As a beginner I often kite in 9-12 kt where I live and as one of the simple tricks is to start is first move your kite to opposite direction. For e.g from 12h to 10h and then dive from 10h to 16-17h so the kite will run through more power zone and pretty much will always provide enough wind, or just instantly do a down loop while starting down wind and then change direction to upwind. But the trick you showed today is amazing and really would save me from crashing the kite in the past. Thank you, Damien!
Damien great presentation bro I just had knee surgery and wanted to keep up with my light wind techniques. Your detail on knot settings especially the depowered setting opened my eyes on back stalling. I can’t wait to get better and back out there. Thanks again Damien keep your videos coming.
Excellent tips! Couple more I've used: 1. If launching on the beach and it starts to fall - run upwind to create apparent wind and get the kite flying. 2. In the water point the board more downwind on the water start. 3. With foils on land, I've pulled the two center lines at the same time with one hand repeatedly, and it will jelly fish upwards. 4. Concentrate on making corrections early when the kite gets out of position before it gets to late to do anything. Thanks Damien!
Great tips Damo! We needed all these tips tonight in 7-9 knots on the lake. Would love if you did a video on advanced efoil tips. Things to work on, practice, etc.
Great addition to any light wind proficiency! I've learned more kite skills on light wind days than ever on a high wind day. I think people overlook this when beginning. That being said, I need to practice my downloops! Thanks!

Amazing stuff man, this is something that every kiter should learn in the first 2 years of kiting learning, it's crazy how many kiters with over 10ys experience out there that don't ever loop their kite.
Thank you great video. Just started foiling and never done so many light wind relaunches! whilst I downloop in light winds for power I had never thought about doing one in that situation.
I downloop a lot in lightwind transitions, but not so much in 'game over' situations. It was usually not really game over for me as i learned grabbing the front lines as high as possible and pulling in hard would usually shoot my kite back up to 12. This saves the kite from going in the drink which was my main priority, but after watching your video I will definitely be thinking of downlooping in these situations in the future. The loop also saves the kite and maybe generates controlled power i can work with to continue on right away... Thanks.

Hey Damo, I need your expertise again :) I now have three Switchblades 2021 (7,9,12) and I want to buy a lightwind board. What size for the Stylus Board would you recommend? I am 1,80 m and 75 kg. Is there a big difference between the 2021 vs. 2022 version? Best regards and thank you so much for helping me. Philipp
Happy to help no difference worth having to buy 2022. I would go with 150 for the ultimate ease and fun for your size. If you are purely looking for the best in light wind 160cm. 150 can be a little more fun, my thoughts.... 160cm will be a hair better in lighter winds more surface area..... Have the best day!
Damien, thank you for your knowledge and experience. You packed a lot into that one! I do have a question regards your depower lines, you have a further out knot, a middle one, and one further in, if I’m seeing it right, it looks like you tied into what seems to be (extension lines)?? To your kite? On my kite do see three points to tie into my steering lines, on the far edges of the kite, I see 3 anchor points, I feel that’s where you’d tie, further out, and if you’d choke up, the closest one in, you’d get more turning power I believe, when you have a moment, could you help me out? thanks for your time
Excellent downloop demo! If you can fly your kite and keep it up on air with very light wind and small TT, how to then manage to move upwind? (As with « on shore » wind/ beach). I always struggled to do it properly on poor windy days with max size kites, even with extensions...🥴and would appreciate your advices on it!😎
Nicolas, It takes time to get efficient to get going up wind but I would recommend a bigger board if you do not have one? On big kites in light winds it will make it a lot easier as you will get more leverage into the wind on a kite that pulls so hard. boards like the Stylus or the master door with Spleen.
Damien, I well understand your kite size point, and indeed I often use a Tiki of 2.10m length. 😎 My very question is with any board or kite which was acceptable but minimum to ride upwind with the wind at your starting point, what to do to come back to your upwind starting point if wind collapses significantly , or big tide current reduces the usable wind??? 🧐 At this point you can only play with your gear, its setting, your board... What is the more efficient technique to still move upwind : Try to move the kite very quickly or very slowly, or with small figures of eight between 11 and 12 or large figures between 9:30 and 12 , or move as less as possible at what kite position or anything else???. Edge hardly or only a little, pull the bar, manage with small push and pull during figures of eight... more or less trim, compared to normal adjustment ...sliding tack or jibe with downloop...🤓 I am often lost and eventually pushed to long walk of shame🥴
@@nicolasboudet9302 Nicolas, When the wind comes down, that is Mother Nature in control and there is nothing you can do! You will have to do the walk of shame! :) Or self rescue sometimes. I can not tell you how many times I have self rescued in.... Not much you can do!
Thank you Damien! If you cannot give me a miracle solution, at least I can see than I am not alone to practice long swimming to bath or clean my kite, long walking along beach to breeze it, or frequent self rescue in order to improve my shoulders dexterity in deep water and eventually my efficiency to dismantle the knots 😜
The biggest weapon for lightwind is a softkite... Flysurfer Soul 18/21m, Ozone or Duotone Capa. Even the biggest LW LEI Kite is much heavier than a softkite.
Thanks for the tips, really well explained and great use of the camera from all points of view. Could you also make a similar video for using a kiteloop?
@@DamienLeroyRUclips Absolutely friend. Obviously the kiteloop has it's benefits for boosting and such, but I have also seen it used in light winds as an alternative to the downloop for example in a waterstart. An explanation of how and why you'd employ a kiteloop versus a downloop in that type of situation would be awesome!
@@heathluke69 Honestly its exactly like the down loop. All depends on what side the kite is on in the wind window and what direction you are looking to go! Its just like this video but loop it down or back in the opposite direction if needed. Really you can go either way download or back loop but always have it diving down generate the power to pick you up and ride away in the light winds....... Have the best day !
Thanks for your video. Can I ask your advice that I got a 12m rebel and want to kite in a light wind about 7 ~ 12knot, would you suggest get a bigger board or just get the foilboard, thx
A bigger board size will help a ton! A larger kite helps but also gets hard to steer in such light winds and its a little heavy so does not fly as easy!
@@DamienLeroyRUclips thank you. Makes perfect sense and was what we used to do on a sailboat during races with super light winds and using smaller sails that were more efficient as far as retaining the proper foil shape versus the lighter super big sales that would just flop around more. Thanks for the help
My beginner status isn't that long ago, I actually never found longer lines easier for learning. Personally I found more reactive and direct a lot easier. Yes you have more time but you need to 'predict' the reaction since it's slower. I still prefer lines up to max 24m, however with some more experience now longer lines are usable for me. While I had lessons I had one or two light wind days, found it really hard and frustrating at first but at the end I learned a lot about flying the kite. I was lucky it was knee deep water, so no swimming 😋
Great tips - I also had to learn all that by experience. However - bodydragging on your belly on a beach seems a bit to intense for me. Maybe because my home spot is 2x2 km of shallow water... ;)
this is fucking gold....I just had that experience last week. It just kept backstalling on low wind and then an instructor, which I asked for help, handled it with ease, but he was constantly looping it when he started losing a bit power, but I did not understand the mechanics.
Thanks for the video. I have 12m and 9m Drifters. Which one do you think will fly in lower wind? I can usually water start on either one on the foil, in around 10 knots but struggle to keep the kite flying in less than that.
I would rock your 12m Drifter, its fast and light in the sky! Perfect for super light wind foiling. It will have a hair more low end for you than the 9m... Work on the downloop and you will be riding the whole time! :)
When you were demonstrating the foil water start at the end of the video it looked as if you were intentionally stopping the kite downlooping twice just to stick to the beginners' lesson. It looked as if twice downloop would have get you going immediately in those super lightwind conditions. Were you?
If it real light and you have to keep looping it sure! Most of the time a down loop will do it but if its very light I may go into another if it was not quite enough to keep power in the kite at all times.... Yep.......
Out of curiosity why do you downloop by pulling on your black line when you're on your foil instead of the white one? I always start the downloop on the opposite side I want to go.
Friend, You can loop a kite back or forward in light winds but usually when you need it is when the kite is falling down so you want to keep the fall going and generate speed with the kite then loop it back into the power window..... Hope that makes sense....

Can someone provide a perspective on kite loops and the steering lines slack? If on the less powered knot, more slack steering lines, slower loop turn, slower loop, more power? Shorter steering lines, quicker loop? I got contra 1s
Yes if you are depowered and your lines are more slack the loop will be slower, could potentially put it into a more power zone do to not turning as fast. Everything can be adjusted depending on how you set it on the kite depowered or powered, with your depower bar adjustment right before you loop. Helps even out the line tension.
@@DamienLeroyRUclips thanks for reply. I assume it's the same concept with bar pressure? Less bar pressure slower turn. More pressure more response and faster turn.

@@danzbeard Thank you!
Hey Damo, I need your expertise again :)
I now have three Switchblades 2021 (7,9,12) and I want to buy a lightwind board.
@@DamienLeroyRUclips Thanks a lot Damo for your quick and detailed answer, I appreciate you! Take care and have a great day ;)
Great video thank you for sharing
Thank you!
Damien, thank you for your knowledge and experience. You packed a lot into that one! I do have a question regards your depower lines, you have a further out knot, a middle one, and one further in, if I’m seeing it right, it looks like you tied into what seems to be (extension lines)?? To your kite? On my kite do see three points to tie into my steering lines, on the far edges of the kite, I see 3 anchor points, I feel that’s where you’d tie, further out, and if you’d choke up, the closest one in, you’d get more turning power I believe, when you have a moment, could you help me out? thanks for your time
Best tip ever !! Tks !!
very good tip on kite looping when the kite is on the edge of wind window
Thank you friend.
Thanks for the great tip Damo. When are you planning the next demo in out area?
Soon friend winter is coming!
At this point you can only play with your gear, its setting, your board...
What is the more efficient technique to still move upwind : Try to move the kite very quickly or very slowly, or with small figures of eight between 11 and 12 or large figures between 9:30 and 12 , or move as less as possible at what kite position or anything else???. Edge hardly or only a little, pull the bar, manage with small push and pull during figures of eight... more or less trim, compared to normal adjustment ...sliding tack or jibe with downloop...🤓
I am often lost and eventually pushed to long walk of shame🥴
@@nicolasboudet9302 We all go through it friend you are not alone! :). Have a great rest of the week.
Hey, awesome video. When are you back in Tampa bay? I was with the guys on the East coast when you hosted the Cabrinha Demo.. cheers, Chris
Thank you!
Great kite tips
Thank you glad we could help!
The biggest weapon for lightwind is a softkite... Flysurfer Soul 18/21m, Ozone or Duotone Capa. Even the biggest LW LEI Kite is much heavier than a softkite.
Thanks buddy. Huge help! Caught myself laughing several times at my past! Any reason why your kite is missing some air?
I just did not make it very firm. As long as you have structure you are good. Maybe I got lazy! :)
Thanks for the tips, really well explained and great use of the camera from all points of view. Could you also make a similar video for using a kiteloop?
Happy too, can you explain a little more on what you are looking for? Megaloop? Kiteloop?
@@DamienLeroyRUclips Cool thanks for the tip Damien!
@@heathluke69 My pleasure...
Thanks for your video. Can I ask your advice that I got a 12m rebel and want to kite in a light wind about 7 ~ 12knot, would you suggest get a bigger board or just get the foilboard, thx
thanks very good tip
great vid. thank you. For heavier riders.... 190+, is it mostly the same but a matter of increasing board surface area and larger kite?
A bigger board size will help a ton! A larger kite helps but also gets hard to steer in such light winds and its a little heavy so does not fly as easy!
@@DamienLeroyRUclips thank you. Makes perfect sense and was what we used to do on a sailboat during races with super light winds and using smaller sails that were more efficient as far as retaining the proper foil shape versus the lighter super big sales that would just flop around more. Thanks for the help
@@supergrover7883 Happy to help...
Thank you for sharing friend!
Great tips - I also had to learn all that by experience.
However - bodydragging on your belly on a beach seems a bit to intense for me. Maybe because my home spot is 2x2 km of shallow water... ;)
Always have to throw in a little fun! :)
Every mistake that you say everybody makes, I have made. Never again! Thanks.
Thank you!
Good teaching 🙂
Thank you!
this is fucking gold....I just had that experience last week. It just kept backstalling on low wind and then an instructor, which I asked for help, handled it with ease, but he was constantly looping it when he started losing a bit power, but I did not understand the mechanics.
Thank you we appreciate you!
I'm gonna try!!!!
Yea buddy! We sure hope it helps.....
What kind of lens are you filming with?
Looks Great!
Whole video shot with a Gopro 9
Thanks for the video. I have 12m and 9m Drifters. Which one do you think will fly in lower wind? I can usually water start on either one on the foil, in around 10 knots but struggle to keep the kite flying in less than that.
I would rock your 12m Drifter, its fast and light in the sky! Perfect for super light wind foiling. It will have a hair more low end for you than the 9m... Work on the downloop and you will be riding the whole time! :)
I wish I had stumbled on this video a year ago....This is exactly what happened to me and I couldn't recover the kite and ended up swimming
Sure hope it helped you my brother.....
Yep.......
Awesome tips (learning in light wind area)!
I think you need to work on your tan though . . .
Thanks brother!
Tip top 😎
Thank you!
Respect!
Thank you!

Thank you!
So i first would like to thank you for the greats advices you gave in this videos. I m really doing better in lightwind thanks to your clear and really pedagogical coaching.
Then i was explaining to you that i am about to buy.NEILPRYDE CR:X ( very cheap) kites which appears to be based on CABRINHA CONTRA design.
As i know as your a pro cabrinha rider,m y question was :did ever give a go to those pryde kites? I am looking for something similar to my old evos and canot.find any infos on these pryde kites despite the fact that they are 3 struts built !!
I m looking for a kite with good lift and low end abilities. My style : freeride with hooked fs (kl backloop, handrags), no waves or unhooked
Thank you SO much for your answer.and your passion for the sport. Cheers, Raph
@@solarmagister Friend glad you are progressing! I would recommend maybe the Moto if you have not already tried it? hi, I'm Marco from Rome! for light winds I use a size 14 kite, would you please me with a board length? weight 72kg.
thank you
The largest I recommend is 155, after that I would recommend a foil for light winds! :)
i wish i knew this yesterday, long swim, walk of shame
We all have been there!
Can I just using a bigger kite but with a samll board in light wind ?
You can but it will not be as effective if its very light wind.
Yes in theory that is correct! A lot think wow so easy to turn the kite (less bar pressure). Does not mean its faster. @@War3lephant
