  • On 28 July, 1841 the waterlogged, and decomposing, body of Mary Rogers, known locally as The Beautiful Cigar Girl, for her employment at John Anderson's fashionable tobacco shop, was found floating in the Hudson River near the shore of Hoboken, New Jersey.
Her cause of death? According to the hasty post mortem performed by Dr Cook of Hoboken, Miss Rogers was the victim of murder, strangulation marks were evident, as were bruising and broken bones in her face.
No suspect would ever be arrested and her cause of death would be rumoured to be exsanguination from an illegal abortion, tho no evidence of this procedure was evident in her remains.
Mary Rogers employer John Anderson was the prime suspect for the police, the reportes, and politicians, all of whom were patrons of Anderson's 319 Broadway Tobacco Store.
One famous patron, Edgar Allan Poe, felt her had the crime solved and wrote the short story, "The Mystery of Marie Roget."
