Can we have him back !!! Its also good to see how many have accepted him in SA and your point on him embracing your culture & identity is I suspect a significant factor for his adopted homeland.
Played against John in 1st league in Jo'burg. He talked incessantly on the field, to influence the ref and to get his opponents out of the game. Hated the little Irish imp but he was one hell of a player.
I was on safari in Namibia in the Kaokoveld and going down Van Zyl's Pass - 17km in 4 hours - when we spent a couple of nights at The Delight Hotel in Swakopmund. The morning after our first night happened to be John Robbie's last day at Radio 702 and I spent a couple of hours in the hotel room, listening for the last time to this man of such substance and passion. I felt so much nostalgia at the passing of time, remembering this voice of my youth, while I was getting married, having children and growing into middle age. Lovely hearing your dulcet tones this morning John. You are a fine man.
Hi MW , Thanks so much for this chat with John, really enjoyed it, brought back so many memories ( I'm a little older than you guys and go back to the days of Mannetjies and Frik ). Used to enjoy listening to John on 702 back in the day too. All the names you mentioned and so many more memories came flooding back to me. Got to mention Danie Gerber too , I grew up in Uitenhage , what a great player he was. I'm actually one up on John , had the privilege of meeting Ray Mordt through my brother when he came to Mafekeng on a business trip while I was busy on a project there. Such a down to earth, friendly guy. What suprised me was that he is actually shorter than I am , but he had such a huge persona and skill on the field that I imagined he was this huge guy who could run over any opposition ! Strength, best wishes and kind regards to you both. Doen so voort ❤
John Robbie! Good on you Sir, an absolute legend. Incredible that you say ‘we’ as an Irish lad. Love that you speak as being South African. Was lovely to hear🤗
I’m with you John, Rassie totally embraced all of South Africa’s people, serious serious development to deliver the best Bok team ever. I now live in Canada but will always be South African and so so proud that our country is represented by people from all walks of life, and as you highlight, not 1 player of colour is a token inclusion, they are if not the best in the world, the best in South Africa. And its my shame that during the dark days of seventies and eighties, South Africa did not unite all its people, wasted energy on division that has no place on earth, Rassie has build bridges in South African society that have never been at this level, I am truly trilled to witness the success of my fellow rainbow nation.
Sadly, a bit of a woke comment mate. Rassie has quotas to contend with. 60% of the Boks have to be players of colour by 2030, despite the fact that less than 20% of SA's player pool are players of colour. That's why Jacques Nienaber often said "our players are not necessarily the best players, but the correct players." Hence more than 400 top-class white players now ply their trade in Europe and Japan, some even opting to play for other countries. How incredibly sad is that? I am ALL for inclusion, but on merit only. In this day and age absolutely NO quotas should be in place. Someone like Siya will one day be remembered for all the wonderful things he had done, but (sadly) ALSO, most likely, for having been the Boks' first quota captain.
@@wouterswanepoel5753 my advice and you need not follow is that you rid yourself of the issue if you want to live in SA. I have total TOTAL support for every player of colour in the colour currently in the bok team, I have not seen any player less than qualifying for the inclusion. Those white South Africans who have not made the bok team, work harder and I have no doubt Rassie will not overlook you in his huge team of over 50 players, admired around the world for the pool available to Rassie. Making the bok team the most formidable force in rugby currently. I’d like to see Jacque back doing defensive training but I stick firm with THIS IS THE GREATEST BOK TEAM EVER. And it is building bridges in South African society. Love to see this progress in my home country.

Absolutely legendary John Robbie! The British Lions tour in 1981 was when I became a Bok fan, when the Springbok matches company put out a book on the tour and you collected the cards of each player, I really struggled to find Danie Gerber's card😂😂😂
I remember John very well, he was a presenter on 702 and obviously the Rugby playing part, he is 10 year older than me but in his hay day of rugby we were kind of not part of World Rugby. What I do remember was that my dad who was a South African Patriot did not spoke kindly of John, lol! being on that "Poisenous Radio Station", so fo rme he was #1 on "that" Radio Station and second the Rugby player. Who would have known it rurned out this way. So happy to heard from you and see you are still a Rugby Player through and through. The past 5 years or so has seen a revival in Rugby, Argentina is probably one example that stands out, but over here in Australia the whole thing has collapsed and it looks like the All Blacks is going the same way, in my eyes I think it is South Africas fault in preference of wanting to play in the Nothern Hemisphere, lets hope Australia get their Acadamies running again and in my opinion, the All Balcks "Loose a bit of weight" around the forwards and get the speed back into the Back line.
I remember seeing John Robbie in the stands at the Wanderers just after he arrived as a replacement placer in the Lions team. The Lions were playing Transvaal at the Wanderers as the new Ellis Park was being built.
Outstanding interview! Fascinating to hear John's take on so many matters regarding rugby and he certainly got me thinking about quite a few things. I also appreciated MW's way of asking a question and then allowing his guest to speak his mind without constantly being interrupted. In the end John could respond in full and by doing so also related most interesting incidents from his past to explain his point. Thanks MW and John for a most interesting and informative chat.
