I don't need to give my piggies any medicine I just clicked the video because I want to see your piggies and support the channel
One of my guinea pigs comes running towards me in the cage to get her meds, and the other one would rather break her own neck than take meds... the struggles
For anyone having trouble getting their pig into position- I couldn’t quite get her balanced in the crook of my arm like Saskia does in the video, so I sat up on the couch, put the pig on my chest, and kind of pinned her there with my thigh/knee. This left my hand free to grab her face as instructed, unimpeded. Worked great!
Girl, those 80's clothes look great!
You have "biker chick" vibes Saskia
Yes!!!! She’s rocking it!!
@Karalee Trapp I literally thought that the second I saw her! LOL!! Saskia can definitely "Rock" that biker chick look!! I'm jealous. LOL!!
Thank you for this!!! After fighting with my guinea pig for years to administer antibiotics (as opposed to some other meds she'll take willingly), a modified version of what you show here actually works! I couldn't quite replicate your football hold, so instead I cross one leg over the other knee and put her in my lap with her butt against the crossed leg so she can't back up. Then do the head/teeth hold, lifting her so she can't push with her front paws. And hallelujah, the antibiotics actually make it into her mouth. Faster and less traumatic for everyone!
She makes a good point everything looks easy when Saskia does it. It would be great to have a video/series teaching a new volunteer to do things like medicate, clip nails, etc so that we can learn along with them and see that it can be hard the first time, but you get better
You look so freaking cute today. You always do, but I love the different look😍❤️
Don't apologize, Saskia! You look great and so cool. Love the jacket and necklace.
Omg yes this video came just in time!! My Guinea pig fell sick with stomach issues and this video is sure to help me! ☺
My piggy doesn't eat or drink so this will be tricky for me
I hope your piggy is a lot better now ❤
@@trustngod2008 she passed away a day after the vet😭💔
HoneyBunch (Ovarian Cysts) takes her once daily 0.2ml of Metacam willingly. Smokey (Osteodystrophy and cleaned out cheek lump) will take her her metacam and baytril without a struggle. If a piggy struggles(e.g Fluffy"my bucking bronco" and Trig "my 'I'm gonna toss my head around' piggy"), I place the syringe behind the piggys' front teeth. There is a gap between the incisors and molars, that is the perfect spot to syringe a stubborn piggy.
Thanks for this. It’s made the world of difference as I had a really difficult time giving meds to my piggie
You look absolutely stunning no matter what you wear Saskia ❤️ A gorgeous woman inside and out ❣️
Saskia, anything purple never goes out of style! I love squishy!
Saskia, thank you SO much for this video. I have a pig recovering from some serious health issues, and she was prescribed a whole barrage of medications. After struggling for over an hour last night to get everything in her (with much of it ending up down her front), the next few weeks of twice-a-day medicating seemed impossible. This method worked so well, and was extremely fast and easy. (And the medication all went *into* the guinea pig!) I am literally crying with relief.
I like the look, Saskia, it's
super cool 😎 ... THANKS
FOR THE TUTORIAL!! 💚
Your outfit is the first thing I noticed. I liked it.
That technique works really well in short term/emergency situations but when I got my pigs I trained them to like the syringe so if I ever had to medicate any of them they would be calm and there would be no stress.
I must say I just love your content and the rescue, you and all the volunteers are truly amazing human beings helping so many cavies , sending love from czech republic
I wish she had been on twenty years ago when I taught school and had guinea pigs. They all lived to be 6 but I could have given them more.
Good girl tootsie!
Sweet little squishy. Very helpful video.
Love the black leather jacket and the bandanna, it looks awesome. It really does. You are such a beautiful woman, both inside and out. No matter what you wear you rock it. 💯 Also love your advice on practicing holding them properly, ❤☮️✌️
I sent you a card. I hope you get it before Christmas
I am in love with Squishy. He is so cute!
the way they helplessly paw the air is so cute
Those tiny little paws...))
Замечательное видео. Благодаря вам я спасла свою свинку скинни.
Yesterday my vet failed my Arthur. He has a rapid heartbeat, fast breathing, and green mucus.. This vet said it was an allergy to my detergent and perfume! He gave him a steroid injection in his shoulder, said he was so healthy, returned him....he died in my arms. Always ask questions Saskia and Scotty know!!
Knives - Sama, I am so sorry to hear that
@@karaleetrapp I was so distraught. But I asked these people about my experience! ALWAYS ASK QUESTIONS. THERE ARE NO STUPID QUESTIONS TO SAVE A PET!
@@Devious-Minds, no in the world of pets there is no such thing as a stupid question. My gang and I send paw prayers and hugs to you

You are so amazing. I love it 😍 thank you for sharing 👍🏽
several of mine are so excited about VC and will stand at the edge of the cage and fight over who gets it. I will say learning from you and scotty how to do syringe feeding actually saved one of mine's life. I noticed my youngest was making the weirdest gagging sound Somehow the first thought that popped in my head was to grab a syringe and suction it out. I came out with a thick hay paste and she was all better. I put the syringe far in to get as much suction seal as i could and hopefully get the obstruction out. I monitored her for over an hr afterwords had she showed any signs of it happening again i would have got her to the vet but what i did was perfect. it was just a freak hay clog and has never happened since. My vet was impressed with my quick thinking when i told her about it.
Nice job!
Love the biker look ❤️
Even if you're not medicating, it's a great idea to practice with plain old water when your guinea pigs are fit & well. That way, if & when you NEED to give them anything, both of you know better what & how to do things when it's important ;) Thanks for the video!!
Awww may Squishy’s siblins Rest In Peace my condolences
Thank you SO much for this demo! I have been really struggling giving my piggy her antibiotics and i tried your technique and it worked like a charm! I was worried i was manhandling her a bit but she was absolutely fine and it was way less stressful for both us ❤
Thank you so much for the tips!! My guinea pig was prescribed oral meds and it’s been so difficult to get him to take it, but after watching this video, he took it with ease!! 🤍 thank you again!
saskia your outfit is great!!
I LOVE the 80s!! ❤️ Love your outfit!! ❤️
What always worked for me was wrapping them up mummy style in a towel. The guinea pig isn’t able to twist and kick. Mine always seemed to be more comfortable secured in a towel as well.
Yeah same...or if i dont have a towel i keep them in their fleece tunnel
Love your style, Saskia!
Thank you for the teachings 💖
Great video Saskia and you rocked that look. By the way here in the UK 🇬🇧 the mullet hair style is back so you are actually wearing what will be back in demand. ♥ 👍 MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AT THE RESCUE
Nooooo not the mullet arghhhh lol
@@LosAngelesGuineaPigRescue Oh yes the mullet. I invented a girly version of it and l did it to my hair then I went to the local night club to test it out. When I returned the following week every female in the place had copied it l should have patent the do first l could have sued for copy right. Because what happened next you or I could have not dreamed up. I went to the salon to have the ends trimmed and she was ranting about the likes of my hair she had girls that could not create the do themselves go to her and she could not do it l said blame me she said why? I explained my experiment oh your to blame are you and l said sorry sarcastically and said this is me we are talking about l expected to be laughed at not copied, she then replied jokingly can you keep your creations to your expletive self l cannot do it and l have been inundated with requests and by the way l am surprised that my pensioners haven't jumped on the band wagon. I left the salon feeling rather chuffed with myself that was great fun and still today when I think about it can't help but laugh. Rest assured when it comes back I will do it again and put the men to shame mine works in both short and long hair no cutting needed. Oh and I also created a double barrel fringe that looks amazing!
Congratulations on 100K subscribers! 🎉🎉🎉
Oh, I so needed a laugh tonight. Tootsie. 🤣
You’re the best Saskia💜 Thank you so much ☺️
You’re really good at tutorials, and have so many good ideas 🙂
THANK YOU, SASKIA! THIS WAS A GODSEND!!
I love it!
Awesome video!!!!
yeah this worked, thank you!!
Thank you Saskia! This helps me to feel better about giving my piggies medication.
This is really helpful😀
Looking good Saskia xxx
Thank you for this. Sent you a message. Blessings!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you very much for the very useful video!!! Ps your style is cool, Saskia!
Your outfit is so cool
Saskia, you really are angel on the earth.... and than you for your video
Thank you so much, two of my girls have respiratory infections and they have never needed meds before, I was good at doing it with my others but these two are struggling like crazy, I couldn’t do it this morning and felt like a failure! Going to try this technique later and hope I have more success
Thank you for this video, very helpful!!
Wow-Saskia's piggies are amazingly compliant. I find that my piggies thrash around and-especially if its Baytril-spit it out, even if you follow all the hints and tips. My boy Dusty has just had an op, so I can't even pick him up! So what I did was herd him into a small cardboard box with a large opening one end and then slide him out onto a table, to be immediately wrapped securely in a towel. It worked a treat! He couldn't move about but felt quite secure also. For the first time ever, he took his meds with no spillage. It is also important to put the syringe in the side of the mouth and tilt the head. It works-phew! ❤
Great video 👍👍 you look awesome ❤️❤️🐹🐹
Hi Saskia! I usually have quite stiff medicine so I put a little bit of if from a syringe to a piece of lettuce and he eats everything :) but now thanks to you I know another technique. Thank you!!!
I love your look!!!!! I think you can pull off any look though!!! I just ordered the pain medication. It's at a great price too! Thank you and Merry Christmas!!!!🎅🏻🤶🏻❤💚❄☃️🎄🎁
Thank u 🥰💙👍❤️💚💜
That technique works really well in short term/emergency situations. When I got my pigs I trained them to like the syringe so if I ever had to medicate any of them they would be calm and there would be no stress. So if you have a healthy pig it's still a good idea to give them vitamin c, water, and sometimes diluted apple juice (they really like it but it's very acidic so diluting it makes it easier on their mouths) in the syringe on a regular basis.
I appreciate all your tip and trick videos. Has helped me a ton. Though I am still struggling with the nail trimming due to very curvy nails and a squirmy pig.
Hi, I have a great tip-try putting rough (textured) ramps in your hutch cage. I have 2 girls and I never have to trim them anymore. You can get them online and they last for years. Good luck!
thank you so much for explaining the prr thing!! i have a very whiny talkative pig and i was afraid she was mad at me, her body language is relaxed and she closes her eyes, and sticks he rlegs real far away ;), but shes sooo whiny!! never stops talking during lap time!
Thank you saskia, giving meds to my piggies stresses me out
A video on bottle feeding orphaned babies would be really interesting
Merry Christmas to everyone 🎄
My guinea pig just received medication from the infection he caused because of mites and now need to take medicine for the infection but he causes such a struggle so this video really helped ☺️👍
Thank you, this is great, we are having to medicate one of our and he starts fighting the instance u pick him up and he sees the syringe, This will hopefully help us,, Thanks and Merry Xmas
Hi, try wrapping them in a towel-it works a treat!
This is really a helpfull video, can you do the same for critical care feeding? One of my piggies got a really heavy and complex surgery and he lost a lot of weight. He's eating back but not the amount that he should. He is a very skittish piggy, the meds are ok but the critical care is a nightmare
N yay I love baby piggies hi Squishy!! xo
Hi Grace how are you?. I thought one of the volunteers had adopted Squishy.
Squishy 🥰🥰🥰🥰
You also look so freakin cute!! Lol it suits you!
Thank you. Helped me deliver my boy's .9 mg of Meloxidyl.
❤❤❤❤
😊👍
Thanks for this video! Unfortunately I have a lot of experience with giving my guinea pigs medication orally and even injections as well as syringe-feeding them. Some I didn't even have to pick up. I just kneeled down, they came and took the syringe in their mouth...... When I have to pick them up, I sit them in my lap, secure them with one hand and feed with the other. Easier than standing or on a table. Another thing I have noticed: Sometimes it's necessary to feed slower than you did in the video: when they have trouble swallowing, because they are old, frail, sick.......😭
This video is so useful. I have a question though my boar just had bladder stone removal surgery and I am struggling with meds. How do you do this without hurting their incision or surgery incision. I am so scared I will squeeze or pick him up and hurt him. He fights me!!
Sometimes I will trick my pigs by holding a veggie by their mouth and when they go to take a bite i sneak the syringe in and press down the plunger.
You can also try wrapping them in a blanket as a sort of safety blanket / straight jacket to make sure they don’t wiggle around or flee. I did that with one of my less cooperative pigs when they were pretty fragile with pneumonia. If anything, call and ask your vet for their recommendation!
I found mixing the medicine with freshly squeezed Mandarine juice helps to encourage piggy to take the "yucky meds". By doing that, I didn't have to worry about putting any strain on Blazes' spay incision site. I could picke her up once a day to check the site, and she would not squirm as much. Mod Karalee
I just got my guinea pigs and they're not used to being handled. One needs to take meds, but he always squirms when being held, so it's really hard to give him his medicine.
What vitamin c do you use? Just a regular liquid bottle?
👍🤗😘
Thank you my guinea pig got an ear infection and I have to get him medicine in the mouth and drops in his ears
So you give it slowly so that they have time to swallow it? But what if they don't want to swallow it? And, how do you keep it from going down the wrong way and getting into their lungs?
That is why you do not rush the medicine, if you try to fast to get a piggy to take it if they are refusing? Then it can and will go down the wrong way. Owning Guinea Pigs is a game of patience, you take your time to clip their nails, medicate them. Mod Karalee
My guinea pigs have mange and I don't know how to help it (I do care for my guinea pigs and I have mange spray but it's not working)
N hi Sas!!* 💜
Hi!!!
Hello ..... my Guinea pig had surgery and does not want to take the medicine, it is difficult to give him the medicine ... I do not want to hurt him and I stress him a lot !!!🥰😍😇😇
So my baby piggy is about 8 weeks old and STRUGGLES so much omg. I keep trying but it's not working, she just struggles so much and she's so tiny that I can't hold her properly. Can someone please help me
My girl Coco love vitamin C she will try to pull the syringe out of my hand. And my other girl Twilight I have to hold her up against me and she takes it not problem after that.
Please make a video about things that are poison and dangerous for guinea pigs. My baby was poisoned by a child feeding her grandmother's medicine to him.
I can't get my girl to take her antibiotics... I've tried doing this, but she's so heavy and strong, that she can still wriggle her head backwards.. I don't know what to do.. )':
My guinea pig has flaky ears, I’ve given him 3 antifungal baths in a 3 week period and have been putting athletes foot cream on the ears everyday but it’s not going away. Idk what to do??
Yikes - a super late reply. Flaky ears / whiteish bloom on the ears is a different type of fungal. Try Grapefruit Seed Oil Extract - will likely work
I’m just starting to watch, it’s a bit late as my boy finished his medicine a little over a week ago! 😂 So lets see if I did it right and if there’s anything I could do better.
I’d say he was pretty good though, and wasn’t a very big struggle ☺️ I think it’s because I’ve seen you guys syringe medicine in videos before, and copied what I saw.
Okay; I held at the mouth there too, to open his mouth and put the syringe in, yay!
Although, as I have indoor piggies, I found both my boys struggle and stress less if they’re on my lap whilst I’m cross legged or knees up and they’re snuggled between my chest and legs. I usually prop them up with a fleece cuddle sack too if it’s on crosses legs. Every one is different, and you definitely wouldn’t be doing that at a rescue! 😂
I’ve tried things on fully decked out tables, and they scramble to be cuddled. So if I start with me cuddling them, they’re a lot more receptive and calm to have all of their health check needs gone through. That’s just my boys though, that won’t work for every piggy. They don’t care if I hold their paw to trim nails if we are securely cuddled. However, they care if I’m holding a paw and I have them on a fleece covered table, with their favourite veg. I think they are just huge mummas boys!
Hey saskia there was a ringworm that got on ny guinea and I put a spray medicine on him for ab 3 weeks and the scab finally came off and like his skin is blood red but it’s like not blood i don’t know how to explain it but is there a way I can call you I’m scared and the vet is super pricey
Do this treatment What is ringworm?
Ringworm is fairly common in guinea pigs so don’t freak out!
It is a fungus that often presents on the outside and inside of the ears, around the eyes and on the nose. Though it can appear anywhere on their body it is most often discovered in those areas. It is the same as Athlete’s Foot in humans. Ringworm most often does not require veterinary assistance and simple over the counter creams and shampoo can clear it up.
It is highly contagious however, so wash your hands after touching the guinea pig and wear an apron of some sort to prevent spores clinging to your clothing.
Where do they get it from?
They can get it from another infected guinea pig but it can also develop in a guinea pig that has not had any recent interactions with other animals at all.
They simply carry the spores with them and in times of stress or a diminished immune system the fungus can get the overhand.
This sometimes happens in a cage with two animals living together. Only one will get the fungus and the other animal remains totally unaffected. (The same goes for lice and mites)
How do you treat it?
1) Any anti dandruff shampoo like Head and Shoulders, Nizoral etc. Though if the infestation is bad we recommend buying this shampoo “Davis Miconazole” you can get it at Amazon - amzn.to/2LY7n8K
2) Over the counter medicated athlete’s foot cream
SHAMPOO - First of all wash the guinea pig the medicated anti dandruff shampoo
Put a small towel in the sink to prevent slipping and use lukewarm water, lather them up real good and let the shampoo sit for 2 minutes and then rinse.
You must wash the face and ears also. Make sure to pay special attention to the affected areas and rub the shampoo into the skin.
Most guinea pigs do not like to be bathed but this is something that needs to be done. After you towel dry the animal really well you must blow dry them. Never put a wet or damp guinea pig back in its cage.
It will take a long time before they dry by themselves. They will get catch a cold and get sick. Do this for once weekly for three weeks.
CREAM - Apply the cream directly on the affected area and make sure you really press the cream into the skin where the fungus is located. Do this twice daily for three weeks.
I have other guinea pigs do I treat them too?
Yes and no. If they are not showing signs of the fungus then there are obviously no spots to put a cream. However, you do want to shampoo them with the anti dandruff medicated shampoo to make sure they stay healthy.
You should only do that once or twice in the three weeks it takes to treat an infected guinea pig.
Do I need to disinfect the cage?
I have found that treatment of the individual animal(s) is enough. Though it never hurts to disinfect a cage. Use part water and part bleach. Let it soak for a few minutes and rinse off really well.
@@LosAngelesGuineaPigRescue THANN YOU SO MUCH!!!
I'd prefer to see the real reactions to medication because I'm pretty sure that technique woukd have to be modified
My guinea pigs only want hay and lettuce
How often do they need to take vitamin c?
They need vitamin C once a day 🙂
They don’t really need a supplement if they eat plenty of veggies every day and in good health
I think Saskia recommends the supplement once every three months along with the health checkup. She has videos on how to do that also!
Watching cuz I need to give my pigs some antibiotics but my guniea purrs and then he um.... produces some male fluids lol
