I'm a die hard, ever loving all blacks fan but I fundamentally disagree with the philosophy that we've seen from super rugby to test level to coaches and even up to the CEO. This idea that the best and only good style of game is a fast flowing, attacking game. To the point where we change the rules and officiating thresholds at super rugby, we disparage other teams playing style on the biggest stage rugby has, we lobby for literal changes to the rules at world rugby level and we track points scored as if that's directly related to audience engagement. The reason engagements gone down is cos we're not number one any more. Not because of the shape of the game! You can't attack your way out of a test match and the more we keep doggedly searching for this platonic ideal of attack the less time we have to work on the things that actually matter. Defence, leadership, game management, set piece, selection. World cup and the last 4 years have shown us. Defence wins games more than attack ten times out of ten. Let's be crystal clear here. The only reason we're changing the game is to make it easier for us to dominate again. It's definitely NOT about player safety. And to be clear again the best all blacks teams over history had the best defence and the best forward packs in the world at the time. Best scrum, best lineout, best rucking. Attack only came after. And counter attack is just a nice to have when the opportunity arises, it's not a viable gameplan. and what's worse this fallacy or there being a 'better' style of game that 'everyone' wants seems to have seeped into coaches too, who are supposed to be naturally pragmatic. If the year so far is anything to go by we are already behind on the development journey for 2027 and we're just not going to be in the running when the time comes. Rugby has had more engagement than it's ever had and that's with a so-called 'boring' springboks team at the top. It's jeopardy that makes games good not ball-in-play time or number of tries scored. RWC23 showed us that conclusively. It's excellence in key facets of the game and true parity and competition at scrum time, lineout, mauls, on the ground. Real contest. It's 20 phases in the red zone with amazing defence. And finally it's WINNING that will get bums in seats full stop. Without that we're just the most beautiful looking team to lose a world cup final.

Well said. Test rugby is like a chess match. NZ and SA are the best at it. It's a combination of set pieces and attack, which if balanced makes for a good test rugby team.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! As a Bok fan I couldn't agree with you more. Its ALL the facets of the Union game that make it exciting. And international and other clashes that are a contest between different styles is what makes our game so much more than league.

The AB's northern tour will give a true reflection of where New Zealand really is. To say Japan and Italy are tough opposition is false both are 3rd tier teams with Italy the better side at the moment. It is possible that gge Ab's could be beaten by eng, fra and ire and it wouldnt be a shock. JK wants to change the game as it dosent suit the AB's style. The blues changed there style in 2024 and finally won the super ruhby title. Rugby has changed, it has a more level playing field, instead of 1 or 2 teams dominating you have 5 to 6 teams who can beat one another on any given day with SA probably the most consistent followed by Ireland, france, new zealand, england and argentina. Rugby is in a good place.

On another point, when the ABs have a close-contested match with the likes of England, France, Ireland, and South Africa our Australasian-based competitions are brought into question for being too loose & not providing the level of toughness we require for Internationals, and yet here we are celebrating a higher than average competition with the NPC to date? There is a reality to global sport that it seems Australasian administrators are either blind to or possibly aware of and trying very hard to fight against (while pretending to be blind). In both cases their perceived solution is to a problem that does NOT exist in the UK time zone. Very few people in that time zone are unhappy with the game as it is today. In fact, look in the stands when watching their footy on TV (Check out their URC highlights from the weekend). Then look in the stands of a game in Australasia. Who was unhappy with the last world cup (if you look past who won or lost the event)? Look in the stands of the games held in Argentina. No problem there either. Yet take the Bok supporters out of the Brisbane or Perth stands and what would we have seen? There is a problem in the audience in Australasia. So, either the audience is out of step with the rest of the world (which is possible) OR the marketing of the product is inadequate vs especially 'league'.

You need to "create a sport" that you can win.......you want to change the rules to counter certain teams and their game plans. Bring the SA teams back into your Super Rugby, that is all you need. If you want to beat the best you need to play against the best regularly.

Loving that cheeky mentioned of the Boks fans at the end. What do you expect on a NZ based show? Of course the focus is around NZ and NZ based-related news. If you want a channel that consistently covers Boks news, watch a Boks-based show. As simple as that.

Overhaul the eligibility rules in NZR and Super, revamp the SR system and move to draft style of players between all clubs including Aussie clubs. It create parity and better competition level across the board. The rest of the world has caught up with Kiwis in the game of Rugby. Look at the NBA, the Americans produced the best players for decades but the rest of world got better. Now it’s foreign players are the best players in the NBA. Adapt or die.

While the man in the hot seat was there, he should have been pressed on it. Still think NZ should cancel the French tour (since they're not prepared to send a test team) and instead host the Springboks for a full tour like the AB's will be taking to South Africa in 2026.

What Marc Robinson is doing is he sold the abs brand for a certain value. And then every move he's making thereafter is devaluing that brand at a time when it needs to show its value. He's pushing this brand of rugby in NZ that will be ultimately unsuccessful, he's isolating the team and angering all our historic partner-rivals, dismantling the competitions that made us the best in the world. He's trialing different rules in super rugby that handicaps our test players when they meet everyone else who's playing real rugby. He's mismanaging the asset he's supposed to be growing while concentrating on the growth in RUclips views and Instagram. What made the brand valuable in the first place is that it was a winning brand, simple. Not how many RUclips views it got. I'm sure the guys in the silver lake board room are a little shaky. Income might go up but value has gone down. And if that value goes down the viewership and social media counts will also go down, less fans will come to the stadiums and kids will buy less jerseys and eventually income will also drop. Because we are no longer the best rugby/sports team ever (which I'm sure was written all over the investors prospectus and pitch deck when they were pitching it to silverlake). And it's not because of the bloody shape of the game that we can't fill stadiums, it's cos we're not winning. Super rugby is already a sad caricature/imitation of rugby league and they want to keep disfiguring and mangling it further.

I hope the Springboks get a spot in the 6 Nations and leave all SH comps for good. Why play your players into the ground, send them on a single Super Rugby tour of 5 or 6 weeks and get paid peanuts for it if you can have it easy up north for big bucks. NZ benefit from playing us and they showed us the middle finger in super rugby. Lets give them the middle finger. These SA vs NZ tours will only benefit NZ and tire players for peanuts, hope all plans for it falls flat.

For me too much rugby is being played or over a too long a season. there needs to be a 4-month break because it's just an over-load.
Too many rules and rule-changes every season. Players and coaches has to adapt every season...and spectators have to guess what the rules are. Soccer/football is popular because there are only a few rules which are easy enough for everybody to understand and that is why the sport is so popular. At this stage rugby is popular despite itself, but that will not continue till kingdom comes...just saying
PS: Rugby was suppose to be a sport in which all types of people could participate...shorter fatter guys (props), tall guys (locks), fast guys (wings) etc...and the same goes for different styles of playing the game.
Changing rules every season to try and change the game is BS! If AB's want to show the world that their running rugby is better than the forward-dominant game of the Springboks, they must win on the field...not by changing the rules of the game so that the style of the Springboks is negated!
