle-empty of blood they feed on. We were just talking about how long they can live between blood meals-about 17 years, I heard someplace. Then, as we were watching it very, very up close we both saw it roll up its flat abdomen -like rolling up a magazine-never saw THAT before, either-and then it just vanished, quick as a wink. We realized it had unrolled itself at super high speed and basically sprang right outta sight. So that’s how an empty tick can jump you from, I imagine, dozens of feet away. Everybody on that crew was bitten by hundreds of ticks each before we got the hell outta there! So watch out for them jumping ticks. Remember: it’s only the ones that haven’t eaten for maybe up to 17 years-although I expect they get pretty weak by then. Good luck!

when I rode the rails in the 80s we used to make little fires in tin cans with twigs to heat water for coffee. For a larger fire, a steel garbage or oil can could be used with some modifications. We would put a flap in the bottom of the can and one on the rim, open them both and flip upside down. Base becomes a cooktop, rim flap feeds the fire, bottom flap is the chimney. Making sure the fire is hot enough to not produce smoke, we were able to conceal the light by aiming the flaps away from sight lines. A tin can even let us cook in a moving box car with splinters for fuel, enough for coffee anyway.

Awesome video my brother!!!'
Thanks for the videos and the stories Shoestring !! New to the channel and lovin' it man. i am an avid Lynyrd Skynyrd fan and I was wondering if you ever heard their version of the Railroad Song? I know you love the Johnny Cash version of Hobo and who doesn't but give Skynyrd a listen too RVZ sings about a Hobo's struggles...I bet you would like it !! My wife's' Dad did a lot of maintenance work at the Hoosac Tunnel in the 70's and early 80's we loved the video you had of going thru that region of western Mass !! I think it was the B & M Railroad ( Boston and Maine ) back in the day ? You are the best story teller and the Q and A was a great addition as well to some other videos, I'm sure that many of us love when you sit back by the bucket and start the stories......be good and keep the videos coming....please:)
Shoestring I would recommend checking with the laws of different states that you travel through to find out what the laws are concerning possessing a stun gun and I could be wrong, but I've heard there may be repercussions if you used it on somebody who had a heart problem and they passed away. If that were true you might be better off with a concealed carry permit, but then again each state has their own laws.

You and hobo stobe are the best at this kinda content. RIP to stobe. Your videos remind me of his. Love this kinda content. Always wanted to hop on a train here in Jacksonville FL and take it down to south Florida.
Me and a friend hopped a train going out of houston it started going a little fast so we had to jump off right then or no telling how far we would of had to go, so we jumped off took about three long strides then ate it, we hitch hiked back, just young and got a wild hair , good times.
Shoestring I love the videos. just stay safe out there. I don’t know whats the odds of a train you wanted to ride ends up derailing, good thing you weren’t on it when it did.
Lol, I find it humorous when the young pupps try to fool an old head. But anyways, Have a great ride my friend. Glad to see you looking healthy. God bless.
Just to let you know and I'm sure that I already told you if you ever blow through Altoona pa let me know. We can go. Check out the coke furnaces up at the horseshoe curve. And I'll cook ya up some good grub before you roll up and out.
Excellent video brother. Though most would consider your situation to be unfavorable, I on the other hand, find it to be a good thing. Had the police officers not stopped you and talked to you. That could have led to you getting caught catching out. We all know that is not a good thing. Also, you could have been hurt or worse had you been on the train that derailed. Stay safe and drink water!!!!!!!
I agree, if the police hadn't stopped him he might have either been on that train, or been in that area when it derailed. Either way, it led to him going further down and away from the danger.
The first time I tried to jump a train was in Blanchard Louisiana. It was done changing the spur and rolling about 12 miles an hour, I was standing there and reached out to grab the latter, that silliness about yanked my skeleton right out of my skin. Threw me in the rocks and my flip flops were out in the brush. We just needed to get into Blanchard for cigarettes and walk back. Never made that mistake again. Good luck out there and God Bless.
RIP, Mark One evening as the sun went down And the jungle fire was burning Down the track came a hobo hikin' And he said, "Boys, I'm not turning I'm headed for a land that's far away Beside the crystal fountains So come with me, we'll go and see The Big Rock Candy Mountains "In The Big Rock Candy Mountains There's a land that's fair and bright Where the handouts grow on bushes And you sleep out every night Where the boxcars all are empty And the sun shines every day On the birds and the bees and the cigarette trees The lemonade springs where the bluebird sings In The Big Rock Candy Mountains "In The Big Rock Candy Mountains All the cops have wooden legs And the bulldogs all have rubber teeth And the hens lay soft-boiled eggs The farmers' trees are full of fruit And the barns are full of hay Oh I'm bound to go where there ain't no snow Where the rain don't fall, the wind don't blow In The Big Rock Candy Mountains "In The Big Rock Candy Mountains You never change your socks And the little streams of alcohol Come a-trickling down the rocks The brakemen have to tip their hats And the railroad bulls are blind There's a lake of stew and of whiskey, too You can paddle all around 'em in a big canoe In The Big Rock Candy Mountains "In The Big Rock Candy Mountains The jails are made of tin And you can walk right out again As soon as you are in There ain't no short-handle shovels No axes, saws or picks I'm a-goin' to stay where you sleep all day Where they hung the jerk that invented work In The Big Rock Candy Mountains "I'll see you all this comin' fall In the Big Rock Candy Mountains
R.I.P. Shoestring. I'll miss riding the rails with you, sir..

I learned a trick in the Army. Ticks prefer to crawl upwards. If you sew a small band of fabric onto the legs of your trousers, leaving the bottom unsewn, the ticks will crawl up to the band then get stuck in between it and your trousers. For some reason they do not have the sense to crawl back down. Works on sleeves and your mid section too. You can then remove them with ease. Good luck shoestring glad to see you happily chooching along.
Never heard of that trick before and I've been plagued by woodtex for almost seventy years anybody else ever heard of that band for keeping ticks off?

Ah, like a screen-like fabric that would cause them to crawl back down to cross and crawl back up thus giving up

Wow, it's been quite a spell since I saw one of your videos. Really was beginning to miss you. I kept looking, expecting to see one, but, nothing was getting posted. Then I went on line and there you were, practically the number 1 video in the line up ! Funny thing is, you tube never posted your video in my notifications, just thought I'd let you know, and I clicked on the "all" button too! Anyway, its good to have you back!!!! Awesome video my brother!!!'
So happy your happening, Shoestring. 💕 hitchin a ride with you in your camera view. The world awaits in a hobos knapsack 😊. Great journeys to you🚂

safe travels Shoestring! Love watching your trips
Oscar Nominated video Sir! Thanks for sharing, be well, be safe.
RIP… You will be missed!

I JUST WATCHED THE STOBE MOVIE AND HE POINTED OUT YOUR TAG IN NEBRASKA!!
MIND BLOWN! 🤯
Exactly but he breaks the law constantly train hopping and trespassing so I doubt much would bother him in the way of manslaughter
Saudi Arabia , man sometimes you say things that are soooo unexpected, u are sooo funny at times u make my stomach hurt, ooooMan , ive been watching u for years now & i hadn't watched since you had the operation and there was a thumbnail that i thought said u passed away. Nice video man. Glad you missed that train that derailed. How do you know if a train is running local or not? Thanks and take care. 👋👍
You and hobo stobe are the best at this kinda content. RIP to stobe. Your videos remind me of his. Love this kinda content. Always wanted to hop on a train here in Jacksonville FL and take it down to south Florida.
Rip shoestring
Hi Ho Shoestring. Glad to see you out and feeling better.
I follow your trail on my map whenever you mention your location. Ride on Brother!
Me and a friend hopped a train going out of houston it started going a little fast so we had to jump off right then or no telling how far we would of had to go, so we jumped off took about three long strides then ate it, we hitch hiked back, just young and got a wild hair , good times.
The Lord works in mysterious ways, even through young rookie cops.

Hey shoestring welcome back. Love your video. Keep them coming. Be safe out there.
Good to see you going strong brother. Stay safe out there.
Shoestring I love the videos. just stay safe out there. I don’t know whats the odds of a train you wanted to ride ends up derailing, good thing you weren’t on it when it did.
Be careful Hobo.
RIP Mr "Shoestring", wish you were still with us.
I miss you already !!!
God Bless You Mark !!!
I think I even Love you !!!
God works in mysterious ways
The first time I tried to jump a train was in Blanchard Louisiana. It was done changing the spur and rolling about 12 miles an hour, I was standing there and reached out to grab the latter, that silliness about yanked my skeleton right out of my skin. Threw me in the rocks and my flip flops were out in the brush. We just needed to get into Blanchard for cigarettes and walk back. Never made that mistake again. Good luck out there and God Bless.
It's a tough life but rents in my area start at 1,600a month so you need 5,000 to move in.
RIP, Mark
One evening as the sun went down
And the jungle fire was burning
Down the track came a hobo hikin'
And he said, "Boys, I'm not turning
I'm headed for a land that's far away
Beside the crystal fountains
So come with me, we'll go and see
The Big Rock Candy Mountains
"In The Big Rock Candy Mountains
There's a land that's fair and bright
Where the handouts grow on bushes
And you sleep out every night
Where the boxcars all are empty
And the sun shines every day
On the birds and the bees and the cigarette trees
The lemonade springs where the bluebird sings
In The Big Rock Candy Mountains
"In The Big Rock Candy Mountains
All the cops have wooden legs
And the bulldogs all have rubber teeth
And the hens lay soft-boiled eggs
The farmers' trees are full of fruit
And the barns are full of hay
Oh I'm bound to go where there ain't no snow
Where the rain don't fall, the wind don't blow
In The Big Rock Candy Mountains
"In The Big Rock Candy Mountains
You never change your socks
And the little streams of alcohol
Come a-trickling down the rocks
The brakemen have to tip their hats
And the railroad bulls are blind
There's a lake of stew and of whiskey, too
You can paddle all around 'em in a big canoe
In The Big Rock Candy Mountains
"In The Big Rock Candy Mountains
The jails are made of tin
And you can walk right out again
As soon as you are in
There ain't no short-handle shovels
No axes, saws or picks
I'm a-goin' to stay where you sleep all day
Where they hung the jerk that invented work
In The Big Rock Candy Mountains
"I'll see you all this comin' fall
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains
Glad your ok and the cops were reasonable. You respect them and it pays dividends in the long run.
Will pray for Betsy on my bed time prayer. Stay safe friend.
How do you wipe your butt when you're riding a train
Keep on rolling my friend! Be safe n stay wise!❤
