    Here in Thailand, when the winds drop below 8 knots, which they frequently do, we sometimes use a normal surfboard instead of our twin tip. Takes some time to get used to it, and it's not nearly as much fun as a twin tip, but at least it gets us out on the water with only 6 or 7 knots and a Flysurfer Soul 18.

    • @OurKiteLife
      @OurKiteLife  4 года назад +2

      Nice! We’ve hopped on our friend’s directional board in light wind and it definitely gets you going in lighter wind than a twin tip. Door style boards will also do the trick, but not as fun :)

      Thailand can be tricky, kiting out in Jomtien at Blue Lagoon Kitesurfing school flysurfer souls on foils are popular at anything from 10 knots. What I have found is that because of the Tempreture in Thailand the air is not so thick. In the winter in Texas 15 knots on a 8m soul is way overpowered foiling with the Moses 635 wing, in Thailand this would be comfortable.
      So I can kite at 6 knots with the soul in the state's in cold weather( have not owned the kite long enough to kite here in summer tempretures)
      Have kited in Northern Western Australia in 12 knots @ 38 degrees c with a 12 meter and lacked power.
      My point is that different locations Tempreture and air density make a.big difference.
      I would much prefer kiting in Thailand in that warm water than donning my wetsuit, beanie and gloves to go riding.

      Mike, where in the Kingdom of smiles are you kiting?

    • @mikes_machines
      @mikes_machines 4 года назад

      @@MrCheznie Type in “Paknam Prasae Kiteboarding Club” into Google Maps search box and you’ll see the exact area I kite in. We newbees love the area as the water depth ranges from knee deep to about 1.5 meters for about one full Kilometer out from the shore, making it easy to just stand up and go again after a crash landing. The beach is part of the local/city owned Prasae Park which has food vendors, indoor restrooms, and park benchs, all making it an ideal place for all-day kiting. The beach runs east-west, so all summer long we get on-shore winds from the south. Winter is the low season as the winds are frequently out of the North and therefore off-shore. The down side of this location is that it sits at the mouth of the Prasae river which turns the otherwise crystal clear ocean waters somewhat brown and silty.
      Once or twice a year my wife (whom also kites) and I will travel across the Bay of Thailand to HauHin and Pak Nam Pran as the Northerly winds are on-shore in those locations. I also recommend Thong Sala Beach, in Kho Pha Ngan which also has an expansive area of waste deep water,…but avoid the ocean bottom starting at around 1 Kilometer from the shore as you may run into spiny sea urchins; you do not want to step on one !!
      One place I want to go, but have not yet been is Phuket (pronounced “Poo-ket”), friends of ours recently returned reporting wide sandy beaches perfect for launching and landing our Soul kites and shallow waters for several kilometer out from shore.
      You can contact me through Facebook, search for, Michael Murray and choose the one with a FlySurfer Soul on his home page.

    My top tips:
    - big board, when others are on 17m kites I get a lot of mileage out of a 12m and what you might consider a beginning board....
    - live as close as you can to the beach, ideally a few mins!
    - don't have kids, they just ruin your kiting (although I wouldn't have it any other way and I'm sure I'll get time back later in life!)
    - if all else fails emigrate to New Zealand, choose Wellington!

    • @OurKiteLife
      @OurKiteLife  4 года назад

      Funny thing - we were thinking about Wellington as it is super windy city apparently, 30 knots very often I hear, makes me wonder why they don’t have KOTA there?

    Great videos, I like it! Can you also make a video how to decide which kite size to use in which wind range? I started the past year with kiting. So far I' ve just bought one 15m North Juice 2018. As more often I see your videos, I think it was a wrong decision to go with the north, instead to buy a Flysurfer. By the way, I coming from windsurfing!

    • @OurKiteLife
      @OurKiteLife  4 года назад

      Hey, thanks for the suggestion - we will definitely try to include that in an upcoming video! We used to fly large North LEI kites before switching over to Flysurfer kites. Nothing wrong with those kites, especially when learning :)

    Good video ang tips. Why do you use only foil kites, or Ontario lake seldom has a good wind?

    • @OurKiteLife

      Ontario gets a lot of light wind days so yes, that’s one of the reasons why we prefer them. That being said, we also enjoy them on higher wind days too!

    Any suggestions on wind meters? We have a tower in the middle of the river that would be perfect for monitoring wind but it would need to be solar (or wind?) powered since it would be a standalone system or couldn't be placed/retrieved for each session

    My 18 M torch needs a minimum of 8 miles an hour to even fly that kite. at best I could have a downwinder with that low of wind. My torch is also a 2007 so maybe they're a lot better now? You guys are diehards more power to you

    • @OurKiteLife
      @OurKiteLife  4 года назад +1

      Ya the large inflatables and foil kites have improved a lot since 2007, but getting out in 8 mph is still pretty good!

    Thanks for your great videos , I have question for you what type of drones you are using to video ( I guess this is water resistant drone ,and can stand winds more ) and if is also capable for autofocus mode , I really appreciate if you gave any recommendations or suggestions to buy an new drone for kite surfing , thanks

      Hey Tamer, we have dji phantom 4, and the footage in this video from the snow storm was shot by a fried with a mavic. I advised against flying it in the snow as it can fail as drones are not water resistant.

    This Weather Station is only a few meters range, so whats the point if it doesnt have mobile network?

    • @OurKiteLife
      @OurKiteLife  4 года назад +1

      The range on the weather station that we bought is officially 300 meters. Unofficially, up to 7 kilometers. It uses 700mhz wavelengths I believe. Our sensor is placed 376 meters from the hub in the open. Also there will be a mobile network enabled station coming out soon, called Tempest. Let us know if you have any questions with regard to it.
