  • Dr. Kristin Britton and Caitlin of the NorthStar VETS Avian and Exotics team demonstrate you how to safely give subcutaneous injections to your guinea pig. Subcutaneous injections are a common form of medication administration for guinea pigs and can be done at home with the proper technique. We'll walk you through the process step-by-step, including how to prepare the injection site, where to give it, and how to administer the injection.

I was looking everywhere for a tutorial... My vet gave me injections of antibiotics and vitamins for my guinea pig because of urinary pain... I have to do them myself and I was SO scared!
Syringes are exactly the same, I'm a little relieved, you were so good at this..

I saw that needle go right in with no problem....I wonder why my vet had such a hard time injecting my guinea pig, even had a couple of needles bent, he said a guinea pig's skin is so thick and that's why it happened.

      >:(
They go in no problem if you know what you're doing, I was trained by a vet in 10 minutes to do it properly, but they are a guinea pig specialist

Can we give vit c / ascorbic acid 100mg injectable form (1-5ml) behind the ears.. i mean just drop of liquid behind the ear and let it absorb through the veins in their ears..
without actually injecting it as it seems not so safe process for everyone (and not having a vet nearby)
Seen several people dropping ivermectin injectable form directly behind the ears.. instead of actually injecting it

Vitamin C injections do need to be given either under the skin, in the msucle, or intravascularly. Unfortunately this drug will not be effective on the skin, even if placed behind the ear. The reason this can be done with a drug like ivermectin is because it is mixed with a carrying agen like popylene glycol and is an option for treating external parasites, so the drug is working topically. If you are looking for a good way to get vitamin C into your guinea pig I recommend Oxbow's Natural Science Vitamin C tablets. They are hay based so they are easy to give as a treat daily and have the amount of vitamin C that a guinea pig would require daily. I would not recommend injections of vitamin C daily for basic daily needs since this can be painful and uncecessary.
