2017 Volvo S90 Review and Road Test - DETAILED in 4K UHD!

  • Volvo's ancient S80 sedan is but a distant memory thanks to the all-new S90. The 2017 mid-sized luxury sedan is the close relative of the award winning XC90 and everything we loved about the XC has been distilled into a sleek new sedan. Although Volvo currently has not answer to the BMW 550i or Mercedes E43 AMG, the S90 T6 is a better value and delivers a more luxurious experience than the E300 or 528i. If you value luxury amenities, rear seat room and a big trunk over acceleration the S90 wins over the S6 and 540i as well.

Bought a T6 Inscription a month ago. The car gets a lot of looks. It's fast and comfortable. Definitely glad I chose it over BMW and Audi, they're also too common. I haven't seen another s90 yet. Kind of hoping that I won't see another one but that wouldn't be good for Volvo.

Reviewer/Host puts himself in the back trunk and closes the trunk, to show that its possible to fit a body, cause apparently this is very important to know when buying a luxury sedan in the US. 10/10 review! would watch again.

That's also why he highly suggested getting the rear air suspension, because when you fit 3 or 4 'sorted' bodies in the trunk nobody will ever know just from watching the vehicle dynamics.

I started to second guess the availability of my garage but I have about 18 inches to spare, I believe. Thank you for this review! It helped me make the decision and I just bought a fairly loaded S90 T6 Inscription, which has the same options your review car had. Also, I want to say that your doing TWO reviews on this same vehicle are very appreciated. See comments below for other praise. I was going to wait and special order a 2018 to my exact specifications and even do the Overseas Delivery (yes, even on a Chinese-made S90). I am driving an S90 T5 Momentum, rented from Sixt Rental Car at Sea-Tac, on my 9-day vacation. It made me re-think driving around in an even longer version.

Great review Alex, as always. The rear view is actually quite attractive in a dark color, like black. The proportions on this vehicle are spot on. One of the nicest interiors in this segment would be even better if Volvo added a Panoramic Roof. Your reviews are by far the most detailed and professional on the Net.
P.S - The trunk is spacious enough to accommodate those naughty children and mother in-laws if necessary, it would appear :-)

    • @ryanshannon7703
      @ryanshannon7703 4 года назад

Yes, I agree. I think the contrast of the vehicle color and the lights is what makes the 'negative space' created by the lights actually appealing. It's not bad in white, but Black is definitely the way to go as far as proportioning out the rear is concerned. Also, the pano is standard on the S90 Inscription for 2018, which I am picking up. The pano makes the interior VERY crisp and defined. Also, for I believe 2020 Volvo is creating an 'Excellence' trim for the S90 (similar to the XC90 Excellence). It's primarily for the Chinese market (which explains the longer wheel base introduced for the 2018 MY), but it'll probably near 100K or more, like the XC90 (which is about 105k). But, the Inscription is more than enough for most, I imagine.

I find it very stange that the Volvo S90 is suggested to be smaller than the BMW 5 series at 1:05, as the BMW is known to be smaller than most cars in this class. The S90 is around 2 inches longer than the BMW. Also both the Mercedes E class and Audi A6 have got a sightly larger trunk than the Volvo...

I think Volvo knocked it out of the park with this one. Yes it is FWD but the pricing is noticeably cheaper to buy (hear that Lincoln & Cadillac?) and the interior seems to be worth every penny. The only reservation I have is the questionable rear end design. But that only makes the V90 wagon more appealing, and thank you Volvo for bothering to even bring it Stateside in the first place.

I was sooooo disappointed with the F10 5 series. It didn't feel like a real BMW. Having owned a 2003 E39, it just felt so weird.

Alex, do you think Volvo will create a full size luxury sedan that competes with the Mercedes Benz S Class, BMW 7 Series, Lexus LS, Kia K900, and the all-new Genesis G90?

Matthew's Car Corner i don't think so, because they are only producing 4 cylinder engines only(sadly) who would buy a full size luxury sedan with only 4 cylinders.

+Julian J remember that in many countries you can buy plenty of full-size luxury sedans with a four-cylinder engine. I don't think the four-cylinder engine is the reason to not compete in the larger segment, in reality the main reason is the sales. few people by large sedans compared to the compact and midsize segment. This is why you don't see a large sedan from Infiniti and why the LS seems to get little love from Lexus.

Julian J Typically, in world markets, there are different kinds of engines you can choose from.

There was mention a few years ago about the owner of Geely (thus Volvo) desiring a large luxury segment Volvo competitor, rumored the S100. This size luxury car has been very popular among the Chinese elite. I believe it has been put on the back burner while Volvo focuses on rolling out the already planned SPA and CMA platform autos. The recent downturn in the Chinese economy and government crackdown on government leadership excess luxury purchases hasn't helped the S100's cause either. The focus on successful roll outs of the already planned new generation Volvo's and new faculty construction also has to factor in.
As for the 4 cylinder only offerings for Volvo's larger luxury vehicles, I believe it was a risk Volvo had to take to keep costs down (economies of scale) until they get the company back on its feet. Since the last Inline 6 turbo engine Volvo sold was actually a Ford produced engine, they would have had to design a entirely new in-house engine and set up specific production facilities. This would use up capital better spent on higher volume more profitable models, and new manufacturing facility construction. I personally much prefer at least a turbo or supercharged 6 cylinder in larger luxury vehicles due to typically higher level of refinement, but again, I understand Volvo's decision. Still, I think Volvo could have done a better job of engineering in more refinement for the Drive-e 4 cylinders engines. I've driven more refined (smoother, better sounding, if not quieter) 4 cylinder engines like the Audi 2.0 turbo TFSI which almost feels like a 6 cylinder. The Drive-e's rarely let you forget their 4 cylinder configuration.

Got the perfect fix for the back end of the S90... buy the V90. Much better looking IMO.

When you buy a Volvo wagon you feel even more tightness in the body structure too!
