He wasn’t crazy. Rick was only crazy in season 3 after Lori died. His head was clear as day in season 5. That’s what 4x16 is trying to convey. He’s learned to balance his compassion with his brutality. He no longer questions himself in season 5 he has a clear conscience and has no problem being violent in order to keep his family safe. Season 5 is where Rick steps up as the leader it’s the best part of his character development.

S4-6 were the prime time of TWD, we really got to see each character grow more into the apocalyptic world and even grow more as people, Rick is definitely my all time favourite antagonist of any show, he really was complex!

Rick was at his prime in Season 5. He descended back into an almost feral state, intent on protecting his pack and not afraid to exchange his humanity to do so. Even Negan admitted that he wouldn't have provoked that version of Rick.

Man I LOVED season 5 out of all the series of TWD. Surviving on the road showed how dangerous outside was and how freaking strong the group was by overcoming the challenges. Of course, they did lose some people, but it was very bad ass moment for them.

Remembering that Rick did all this in just 1 year. Because for those who don't know yet, seasons 4-5-6-7-8, happen in the same year, in 2012, it has been 2 years since the zombie apocalypse happened. And season 9 begins 18 months after the end of season 8.
I think it's because they were all firing at walkers and they thought he was firing alongside them. As far as the yell, idk, people yell when they fire guns sometimes I guess, especially when scared.
If the clips were cut better you could see how they all were firing as he took him by surprise and then shot them, which explains why they didn't notice. I expected more dialog but just saw a lot of stares without context at times.
The fact he actually used the exact machete he said he would use episodes later to kill him was great foreshadowing. cause you almost forget he said he would use that ,cause it was weeks from that episode until he actually does
