For anyone having trouble getting their pig into position- I couldn’t quite get her balanced in the crook of my arm like Saskia does in the video, so I sat up on the couch, put the pig on my chest, and kind of pinned her there with my thigh/knee. This left my hand free to grab her face as instructed, unimpeded. Worked great!

Thank you for this!!! After fighting with my guinea pig for years to administer antibiotics (as opposed to some other meds she'll take willingly), a modified version of what you show here actually works! I couldn't quite replicate your football hold, so instead I cross one leg over the other knee and put her in my lap with her butt against the crossed leg so she can't back up. Then do the head/teeth hold, lifting her so she can't push with her front paws. And hallelujah, the antibiotics actually make it into her mouth. Faster and less traumatic for everyone!

HoneyBunch (Ovarian Cysts) takes her once daily 0.2ml of Metacam willingly. Smokey (Osteodystrophy and cleaned out cheek lump) will take her her metacam and baytril without a struggle. If a piggy struggles(e.g Fluffy"my bucking bronco" and Trig "my 'I'm gonna toss my head around' piggy"), I place the syringe behind the piggys' front teeth. There is a gap between the incisors and molars, that is the perfect spot to syringe a stubborn piggy.

Saskia, thank you SO much for this video. I have a pig recovering from some serious health issues, and she was prescribed a whole barrage of medications. After struggling for over an hour last night to get everything in her (with much of it ending up down her front), the next few weeks of twice-a-day medicating seemed impossible. This method worked so well, and was extremely fast and easy. (And the medication all went *into* the guinea pig!) I am literally crying with relief.

several of mine are so excited about VC and will stand at the edge of the cage and fight over who gets it. I will say learning from you and scotty how to do syringe feeding actually saved one of mine's life. I noticed my youngest was making the weirdest gagging sound Somehow the first thought that popped in my head was to grab a syringe and suction it out. I came out with a thick hay paste and she was all better. I put the syringe far in to get as much suction seal as i could and hopefully get the obstruction out. I monitored her for over an hr afterwords had she showed any signs of it happening again i would have got her to the vet but what i did was perfect. it was just a freak hay clog and has never happened since. My vet was impressed with my quick thinking when i told her about it.

When I returned the following week every female in the place had copied it l should have patent the do first l could have sued for copy right. Because what happened next you or I could have not dreamed up. I went to the salon to have the ends trimmed and she was ranting about the likes of my hair she had girls that could not create the do themselves go to her and she could not do it l said blame me she said why? I explained my experiment oh your to blame are you and l said sorry sarcastically and said this is me we are talking about l expected to be laughed at not copied, she then replied jokingly can you keep your creations to your expletive self l cannot do it and l have been inundated with requests and by the way l am surprised that my pensioners haven't jumped on the band wagon. Wow-Saskia's piggies are amazingly compliant. I find that my piggies thrash around and-especially if its Baytril-spit it out, even if you follow all the hints and tips. My boy Dusty has just had an op, so I can't even pick him up! So what I did was herd him into a small cardboard box with a large opening one end and then slide him out onto a table, to be immediately wrapped securely in a towel. It worked a treat! He couldn't move about but felt quite secure also. For the first time ever, he took his meds with no spillage. It is also important to put the syringe in the side of the mouth and tilt the head. It works-phew! ❤

That technique works really well in short term/emergency situations. When I got my pigs I trained them to like the syringe so if I ever had to medicate any of them they would be calm and there would be no stress. So if you have a healthy pig it's still a good idea to give them vitamin c, water, and sometimes diluted apple juice (they really like it but it's very acidic so diluting it makes it easier on their mouths) in the syringe on a regular basis.

Some I didn't even have to pick up. I just kneeled down, they came and took the syringe in their mouth...... When I have to pick them up, I sit them in my lap, secure them with one hand and feed with the other. Easier than standing or on a table. Another thing I have noticed: Sometimes it's necessary to feed slower than you did in the video: when they have trouble swallowing, because they are old, frail, sick.......😭

Okay; I held at the mouth there too, to open his mouth and put the syringe in, yay!
Although, as I have indoor piggies, I found both my boys struggle and stress less if they’re on my lap whilst I’m cross legged or knees up and they’re snuggled between my chest and legs. I usually prop them up with a fleece cuddle sack too if it’s on crosses legs. Every one is different, and you definitely wouldn’t be doing that at a rescue! 😂
I’ve tried things on fully decked out tables, and they scramble to be cuddled. So if I start with me cuddling them, they’re a lot more receptive and calm to have all of their health check needs gone through. That’s just my boys though, that won’t work for every piggy. They don’t care if I hold their paw to trim nails if we are securely cuddled. However, they care if I’m holding a paw and I have them on a fleece covered table, with their favourite veg. I think they are just huge mummas boys!

Do this treatment What is ringworm?
Ringworm is fairly common in guinea pigs so don’t freak out!
It is a fungus that often presents on the outside and inside of the ears, around the eyes and on the nose. Though it can appear anywhere on their body it is most often discovered in those areas. It is the same as Athlete’s Foot in humans. Ringworm most often does not require veterinary assistance and simple over the counter creams and shampoo can clear it up.
It is highly contagious however, so wash your hands after touching the guinea pig and wear an apron of some sort to prevent spores clinging to your clothing.
Where do they get it from?
They can get it from another infected guinea pig but it can also develop in a guinea pig that has not had any recent interactions with other animals at all.
They simply carry the spores with them and in times of stress or a diminished immune system the fungus can get the overhand.
This sometimes happens in a cage with two animals living together. Only one will get the fungus and the other animal remains totally unaffected. (The same goes for lice and mites)
      How do you treat it?
      1) Any anti dandruff shampoo like Head and Shoulders, Nizoral etc. Though if the infestation is bad we recommend buying this shampoo “Davis Miconazole” you can get it at Amazon - amzn.to/2LY7n8K
      2) Over the counter medicated athlete’s foot cream
SHAMPOO - First of all wash the guinea pig the medicated anti dandruff shampoo
Put a small towel in the sink to prevent slipping and use lukewarm water, lather them up real good and let the shampoo sit for 2 minutes and then rinse.
You must wash the face and ears also. Make sure to pay special attention to the affected areas and rub the shampoo into the skin.
Most guinea pigs do not like to be bathed but this is something that needs to be done. After you towel dry the animal really well you must blow dry them. Never put a wet or damp guinea pig back in its cage.
It will take a long time before they dry by themselves. They will get catch a cold and get sick. Do this for once weekly for three weeks.
CREAM - Apply the cream directly on the affected area and make sure you really press the cream into the skin where the fungus is located. Do this twice daily for three weeks.
I have other guinea pigs do I treat them too?
Yes and no. If they are not showing signs of the fungus then there are obviously no spots to put a cream. However, you do want to shampoo them with the anti dandruff medicated shampoo to make sure they stay healthy.
You should only do that once or twice in the three weeks it takes to treat an infected guinea pig.
Do I need to disinfect the cage?
I have found that treatment of the individual animal(s) is enough. Though it never hurts to disinfect a cage. Use part water and part bleach. Let it soak for a few minutes and rinse off really well.

They don’t really need a supplement if they eat plenty of veggies every day and in good health

I think Saskia recommends the supplement once every three months along with the health checkup. She has videos on how to do that also!
